Chapter Five #2

"I was securing something important," Cesare replied smoothly. He didn't let go of her hand. Instead, he stepped closer, his thumb gently tracing the line of her knuckles.

Over the last two years, their connection had grown from a tentative introduction by Kiara into a deep, unshakable bond.

Cesare knew Zorah wanted nothing to do with the violence of his world, and he respected that boundary.

He never brought his business into her presence.

He treated her mind as her greatest asset, spending hours listening to her explain complex virology concepts, simply because he loved the way her eyes lit up when she spoke about her passions. He revered her.

Cesare reached into the interior pocket of his tailored jacket. The room went silent. Kiara gasped, her hands flying to cover her mouth as she realized what her brother was doing.

"Zorah," Cesare began, his voice steady, devoid of the hesitation of a lesser man.

He looked deep into her eyes, laying his soul bare.

"You are the most brilliant, beautiful, and substantial woman I have ever known.

You brought light into a life I thought was consumed by shadows.

I do not want you to stand behind me. I want you to stand beside me, for the rest of my days. "

He opened a small velvet box, revealing a flawless, radiant-cut diamond that caught the evening sunlight.

"Will you marry me?" Cesare asked, his eyes filled with a fierce, unwavering devotion.

Zorah’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at the man standing in front of her. There was no shame here. There was no secrecy. There was a man who saw her exactly for who she was, and who was declaring his dedication in front of his family, in the light of day.

"Yes," Zorah whispered, a brilliant tear slipping down her cheek. "Yes, Cesare. I will."

Cesare exhaled a shaky breath of relief. He slipped the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a deep, powerful embrace, burying his face in her hair.

"Oh my god!" Kiara shrieked, launching herself across the room the second they parted. She collided with Zorah, wrapping her in a crushing hug. "You are going to be my real sister! I have a sister! Cesare, if you ever mess this up, I will literally dismantle you!"

"I am aware of that, Kiara," Cesare laughed, keeping his arm securely wrapped around Zorah’s waist, pulling her flush against his side.

Damon stepped forward, placing a firm, congratulatory hand on his brother-in-law's shoulder. "Congratulations, Cesare. Truly. And Zorah... welcome to the family."

Later that evening, after the champagne had been popped and the newly engaged couple was out on the terrace admiring the city skyline, Damon stood in the quiet of his private study. He was pouring two glasses of scotch when Kiara slipped through the double doors, leaning against the mahogany frame.

Damon walked over, handing her a glass and pulling her close by the waist. "Your brother looks like a dead man who just discovered how to breathe."

"She is good for him," Kiara said softly, watching the terrace through the glass doors. "She is so incredibly good, Damon. She deserves this happiness more than anyone in the world."

Damon took a slow sip of his scotch, his expression turning thoughtful, carrying the weight of the underworld he commanded.

"My European fixers sent a report this morning.

There is friction at the Marseille ports.

The Vellucci syndicate dismantled the French boss overnight.

Dario Vellucci has gone unhinged over the last twenty-four months. "

Kiara stiffened slightly in his arms. Her fierce, protective instincts instantly flared to life.

Damon noticed the shift. He looked down at his wife.

"You know something about this, Kiara. You told me a while ago that Zorah had a history in Europe, and you told me to stay out of it.

But watching Dario Vellucci tear the continent apart...

it isn't just business. It's the behavior of a man who lost his mind. What did they do to her?"

Kiara looked up at her husband, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, protective anger. She wasn't going to betray Zorah’s deepest, most painful secrets, but she needed her husband to understand the stakes.

"They destroyed her," Kiara said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "She was an innocent pawn, Damon. They framed her, they broke her heart, and they threw her to the wolves when she needed them the most. She was just a girl, and they treated her like garbage."

Damon’s jaw tightened. The pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. The Don of the Western Hemisphere looked out toward the terrace, watching Zorah laugh at something Cesare had said. She was brilliant. She was kind. And she had been butchered by the European syndicate.

A dark, resolve settled over Damon’s features. He pulled Kiara tighter against him, his voice echoing with uncompromising authority.

"The Vellucci family is dead to the West," Damon declared softly, making a vow that would shape the foundation of international underworld politics.

"If Dario Vellucci ever looks across the Atlantic...

if he ever tries to set foot in my city, or anywhere near my family, I will rain hellfire down on his empire.

She is under Kessler protection now. She is a Vitelli. And no one will ever touch her again."
