Chapter 16 Death and Rebirth
I realized in a flash—this was a trap.
He wanted us all in one place so he could take us out together.
Terror shot through me. I jumped off the motorcycle and threw myself in front of Fu Zeyan, Shen Xingye, and Qi Qian.
"Pei Muchen—what the hell do you think you're doing?!"
He fired a burst right at my feet.
"Su Wan, what do you think?"
"I told you—you have no other Husbands. You only have me."
"Today was our wedding. I sent out the invitations. And you ran off with them."
"You know how much that hurt me?"
His voice cracked.
He actually started crying.
Red-rimmed eyes, beautiful gloomy face twisted with love and desperate hate.
"It's okay," he muttered to himself.
"Once I kill them all, you'll finally see only me."
Shen Xingye cursed. "Fu Zeyan—this kid's playing dirty. He wants to wipe us all out!"
Fu Zeyan stayed calm. "Get in my car. The glass is bulletproof."
Really?
I never knew his patriotic red-flag sedan had bulletproof windows.
Shen Xingye and Qi Qian shielded me as we dove inside.
Fu Zeyan floored it.
Above us, Pei Muchen raged and unloaded on the roof.
Shen Xingye yelled, "He's insane! He knows Sister's in here and he's still shooting!"
Qi Qian pulled me close, voice aching. "He doesn't love Wanwan at all. If he did, he could never hurt her—or the people she cares about."
Fu Zeyan snorted. "First person to act this wild on Fu family territory."
"But the real show starts now."
"Three... two... one..."
The gunfire stopped.
I popped the sunroof and looked up.
Sister had just plunged a syringe into Pei Muchen's neck.
He slumped weakly into her arms.
She looked down and nodded to Fu Zeyan.
"Mr. Fu, I gave him the anesthetic. What now?"
Fu Zeyan answered coldly. "Send him back to the Pei family. Let them teach their dog what he can and cannot do."
Pei Muchen's eyes locked on me, burning even as he faded.
I looked away, guilt twisting my gut.
We all thought it was over.
Then his trembling hand found a button.
Beep... beep... beep...
The helicopter exploded mid-air.
The blast wave flipped our car.
In the deafening boom, we all died.
I thought: ???
This was how far his obsession could go.
I thought that was the end of my life.
But when I opened my eyes again—
I was back on the day Pei Muchen's parents died.
The day my dad brought him home to the Su family.
Thirteen-year-old Pei Muchen looked harmless, smiling softly at me.
"Hello, Wanwan. I'm Pei Muchen. You can call me Brother."
A flash of darkness in his eyes sent ice through my veins.
I shouted without thinking, "Dad—send him away! I don't want him as my Brother!"
His eyes widened in shock.
Then excitement lit them up.
He grabbed my wrist and leaned in close.
"So... you reborn too."
"This time, I caught you first."
He said he was going to be the main one.
