Chapter 11

The morning sun was low on the horizon and cast long shadows on the trees as Aiden rode through the woods, the rhythmic thudding of his horse’s hooves a soothing counterpoint to the storm of thoughts swirling in his head.

As he guided his horse along a narrow trail, Aiden spotted movement ahead. His eyes caught a flash of pale fabric amongst the trees, and he slowed his horse to a trot in an attempt to peer through the foliage.

To his surprise, he realized it was Katie’s slender form. She was wandering through the woods, a basket swinging from her arm. Aiden halted his horse, his curiosity piqued.

What is she doin’ out here on her own?

Curiosity, concern, and irritation simmered within him at her recklessness. The woods could be a dangerous place for a vulnerable and unprotected woman. His instincts told him to go back and leave her to her privacy, but something stronger kept him rooted in place.

He watched silently as Katie walked deeper into the woods and followed a narrow path that led to a small clearing by a stream.

As she moved with a quiet grace, she appeared lost in her thoughts and unaware of his presence.

Aiden dismounted silently, tied his horse to a tree, and began to follow her on foot, keeping his distance.

Where are ye headed, lass?

She stopped by the stream where the water trickled over the rocks in a soothing rhythm.

Aiden watched as Katie began to unpack her basket.

She carefully laid a linen cloth over a mossy rock, smoothing out the creases with delicate fingers.

She then spread out a fur blanket on the ground, creating a soft, inviting spot for her to sit.

It was clear that she intended to have a picnic, and Aiden couldn’t help but feel a pang of longing as he observed her simple, serene actions.

Katie retrieved a small book from her basket and placed it on the fur blanket, then reached up to untie the ribbon at the back of her dress.

Aiden’s breath caught in his throat, and he looked away quickly as alarm surged through him.

He inwardly cursed himself for intruding on her solitude, but his body refused to leave.

Once she’d settled herself comfortably onto her blanket, Aiden watched, mesmerized, as Katie loosened the strings further and parted the back of her dress to the cool air and sunshine.

She then pulled down the collar of her dress so it rested halfway across her upper arms. Her dewy skin was milky white and supple.

Aiden struggled silently with the burgeoning lust that snaked down to his already stiffening member and suppressed a groan.

His resolve to keep his distance was crumbling rapidly.

He clenched his hands into fists, ready to battle with the demons inside of him that told him to lay her on the blanket and take her.

He ached to touch her skin, to pull her dress even lower and run his tongue between her breasts, over her nipples, and down her stomach.

His now rigid manhood pulsed and strained with rampant need.

He absentmindedly ran his hand along its length, cursing himself for his weakness.

With another low, pained moan, Aiden carefully backed out of the grove until he was far enough away that she would not be able to hear his hasty retreat.

Reaching his horse, Aiden untied the reins with trembling hands and mounted quickly. He knew he couldn’t remain there any longer without turning his sordid fantasy into reality. He needed to channel and release his pent-up energy into an activity that would quash his unruly desires.

He rode back to the castle in silence as his thoughts raced. As he dismounted, he spotted Malcolm and Oliver nearby, who both looked up at him as he approached. Aiden knew he had to work off the palpable tension in his body before it consumed him.

“Malcolm, Oliver,” Aiden called out, his voice firm and commanding. The guards in the yard paused their drills, turning to look at him. “’Tis a good day for practice, do ye nae think? A sparrin’ session will do us all some good.”

Malcolm exchanged a glance with Oliver, both sensing the intensity in Aiden’s demeanor. They nodded in unison, knowing better than to question him when he was in this mood.

Aiden handed his horse’s reins to a stable boy and strode to the center of the yard, already shedding his coat in preparation.

His blood was simmering, and his mind remained plagued by images of Katie by the stream.

He needed this fight, needed to purge these thoughts from his head, even if it meant driving himself to exhaustion.

As he readied his sword and faced his opponents, Aiden pushed everything else aside and focused his attention solely on the task at hand. For now, it was the only way he could keep the storm within him at bay.

At midday, Katie emerged from the woods, her spirits lifted by the peaceful time she had spent by the stream.

The fresh air and solitude had done wonders for her mood, and she felt a renewed sense of calm as she made her way back to the castle.

