CHAPTER 23
Lena turned on one bedside lamp and left the rest of the room in shadow.
Roman stood inside the closed door, broad shoulders nearly spanning it, every line of him controlled. She had spent months watching that control command rooms. Here, in her bedroom, it waited for her answer.
She crossed to him and opened the first button of his black shirt.
Before desire took the room, Lena placed both phones in a drawer and showed Roman the locked screen containing Helena’s emergency number.
“Privacy terms,” she said. “No photographs. No work devices in the bedroom. If the facility calls, we answer. If either of us needs space afterward, asking does not become rejection.”
“Agreed. My driver knows only that I am unavailable unless football operations calls. No security detail. No staff knows I am here.”
“And if someone sees your car?”
“We do not lie. We route the question through Jocelyn and Helena.”
Lena nodded. They had discussed contraception and exclusivity. Now they named the ordinary vulnerabilities people often left for after exposure.
“One more,” Roman said. “If I use a command and you no longer want that dynamic, say stop or change it. You do not have to protect my confidence.”
“Same for you. Dominance is something you offer, not something I can demand without your consent.”
His expression shifted. Powerful men were rarely reminded that their boundaries mattered inside the role others expected them to perform.
“Yes,” he said. “Same for me.”
Only then did she open his shirt.
“May I?” she asked.
“Yes.”
One button at a time, she revealed the powerful chest of a former linebacker: dark hair, old scars, a pale line near his ribs, muscle preserved by discipline rather than vanity. Roman did not assist. He let her set the pace she had required.
“Hands at your sides,” she said.
His eyes darkened. “Yes.”
The ease of his agreement unsettled something in her. Yielding had always felt like the instant another person gained leverage. Roman’s stillness gave the choice back to her repeatedly.
She pushed the shirt from his shoulders and ran both palms down his chest. His breath changed but his hands remained open beside his thighs.
“You want to touch me,” she said.
“Very much.”
“Where?”
His gaze traveled over her dress. “Your face. Your waist. Every place you name after that.”
“My face.”
Roman lifted both hands slowly and held her jaw. The care of it almost undid her. His thumbs moved beneath her cheekbones as if learning mattered more than taking.
Lena kissed him. He answered without seizing control, mouth warm and demanding only where she invited. She opened the zipper at the back of her dress and turned.
“Help me.”
He drew the zipper down, knuckles grazing her spine. The dress loosened and fell. She wore black lace beneath it, chosen because she liked the way it made her feel before he ever saw it.
Roman’s low curse carried reverence rather than ownership.
“You may touch my waist,” she said.
His hands settled there. Heat spread beneath each palm. He kissed the back of her neck, then stopped at the clasp of her bra.
“May I?”
“Yes.”
The garment joined her dress on the floor. He did not rush to cover her with his hands. He turned her, looked at her, and waited.
“More,” Lena whispered.
Roman bent to her breasts, using his mouth slowly until her fingers tightened in his silver-dark hair. Pleasure moved through her with humiliating speed.
“Bed,” she said.
He lifted his head. “Do you want me to carry you?”
The question mattered. A possessive gesture, converted into choice.
“Yes.”
He lifted her easily and laid her on the pale sheets. She drew him down by the shoulders, kissing him while she opened his belt. When his body finally covered hers, his weight remained braced away until she pulled him closer.
“Tell me,” he said against her throat.
“I want your weight. I want to feel held, not pinned.”
He lowered himself enough to surround her without removing her movement. The distinction entered her body before her mind could audit it.
Roman used his mouth and hands until she stopped measuring sound. Every time pleasure sharpened, he watched for her response rather than treating it as automatic permission. Lena directed him with words at first, then with fingers in his hair and the tilt of her hips.
“Look at me,” she said when the first climax gathered.
His deep brown eyes held hers. No audience, no rank, no stolen credit. Only witness.
Release broke through her. Lena heard her own voice—soft, unarmed, nothing like argument—and Roman stayed with her through every aftershock.
When she could breathe, she opened the nightstand and handed him a condom.
“Still yes?” he asked.
“Yes. But now I want you to choose the pace.”
“You said you direct every threshold.”
“I’m directing this one. I choose to follow.”
Understanding moved across his face.
He undressed fully, rolled on the protection, and returned to her. Lena opened beneath him. Roman entered slowly, stopping until her body accepted him.
“Good?”
“More.”
The dominance she had sensed in him from the first meeting emerged as attention made forceful. He set a deep, controlled rhythm, one hand linked with hers above the pillow only after she offered it. His other hand anchored her hip without preventing movement.
“Tell me what you need,” he said.
“Don’t make me fight for it.”
“Never here.”
He changed the angle when she asked. Pleasure built again, less contained now. Lena matched him until the distinction between leading and following became fluid—his strength serving the rhythm, her choice shaping it.
They came close together, imperfectly and without performance. Roman’s control fractured in a rough sound against her neck. Lena held him while his body went heavy by degrees, accepting the vulnerability of a man who usually allowed no room to carry him.
Afterward, he disposed of the condom and returned with water. He did not treat care as a claim to stay.
He also brought a warm cloth, then paused beside the bed. “Do you want help or privacy?”
The question was so ordinary Lena nearly cried.
“Help.”
Roman cared for her without turning gentleness into ceremony.
When she reached for him, he allowed the same care in return instead of insisting his body required nothing.
They moved around each other without rank: water, discarded clothes, a cracked window against the summer heat, the lamp lowered because she asked.
“Any pain?” he said when they settled.
“No. Good soreness. You?”
“My pride suffered several procedural delays.”
“Recoverable?”
“Ask medical.”
She laughed into the pillow. Roman watched the sound with an expression too exposed for a man who had spent the evening proving his control.
“What?” she asked.
“I expected the sex to be the dangerous part.”
“And?”
“This is worse.”
He meant the unstructured quiet. No decision pending. No negotiated command to give his attention a shape. Lena understood because she felt the same fear: tenderness without a problem to solve could reveal needs neither of them had converted into competence.
“Then stay for ten minutes without managing it,” she said.
“You have a clock running?”
“No.”
“Reckless.”
They lay facing each other. Roman told her the pale scar near his ribs came from a college practice collision he had hidden for two days.
Lena told him the small mark on her knee came from trying to outrun Camila on a bicycle down a hill they had both been forbidden to use.
Nothing in the exchange improved governance or won a game.
At some point his thumb moved across her wrist. “Still good?”
“Yes. You can stop asking every thirty seconds. Consent includes listening to continuity.”
“I prefer auditable intervals.”
“Your audit is becoming disruptive.”
He smiled. “Noted.”
“Do you want me here in the morning?” he asked.
The question reached the fear beneath the sex. Roman was more frightened by quiet than scandal. Lena was more frightened by tenderness than conflict.
“Yes,” she said. “Not because the night requires it. Because I want coffee with you.”
He lay beside her and pulled the sheet over them. “I don’t know how to do this casually.”
“Neither do I.”
“That isn’t a promise beyond what we discussed.”
“No. It’s information.”
Roman laughed softly. Lena rested her head against his chest, hearing the heart that governed no one but the man beneath her ear.
Before sleep, she said, “Privacy has an expiration point.”
“Permanent governance or operational need.”
“And no secret version of me that disappears when public life becomes inconvenient.”
His arms tightened, then deliberately loosened enough to preserve choice. “Never.”
The word was too large for a first night. Lena did not challenge it.
She listened to him breathe until the quiet became something neither of them had to control.
