Chapter 33

Thirty-Three

Enzo

I ran through the tunnels, making the necessary twists and turns, and all I could think of were the words Benny had just told me over the phone.

I should’ve told Nico why I was leaving, but I had no patience for waiting for him to get his shit together. He was a big boy, and he’d find a way to the city.

I couldn’t deal with his drunk ass right now.

Not when my father had been shot.

I heard Blair behind me but didn’t slow down. Her loud breathing echoed through the tunnels. Poor thing was really struggling to keep up.

The words, Go back, Blair, were on the tip of my tongue, but they didn’t leave my mouth.

My lungs hurt, but I didn’t stop running. I figured Blair would eventually give up, but she didn’t. I was impressed.

When I reached the door that led to the parking garage, I stalled. It was time to determine how the rest of the night would go.

I could shut the door and leave Blair, or I could wait for her.

She was a few feet away from me. Even in my panic, I couldn’t help but think the way she ran was cute. Her face was flushed, and she looked ready to pass out.

But she didn’t quit.

Like my own Little Engine That Could.

I told myself I’d give her five seconds, but when that passed, I pushed it to ten. Then twenty. She made it in seventeen.

I opened the door, and Blair followed me to my Porsche in the third spot from the front.

My hands were shaking so hard that I nearly dropped my key fob while unlocking the car. Blair hopped in the passenger seat without saying a word.

I glanced at her before starting the engine and backing out. All I could hear was her heavy breathing while she buckled her seat belt, and I drove up the ramp that led to the exit.

I should’ve dropped her off at her dorm, but I turned in the opposite direction. I drove and drove and drove until we couldn’t even see the university behind us.

Gripping the steering wheel, I silently repeated, Please don’t be dead. Please don’t be dead.
