The beach by The Hideaway at first light
Evening classes and good vibrations
Wednesday
K it and I are up at first light next morning so Shadow and I can get back to mine before St Aidan central grapevine wakes up for the day.
Kit’s bed sheets? White Egyptian cotton, with pale grey waffle throws. How did we sleep? Solidly – but only for the last half-hour before the alarm woke us.
My arms are full and as I hesitate for a moment on Kit’s porch to readjust the rug I’m carrying, he’s at the door.
‘I wish you’d let me walk you home.’
‘I’m fine.’ If he came to mine, I’m not sure I’d let him go again, but before I leave there’s something I want to ask. ‘What are we doing here? Just so I know.’
Kit’s eyes narrow. ‘Which bit? That part where you were upside down hanging off the bed or the bits where it was so good I felt like I was going to expire?’
I shrug. ‘All of it?’
‘Do you want to give it a name?’
‘Not as such. I’d like to put it into context – we both said we didn’t want entanglements.’
‘Will it work if we think of enjoying the moment? Doing it if we want, not if we don’t.’
‘Taking a day at a time?’
His face slides into a grin. ‘We can take it minute by minute if it makes it easier? Any time it stops being fun, we’ll think again.’
‘No ties, no catches, just seizing the day.’
‘That sounds like a St Aidan kind of plan.’
I’m glad we got that sorted. ‘Great. I’ll see you at the studio later.’
He looks at his watch. ‘Three hours’ time. If you come ten minutes early I’ll make you a bacon subway.’
