Chapter 49

The instant she saw Kurt, she knew she was going to be okay. He would protect their baby. Her. He would make it okay. The baby would be okay.

But…Greer’s head hurt. She couldn’t breathe. Her chest hurt. He had kicked her when she’d been trying to get to her feet. In the chest.

In her chest, not her stomach. Not where the baby grew.

Her baby. All she wanted was for her baby to be okay.

Somehow, someone else yelled her name.

She looked up. Into a beautiful face. And she knew…she would be okay.

Her brother was there. And Kurt was there.

Her baby was going to be okay.

Gene pulled the tape off her mouth. Greer could breathe again. She pulled in as much air as she could. “He…hit me…kicked me…ribs…head. Help Kurt…don’t let him hurt Kurt.”

That’s when she remembered.

“Has a box cutter, Gene. Don’t let him hurt Kurt…”

“Chase can hold his own, kid. I’m more worried about you.”

There was someone else there, then. Gunn dropped to his knees beside her. “Greer. Hallelujah. Where are you hurt? Guth is coming.”

“Hit me. But not…where baby…Head hurts. Help Kurt. Gene, help him.”

“I got her,” Gunn said. “Go get that guy so he doesn’t get away.”

“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”