The soft rustling of her dress and cloak contrasted with the crunch of leaves underfoot.

Her hair was still damp from the stream, a lingering reminder of her serene time in nature.

As she approached the castle, she noticed a commotion in the courtyard.

Her heart sank as she recognized Aiden amidst the group, sparring fiercely with Malcolm, Oliver, and several of the guards.

The clang of their swords and their grunts of exertion filled the air.

Katie’s instinct was to retreat and avoid disrupting their combat.

She tried to move quietly as the very air around her crackled with Aiden’s ferocity.

The intensity of his focus was tangible.

She could feel his gaze on her as she tried to make her way into the castle unnoticed.

Fury radiated from Aiden, each frenzied swing and strike of his sword an aggressive release of the tension and frustration that he bore.

Katie bit her lip and felt a pang of guilt.

The last thing she wanted was to be the cause of such visible distress.

Her heart pounded as she glanced back at him.

Aiden’s gaze was fixed on her, his eyes dark and intense.

Despite the chaos of the sparring match, his focus did not waver.

The strength in his stance and the flex of his muscles under his damp linen tunic were both captivating and intimidating.

What would it feel like to have those hard muscles capture her, to have him take what he wanted?

He moved with a precision and power that spoke of years of intense and disciplined training.

Each swing of his sword echoed the havoc inside of him.

Even in his state of rage, he is captivating.

Katie felt a blush rise to her cheeks as their eyes met.

Their connection was electric, charged with the unspoken words and emotions that had been smoldering between them.

Her breath caught in her throat, and she swallowed hard as she struggled to maintain her composure.

She had hoped to avoid confrontation and maintain her distance, but it seemed that fate had other plans.

As Aiden knocked one of the guards to the ground with a particularly fierce strike, his eyes remained fixed on her.

The intensity of his stare was both thrilling and distressing, and Katie’s heart ached with longing.

She wished she could find a way to bridge the gap between them, but their situation was too complicated.

She knew that their connection was marred by duties and expectations that neither of them had wanted.

Unable to bear the intensity of Aiden’s stare any longer, Katie turned and hurried toward the castle.

Her steps were quick and purposeful, driven by a need to escape the emotions that had settled in her heart.

The sound of the sword fight faded into the background as she moved swiftly through the castle, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts and feelings.

She reached her room and, with trembling hands, fumbled with the key to lock the door behind her. Once safely inside, she leaned against the door and tried to steady her breathing. Unlike the chaos in the courtyard, the room was quiet and still, and its silence was nearly deafening.

Katie sat down on the edge of her bed and stared down at the stone floor.

She was concerned about the course of her future and was anxious about the choices that had been made on her behalf.

She desperately needed to find a resolution to the turmoil that surrounded her.

More than anything, she wanted to be near Aiden again, to learn about him and come to understand his thoughts, moods and demeanors and find some semblance of peace between them.

Katie rose from the bed and straightened to her full height, determined to fix her relationship with Aiden. She paced her room as she nibbled on her fingernail and sorted through a myriad of workable approaches.

No, I will not allow this to go on any longer. Something must change, and it must begin with me. I must become more approachable and less caustic. A beautiful bee is drawn to pollen, not a thorn.

Suddenly, a heavy knock startled her.

“A moment!” Katie called out, moving to the door as she tried to steel herself. “Who is it?”

“’Tis Griselda, me dear! Just checkin’ in to see if ye’ll be joinin’ me for supper,” Griselda called through the door. “As ye ken, yer weddin’ is tomorrow eve, so yer attendance wouldnae be expected or required should ye desire to keep yer traditions.”

“Ah, come in.” Katie smiled, unlocking the door and pulling it open so she could enter. “I should thank you. That stream is beautiful, and you were right—it is a perfect spot to read and relax.”

“Ye’re welcome, Katie dear.” Griselda smiled. “So, would ye like to join us downstairs for dinner?”

“Now?” Katie asked, her throat tightening with anxiety.

She didn’t want to have another confrontation with Aiden, but she knew she would see him tomorrow, and many more times in the months and years that followed. She was dismayed by the idea of having to attend another feast before that time.

