Chapter 10
CHAPTER 10
C ade was standing off to one side by himself, a drink in his hand, and his eyes tracking Peyton. It was getting harder for him to stay away from his mate, but he had to be strong and keep as far away from him as possible. His only positive was the fact that he could hide his scent, and Peyton didn’t know they were mates.
“Cade, is everything alright?” Donovan asked, walking over to him.
Cade jumped. He was so focused on Peyton that he was oblivious to everything else, not really a good thing when he was part of the king’s personal guards. Cade nodded. “Yes thanks, sire.”
“Just Donovan, Cade.”
Cade nodded.
“The Fates picked well when they picked your dragon mate,” Donovan said, looking at Peyton.
Cade looked at him in shock. “How did you know?”
“You can’t stop looking at him. Your eyes follow him everywhere.”
“Oh,” Cade sighed softly, his shoulders slumping.
Donovan looked at him in surprise. “Oh? I thought you’d be pleased you found your mate.”
Cade shook his head. “No, not really. Thankfully, he doesn’t know we’re mates, so I can figure out how to break the mating before he finds out.”
Donovan looked shocked. “But why would you do that? Is he not to your liking?”
Cade gave a sad laugh. “He is everything I could want in a mate, but I can never mate with him.”
“But–” Donovan started to say.
“I mean it, sire – I mean, Donovan,” Cade said, interrupting him. “I’m going to ask Tudor to release me and send me back to the Palace. It’s the best thing to do.” And with that he turned and walked away, leaving Donovan alone and stunned.
“Dad, everything alright?” Dane asked, walking over with Tudor and Alex.
“Not really, no, but it’s not my story to tell.” He looked at Tudor. “Cade will be coming to talk to you soon.”
“Have I done something wrong I’m trying my best if he is unhappy with me ...”
Donovan put his hand on Tudor’s arm. “You’ve done nothing wrong, Tudor. Cade is going through something and I think he needs help.”
“If he needs help I’ll do everything I can to help him —” He stopped talking when Alex touched his arm.
“ We will do everything we can to help him,” Alex amended.
“Thanks,” Donovan said, looking at them both.
“So is your pack always like this?” Wynter asked Paris and Ashton.
They both laughed. “Not the angry part, but the chaos and mayhem, pretty much,” Ashton said.
“It’s certainly been this way since I arrived,” Paris added.
“I’ve been following your career, Paris. You’ve done amazingly well,” Saxon said, smiling at him. “All those years of teaching certainly paid off.”
Paris laughed. “Maybe. Wynter, Saxon was the best teacher I ever had.”
“Thank you for that,” Saxon said before he shook his head. “I can’t believe my son is the Dragon King’s teacher.”
“And doing a good job, but he has his work cut out for him. Puff was kicked out of his home when he was fourteen and lived on the streets until he arrived here on his eighteenth birthday. He has a lot to learn about dragon kind and normal schooling,” Ashton explained with a slight frown.
Saxon looked confused. “Why about dragon kind?”
“My brother and his family bound Bob until Puff was eighteen. Puff always thought he didn’t have a dragon.”
“We couldn’t figure out why Bob was only bound until Puff was eighteen though,” Ashton told them.
“Hades probably knows. Next time he’s around, you should ask him,” Wynter suggested.
Ashton nodded. “Yeah, I might do that, just in case the demon decides to come back after Puff and Bob.”
“I pity any demon stupid enough to come after this pack,” Saxon said.
Ashton gave an evil grin. “Exactly, Barnabus has no idea what’s coming for him.”
