Chapter 24
CHAPTER 24
B rook was sitting at the breakfast table the next morning. For some reason he felt unsettled. He tried talking to Silver, but Silver seemed to be in a daze, as if something had stunned him.
Demi grabbed his hand. “What is it?”
Brook shook his head. “I don’t know, something seems wrong with Silver, and I’m feeling unsettled. Maybe he’s realised I’m not the right human for him.”
Demi shook his head. “I can guarantee he would never think that.”
Puff looked at Brook, something was wrong. Bob, are Brook and Silver okay?
He felt Bob come forward smiling. They are, but young Brook needs to go to his hoard. Tell Brook and the God of Fear we are sending them there.
Okay, but it’s nothing bad, right?
It’s not, but you need to hurry. Bob told him.
“Brook,” Puff croaked out, getting his attention. “I need to send you and Demi to your hoard.”
“You do?” Brook asked, surprised.
Puff nodded. “And you need to go now.”
The next moment they both vanished.
“Hey, where did Brook and Demi go?” Willow asked from further down the table. The room fell silent.
“Brook and Demi needed to go to Brook’s hoard, Bob just sent them there,” Puff replied brokenly.
“Is something wrong?” Blake asked in concern.
Puff shook his head. “Not according to Bob, just important.”
Brook and Demi appeared in his hoard cave.
“Why do you think we’ve been sent here?” Demi asked, looking around.
“No idea. I guess we need to have a look round. Maybe being here will help Silver with whatever’s wrong.”
“Well, let’s get looking,” Demi said.
Brook started walking around looking for something, anything, to explain what was going on. He felt Silver come forward.
We need to go into that corner.
We can do that, Brook answered back. “Whatever we need is in that corner,” Brook told Demi, pointing.
They walked to the corner. It was empty except for a medium-sized wooden box. The box was made of rosewood, inlaid with mother of pearl and precious gems. It was truly stunning.
Silver, should I open the box? Brook asked him nervously.
Yes, young Brook. I honestly never thought this would happen.
What? Brook asked.
Just open the box.
Brook knelt in front of the box and ran his hand over the jewels.
Demi knelt beside him. “Whatever it is, we’ll face it together,” Demi assured him.
Brook smiled at him. “We will.” Brook took a breath and, putting two hands on the side of the lid, lifted it up and gasped. Inside, resting on a bed of silver silk, was a dragon egg.
“Whoa,” Demi gasped, looking at the large black and red shell.
“A dragon egg.” Brook reverently touched the egg. As he did, the red shone brighter. He was surprised at how smooth it felt. “Silver?” Brook queried.
I never thought this day would happen. I gifted this egg to Maggon. He put it in this box and shoved it out of the way. Truthfully, I was glad he did. I never should have given him this special gift, but I thought it would help us bond. Instead, I should have waited for you and our Demi. It is through your love that we now have a baby dragon growing inside. Our baby should be born in about three months.
Brook looked at Demi.
“I heard,” Demi said, looking stunned and smiling. “In three months we’ll have a baby.”
Brook leant into Demi. “We’re going to be parents.”
“We are. Silver, does our baby need to stay here with your hoard or can we take them to the pack house?” Demi asked.
Our baby can be moved. It would be best to keep our baby in this box for safety, but you can leave the lid open.
“We can do that,” Brook said. “I’m going to close the lid just while we leave here and go back home,” Brook said, doing just that. “Demi, take us home.”
Demi nodded and suddenly they were back in the kitchen with Brook holding the box.
Everyone was still sat in the kitchen when they arrived back. Silence descended.
“You’re back,” Forrest said. “What’s in the box? Is that why you both got sent to your hoard?”
“Was it bad you look a little stunned is there anything we can do to help you?” Tudor asked, only stopping when Alex touched his arm.
Brook put the box on the table. “It’s nothing bad, just a bit stunning and crazily good.” He opened the lid and gasps were heard as he gently lifted the dragon egg out. Again, the red glowed brighter.
“A dragon egg?” Blake gasped, sounding shocked.
“Yes,” Demi replied. “Our baby will be born in about three months.”
Brook gently put the dragon egg back in the box.
Willow walked over and looked at the dragon egg, then Brook. “How did you give birth to the egg?”
“He probably pooped it out,” Forrest joked, grinning.
The table burst into laughter.
“I did not poop out an egg, thanks very much, oh brother mine,” Brook said laughing, and then shivering at the thought.
“Dragon magic,” Puff told Forrest.
“Our new sibling is going to be so loved,” Willow said. “Me, Forrest, and Tobin are gonna have fun playing with them.”
Everyone stood up and offered the soon-to-be parents congratulatory hugs.
Demi blushed. He’d never been hugged by so many people before, or been so accepted. He got the biggest hug from Ares. “Congratulations. You’ll be an amazing father, my son.”
“Thank you,” Demi replied, hugging Ares back and sniffing a little.