“Nay, nay, dear. Cook willnae have the roast ready until sunset, but it will be a great feast—I chose the menu meself.” Griselda nodded proudly. “Will ye join us for a single hour at the start of the feast, afore ye get some rest for tomorrow’s ceremony?”

A long, uncomfortable pause followed Griselda’s invitation. Katie did not know how to respond without offending her hostess.

“Katie, ye’ve been in here for a while,” Griselda said, her voice filled with concern, having sensed Katie’s dilemma. “Is everythin’ alright with ye?”

Katie’s gaze fell to the floor as she fidgeted with the trim on her dress. “I just… I don’t want to upset Aiden any more than I already have. I’d rather keep the peace with him until the wedding.”

Griselda’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “I dinnae ken one reason Aiden would have to be upset with ye. Is there somethin’ between the two of ye that I dinnae ken of?”

Katie took a deep breath, her voice trembling slightly. “He refuses me so often. His rejection and anger are so intense and hurtful to me. We are complete opposites in so many ways, and I do not have any idea how to mend the fence between us.”

Griselda’s face softened with understanding.

She walked over and pulled Katie to sit beside her on the bed.

“Katie, me dear, ye must understand that Aiden is a man of strong principles and deep emotions. His anger and distance arenae necessarily signs of his indifference toward you. In fact, they may be his way of dealin’ with the complexities of his feelings. ”

Katie looked at Griselda and nodded her head as she mulled over the insight she’d offered. “But how can I be sure? He is usually so distant and detached, and each time I try to get close to him, he pulls further away from me.”

Griselda took Katie’s hands in her own and gave them a reassuring squeeze. “Aiden may struggle with expressin’ his emotions, but that doesnae mean he doesnae care. He has always been proud and principled, and that can make it difficult for him to let down his guard.”

Katie shook her head, her doubts still clouding her thoughts. “I’m afraid he’ll never truly care for me, and I’ll be trapped in a cold marriage where I’m doing nothing more than fulfilling a duty.”

Griselda pulled Katie into a comforting embrace. “I’ve seen it in the way he looks at ye even when he tries to hide it. He is strugglin’ with his inner conflicts, but that doesnae mean he lacks the capacity to love.”

Katie clung to Griselda, finding comfort in her revelations. “I don’t know, Griselda. I wish I could believe that. I yearn for a future where things look different.”

Griselda pulled back slightly, looking into Katie’s eyes with a determined expression.

“I understand yer fears, and ‘tis natural to feel this way. But ye need to remember that a marriage isnae only about the present moment. ‘Tis about buildin’ a life together, overcomin’ challenges, and findin’ ways to grow closer.

Ye and Aiden have the potential to create somethin’ of beauty, even if it doesnae seem clear right now. ”

Katie nodded slowly, feeling more reassured. “What should I do?”

Griselda smiled warmly. “Ye need to embrace yer role as the new lady of the castle. ‘Tis important to connect with the local clan leaders, lairds and their wives. They will become yer support system. Yer presence at social events will also help establish yer place here.”

Katie sighed, a mix of resignation and determination in her eyes. “You’re right. I suppose I should dress in my finest and make a genuine effort to fit in.”

Griselda’s face brightened with approval. “That’s the spirit! And remember, ye’re nae alone in this. I’ll be by yer side all night, helpin’ ye navigate the many introductions and witty conversations.”

Katie managed another hopeful smile as her spirits lifted. “Thank you, Griselda. I’m grateful for your support.”

Griselda stood and offered her hand to Katie. “Come on, then. Let’s get ye ready. ‘Tis goin’ to be a beautiful evenin’, and we’ll make sure ‘tis one to remember.”

Katie took Griselda’s hand and stood up, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. “I guess it’s time to face the music, as people say.”

Griselda chuckled softly. “Indeed. And remember, ye’re goin’ to do wonderfully. Just be yerself, and everythin’ will fall into place.”

As they walked together toward Katie’s dressing room, Katie felt a spark of optimism brighten her mood. She still had doubts and fears, but Griselda’s encouragement gave her the strength to face the challenges ahead.

With a final glance at her reflection in the mirror, Katie adjusted her dress, took a deep breath, and readied herself to step into her new role with increased confidence.

Here goes nothing.
