Chapter 11 — The Discovery

Fate rarely announces its arrival.

Most of the time, it approaches quietly.

Step by step.

Small events.

Small choices.

Small carelessness.

Until, all at once, everything changes.

That was exactly how Bento and Isabel’s secret began to crumble.

Not through some great betrayal.

Not through an elaborate scheme.

But through a chain of seemingly insignificant details.

Details that eventually led Ricardo Valen?a straight to the truth.

And once the truth was found, it could no longer be hidden.

Over the following weeks, Ricardo grew even more watchful.

He observed.

He listened.

He waited.

Without raising suspicion.

Without showing too much interest.

He had learned early on that people give away their secrets when they believe no one is watching.

And that was exactly what happened.

One morning, he saw Rosa quietly hand an envelope to Isabel in the ranch gardens.

The exchange lasted only a few seconds.

But it was enough.

In that instant, every suspicion he’d had gained new weight.

Later, taking advantage of a moment when the maid was distracted, he managed to check the place where she usually kept the correspondence.

He didn’t find much.

But he found enough.

An old envelope.

Already empty.

On the front, just a few words.

“To Miss Isabel Albuquerque.”

And on the back, the sender.

“Bento Fagundes.”

Ricardo stood frozen for a few seconds.

He knew that name.

Everyone at the ranch did.

The ranch hand.

The young man who had left for the war years before.

The very same man now serving among the Ragamuffins.

The pieces finally fell into place.

The letters.

The secrecy.

Isabel’s resistance to every suitor.

The constant sadness.

It all made sense.

And what he’d uncovered was explosive.

For two full days, Ricardo remained torn.

He didn’t know what to do.

He was fond of Isabel.

Not in a romantic way.

But as a distant cousin.

A friend.

Someone he enjoyed talking with.

He knew the news would cause suffering.

A great deal of suffering.

At the same time, hiding it from the colonel seemed impossible.

Especially given Anselmo Albuquerque’s temperament.

In the end, he made his decision.

A decision that would change everyone’s life.

The meeting took place on a rainy afternoon.

The colonel was in his study, going over documents related to the ranch’s production.

Ricardo asked to speak with him.

The young man’s grave expression caught his attention at once.

“What happened?”

Ricardo hesitated.

But only for a moment.

“I need to talk to you about Isabel.”

The colonel’s face turned hard.

“What about her?”

“I discovered something.”

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

“Go on.”

Ricardo took a deep breath.

“She’s been keeping up a secret correspondence for years.”

“With whom?”

The question came out dry.

Direct.

Dangerous.

Ricardo answered.

“Bento Fagundes.”

The world seemed to stop.

For a few seconds, the colonel didn’t react.

As though his mind refused to accept what he’d just heard.

Then came the explosion.

Anselmo shot to his feet.

The chair toppled backward.

His face turned red.

His eyes went hard.

Furious.

“Are you certain of this?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have proof?”

Ricardo handed over the envelope he’d found.

The colonel stared at the name.

Bento Fagundes.

The common ranch hand.

The widow’s son.

The boy who had grown up working his land.

A mixture of disbelief and outrage overtook him.

“How long?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

But I believe since before the war.

The colonel’s fists clenched.

He felt betrayed.

Humiliated.

Made a fool of.

In his mind, this was no mere romance.

It was an affront.

A violation of the natural order of things.

An attack on the honor of the Albuquerque name.

That same night, Isabel was summoned to the study.

The moment she walked in, she knew something was wrong.

Her father stood behind the desk.

Motionless.

His gaze cold.

Ricardo stood near the window.

Her heart began to race.

“Sit down.”

The colonel’s voice was different.

Dangerous.

She obeyed.

“I want to ask you something.”

Isabel felt her stomach clench.

“Yes, Father?”

Anselmo set the envelope on the desk.

The world seemed to disappear.

She recognized the handwriting at once.

Recognized the name.

Recognized everything.

There was no denying it now.

No way to run from it.

The secret was over.

The silence stretched on for several seconds.

Then came the question.

“How long?”

Isabel didn’t answer.

“How long have you kept up this relationship?”

His voice grew harder.

She slowly raised her eyes.

And did something that surprised both men.

She didn’t lie.

“Since before the war.”

The colonel closed his eyes for a moment.

As though trying to master his own rage.

“Do you understand what you’ve done?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

You don’t.

His voice rang through the study.

“You’re speaking of a ranch hand.”

A servant.

A man with no standing.

No fortune.

No name.

“I’m speaking of the man I love.”

The answer came firm.

Without hesitation.

For the first time in years, Isabel stood up to her father directly.

And that only made him angrier.

The argument went on for nearly an hour.

Neither of them gave ground.

Neither backed down.

The more the colonel attacked Bento, the more fiercely Isabel defended him.

The more he demanded obedience, the more firmly she declared her love.

Until at last Anselmo understood something.

The situation was far more serious than he had realized.

This was no passing infatuation.

No youthful whim.

His daughter truly loved that man.

And that terrified him.

By the time the argument ended, the colonel had already made his decision.

An extreme decision.

Final.

Cruel.

But, in his eyes, necessary.

Over the following days, he set everything in motion in secret.

Letters were intercepted.

Rosa was removed from her duties closest to the young woman.

Surveillance tightened.

And letters stopped arriving.

For both Isabel and Bento.

Far away, Bento began to notice the silence.

The weeks passed.

No reply.

No message.

No word at all.

His worry turned to anguish.

Something was wrong.

He could feel it.

But he didn’t know what.

Nor did he imagine that the worst had already happened.

The secret had been discovered.

And the most powerful man at Santa Vitória Ranch was preparing to part the two lovers for good.

In the quiet hours before dawn, while rain fell over the gaúcho fields, Isabel was woken by a servant.

“Miss.”

We need to leave.

She sat up in bed.

Confused.

“Leave?”

“Your father gave the order.”

“Where to?”

The woman looked away.

“I don’t know.”

But the carriage is already waiting.

In that instant, a terrible feeling swept over her.

Something was happening.

Something irreversible.

And for the first time since the war began, she felt true fear.

Not for herself.

But for the future of her love with Bento.

A future that was beginning to vanish before her eyes.

With nothing she could do to stop it.
