“I’m sorry,” you tell the hitchhiker. “I’m not allowed to let anyone into the house without permission. Could you use another phone?”

“There is no other phone!” the hitchhiker yells. “I need to get inside! Let me in!”

“I’m sorry, but—”

“Let me in!” he hollers. “Please! If you don’t let me in, I’m going to die! And it will be on your conscience!”

Oh my.

Pushing away a surge of guilt, you close the door and lock it firmly.

He rings the doorbell again, pushing his finger against it so that it sounds like one continuous ring, but you’re not going to let him in.

Carson is the butler, and he can take care of this situation.

Besides, you’ve got to get to the kitchen.
