Chapter 68

“Oh my God!” you cry. “You’re a… a werewolf?”

You didn’t even know werewolves were real except in all those romance books. And you never quite understood why women were so attracted to werewolves. Although actually, right now, you do sort of get it.

Carson the werewolf stands there, breathing hard. Clearly, turning into a wolf took a lot out of him, which, you guess, makes sense. This hasn’t really answered any of your questions, though. It has, in fact, only created many new and more confusing questions.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,” he says in his gruff werewolf voice. “Most humans don’t understand.”

“I understand.” Well, sort of. Actually, not at all.

He seems able to walk on his two hind feet. He approaches you with a tender expression on his face. “I could tell from the moment I met you that you were a lover of animals. I thought if there was anyone who could understand, it would be you.”

He’s right. You do love animals. “What were you doing working as a butler, though?”

“I only got the job last week,” he explains.

“My little sister vanished, and I tracked her by scent to this estate. I came here to find and rescue her. Except when I found out what they were doing here, I decided to wait for a meeting of the Adventurous Eaters Club to take all those bastards down in one fell swoop.”

“Sorry if I got in the way of your plans,” you say.

“I’m just glad I was there to save you,” he says soberly. “I’ll go back later and take care of the rest of them.”

“Well…” You raise your eyes to meet his. Even though now he’s a wolf, he still has sexy gray eyes with long, sooty eyelashes. “I appreciate what you did for me. I really appreciate it.”

It’s true. Carson saved your life tonight, even though he could just as easily have taken his sister-wolf and left. He looked out for you. He’s a good man. Well, man-wolf.

Carson reaches for your hand. At his touch, a tingle goes through you that you haven’t experienced in a long time. And you can see in his eyes that he is thinking the same thing you are.
