The Correspondent (Continued)
Florencia Martinelli
ITALY
Dear Ms. Martinelli,
Many years ago you came to my chambers at a courthouse in Maryland with your sons and begged for mercy for your husband, Enzo, and I extended none.
I am an old woman now, and I have a few great regrets, and this is one of them.
Someone I loved very much said once to me there is no parallel universe; there is no ‘what could have been if only.’ How I wish there was.
I’ve now come to know the circumstances and manner of Enzo’s death.
I am sorry for the suffering my blind bitterness caused for you and your family.
I wish there was something I could do, but I know very well there is no way to bring back the dead.
In regret I am yours ever,
Sybil Van Antwerp
