Chapter 38
Presley
Alex walked over to the barn early the next morning.
She had on a pair of overalls and boots, which made my heart rap against my breast.
“I’ve made a decision.”
She’d already told me. Mexico. I was willing to accept it now, unlike yesterday, when I needed an entire day and night to process another person leaving me.
“I’m willing to visit you in Mexico, I’ve decided.” I rushed ahead, before she could say what she came here to.
With a small laugh, Alex stepped closer.
“I want to convert the manor into a sanctuary. El Peligro has always been able to cut through red tape. I want this place to be a refuge for families who are running from the men like Markos. I want this to be a place where kids can learn to ride horses and play with goats. I want there to be gardens and pumpkins.”
My expression must have matched my confusion because she stepped closer and shook my shoulders.
“This means I’m staying here. Mom and Dad are going to help me with the renovations. They’ll be around a lot, too, but I’m not leaving. I’m staying.”
Tears welled in my eyes, burning my nose. I wanted to play it cool, but I was too far gone. My arms went around her tall shoulders, and I sobbed happily into her shirt.
“I’m so happy you’re staying. You have no idea how hard it was to wrap my head around the idea of you leaving.”
She hugged me back until we broke apart and laughed. “I’ve always wanted a sister, Presley James. You’re not getting rid of me that easy. Now, let’s go check on our goat baby.”
“We’re going to have to read up on how to deliver her babies. The vet said she’s having twins.”
Alex laughed. “Of course she is.”
The stars were bright and beautiful as the three of us snuggled on a large couch and watched the meteor shower.
“This is better than the loungers that were up here,” I mused, feeling the warmth from Kingston at my side. Reaper lay on my other side, nestling in so I was completely warm and safe.
His breath fanned my hair as he laughed. “The couch was your idea.”
I smiled as the warm air seemed to squeeze us. “I know.”
Gio looked through his telescope and let out a sound of excitement. “Come here, Elvis.”
Kingston opened his arms, so I could escape. I walked over and had Gio’s arms around me a second later as he helped me adjust the telescope.
“What do you see?” His warm lips grazed my ear.
Tilting the scope, I squinted. The shape was somewhat difficult to make out at first, but after a few seconds, I saw it. The twins.
“You found Castor and Pollux.”
“Feels sorta like fate, Elvis.” Gio kissed my cheek.
It did feel like destiny like I was exactly where I was supposed to be, and from here, things would only get better.
