Chapter 30

Thirty

Blair

I released a long yawn as I woke up.

I’d slept for who knows how long and hadn’t had one nightmare in the safety of Enzo’s bed.

The devil had become my protector.

But this moment of peace didn’t trick me. I wondered how long I’d have it before Enzo dragged me into another version of hell.

Yawning again, I stretched my arms forward as I sat up, finding Enzo on the couch along the opposite wall with his laptop open on his lap. His feet were kicked up on the coffee table.

When he noticed I was awake, he dropped the laptop to his side and stood, walking toward me.

“You missed me while I was away,” he stated matter-of-factly.

I furrowed my brows in a sleepy glare. “I did no such thing.”

He sat on the edge of the bed. “It’s okay. You can pretend you didn’t.” Grabbing my hand, he pulled us both to our feet. “Though how many times did you text me?”

“Always know where your predators are,” I grumbled as he guided me toward the couch, dropping me onto an empty leather seat cushion. “Where were you?”

He strolled toward the fridge, pulling out two bottled waters. “Taking care of business.”

“You’re a college kid. What business do you need to take care of?”

“That’s where you’re wrong.” He handed me a water. “A college kid is about number twenty on the list of who I am, Blair.”

He plucked his laptop from the couch, setting it on the table, and the couch dipped as he sat back down.

I rolled my shoulders back as I took a sip of water. “What time is it?”

He checked his watch. “Four thirty.”

“Shit,” I hissed, slapping my hand against my forehead. “I’ve missed all my classes.”

“And?”

“And? Unlike you, I have to pass my classes.”

I didn’t know why I thought he didn’t need to pass. But I couldn’t see Arisono expelling him as easily as she would me.

“They’ll pass you,” he said with that same certainty he always had.

I blew out an upward breath, rolling my eyes. “Oh, yes, Professor Nelson really appreciated me falling asleep in his class and then Cedric pretty much putting him in his place in front of the other students. He’ll blame me for that and find a way to fail me.”

“He won’t fail you.” Again, that fucking certainty.

“How do you know?”

“If he fails you, then he’ll have to deal with me. Nelson doesn’t want that. He tried that with my last Fawn and learned his lesson.”

“What was his lesson?”

“None of your business.”

“Speaking of Clarissa …” I let my words trail off in hopes that he’d finish that sentence.

Unfortunately, he didn’t.

He played these games better than I did and knew all the tricks.

“Did you push her out the window?” I finally asked when he didn’t bite.

The corner of his mouth lifted. “Do I look like a man who’d push someone out a window?”

“Yes,” I said with a heavy, certain nod. “You absolutely do.”

He scrubbed a hand over his face. “I didn’t push her out the window. She jumped. Suicide. The facts were clear as day. I wasn’t even on campus that day.”

“But Jett—”

“I thought we’d already established Jett was a liar.”

“He didn’t lie to me about the Night Sons.” I gave him a pointed look.

“He didn’t tell you the full truth.” He took a long drink of his water, and his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed it down.

I raised one finger and started counting off on my hands. “Secret society.” Another finger raised. “Fawns.” Another finger. “Making my life hell.”

He capped and dropped his water bottle, allowing it to roll across the couch and fall in a crack between the cushions.

I truly believed that Enzo hadn’t killed Clarissa. There was something in my gut that told me he hadn’t done it. Even Daphne, who wasn’t his fan, hinted that Enzo hadn’t physically pushed her.

But I did believe that he was a part of the pack that had driven her to jump. The people around us can be silent killers in ways they didn’t know.

But there was always that chance that I was wrong too. I could’ve been dick hypnotized from all the orgasms he’d given me and ignoring the red flags.

That was all Enzo was. Red flags.

Though I kept following those flags straight to him.

Ss if they led the way to my happiness.

His voice turned deeper as he said, “Am I making your life hell, my Fawn?” He ran his hand beneath his lower lip. “I’m almost positive you were in heaven not too long ago when I was thrusting my cock inside your tight—”

Without thinking, I heaved forward, jumping on him to cover his mouth, shocking us both. Enzo caught me around the waist, pulling me onto his lap, and for a moment, neither of us moved.

My cheeks were red as reality hit me, and when I tried to climb off his lap, he slammed his palms against my thighs, holding me in place.

His hands splayed out along my bare thighs, slightly under my skirt, as my shins were pushed along each of his thighs. Lowering one hand, he played with the upper hem of my knee-length sock.

“Why aren’t you sleeping?” he asked, focusing on my sock’s lace.

I fidgeted in his lap. “Who says I haven’t been?”

His chin rose, his eyes snapping to mine. “Your face.” He tapped my cheek with his thumb. “You look like sleep-deprived shit.”

“Thanks,” I grumbled.

“I can’t have my Fawn looking tired. Can’t have her tired. You’re supposed to be well rested for when I need you.”

My shoulders rounded forward as my brain lost all words.

“You still have a lot to tell me about yourself, Blair,” he added.

I gulped, remembering our unfinished conversation about my father and my past.

I’d spilled some of my secrets, but not all of them.

I’d never vomit all of them out.

Enzo slowly started unbuttoning my shirt. When I tried to grab his wrist, he used his other hand to drag my hand off his, finger by finger. My shirt opened, displaying my white bra.

“Very plain,” he muttered, running his hand along the top of my breasts. “Very boring. My Fawn isn’t boring. I want to see and learn about every version of you.” He patted my thigh. “Get up. Time for us to go.”

“Go where?” I asked.

When I didn’t move fast enough, he kicked his leg over, depositing me on the floor as if I were a pillow he no longer wanted there.

“Fawns don’t ask questions. Their blind loyalty causes them to simply follow,” he replied.
