Chapter 31
Domenic
My father storms back into the room. “The body that was found is one of our drivers.”
“Drivers? For what?”
“The delivery trucks.”
I process this latest piece of information. “So, someone stopped one of our delivery trucks, killed the driver, and stole his uniform?”
I know we’re both thinking the same thing—that whoever has done this has done it to gain access to the college. Shit.
“Do we know which truck he was driving?” I ask.
My father shakes his head. “Not yet, but I’m going down to the loading bay to see if we can figure out which one.”
“What about security cameras?”
“It’s not going to be much good to us if this son of a bitch is in a uniform, and it was far enough out of the college boundary not to be covered by their scope.”
I remember the uniform involves a baseball cap that they’re bound to have pulled down low over their face to avoid being recognized. Not that we’d know what any of the delivery drivers look like, anyway. We wouldn’t know on the cameras if someone looked different than they should.
My phone rings, and I check the screen. It’s Kirill.
“Yes?” I bark, aware I sound far too much like my dad.
“Apparently, Mackenzie was going down to the kitchen to find her mom,” Kirill says. “I’m on my way down there now.”
The kitchen. Potentially where this person would have entered.
“Let me know when you find her,” I say and end the call.
I glance over at my dad. “Lucia and Mackenzie might both be down in the kitchen.”
My fear is reflected in my father’s eyes. He immediately swipes the screen of his cell phone and places it to his ear. He doesn’t need any introducing, and I assume he’s speaking to the head of the security team.
“If you see Lucia and her daughter, have them both brought up to our quarters right away.” He pauses and then adds, “And don’t let them give you an argument about it. Put them over your shoulder if you have to.”
I almost smile at this, and I would have, if the situation weren’t so serious. It’s amusing that my dad is also aware that these are two women who don’t appreciate being told what to do.
My phone buzzes again, and my heart jumps, hoping it’s Mack. But it’s Tino.
“What’s up, D?” he asks, sounding way too casual. “I’ve had a couple of missed calls.”
“Where are you? We have a possible security breach.”
“Out for a run. What’s going on?”
I fill him in on what we know so far.
“Fuck,” he says. “I’ll come inside via the back entrance, see if I can find Kenzie and her mom.”
“Yes, good. Thanks. Bring them up to Nataniele’s quarters if you find them.”
“Will do.”
I remind myself that whatever is going on might have nothing to do with Mackenzie, but I’ll still feel better once I know she’s safe.
