Chapter 88

The Royal Council Chamber hummed with quiet conversation as the kingdom's most powerful nobles filtered into the room.

Dukes, marquises, earls, ministers, and military commanders took their accustomed seats around the long oak table.

Maps of the kingdom lay unrolled beside ledgers, tax reports, mining records, and trade agreements. Every document represented another matter demanding the Crown's attention.

When the chamber doors opened, the conversations ceased almost instantly.

King Lucian entered.

Every noble rose.

"Your Majesty."

Lucian acknowledged them with a nod before taking his seat at the head of the table.

"Please."

Once everyone had resumed their seats, the Minister of Trade stood.

"Our first matter concerns the commercial agreement recently concluded between Emberforge and Hazelwood."

He unfolded a parchment, "A twenty-year trade accord, ratified by both duchies."

A ripple of interest passed through the chamber. Several nobles looked toward Duke Owen.

Duke Paul Indigo spoke first, "It is more than a trade agreement. It establishes shared investment in agriculture, manufacturing, medical supply, and transport."

Several ministers exchanged impressed glances.

The Minister of Finance adjusted his spectacles.

"If these figures are accurate...", He scanned the report again, "...both duchies are projected to increase revenue while reducing seasonal losses."

Paul nodded, "That is the intention."

Another duke folded his arms, "I've reviewed the proposal. What impressed me most wasn't the agreement itself......but how every clause benefits both sides. There isn't a single provision that leaves one duchy carrying the greater burden."

Owen smiled faintly, "Partnerships built upon imbalance rarely endure."

Several heads nodded.

The Minister of Agriculture leaned forward, "The irrigation initiative particularly caught my attention.

"And the agricultural workshops," another added.

Paul smiled, "Lady Aurora insisted that knowledge should travel alongside goods."

A murmur of approval spread through the chamber.

The Minister of Education chuckled softly, "That sounds remarkably like her."

One of the older dukes looked toward Owen.

"I've watched your daughter grow since she was a child. I must admit...I never expected her to become one of the kingdom's sharpest economic minds."

Owen's expression remained calm, "Neither did she."

A few quiet laughs circled the table.

Then...

Lord Cedric Hawthorne spoke. His voice was calm. Measured.

"Remarkable."

The room gradually quieted.

Cedric rested one hand upon the table, "Emberforge expands its mines. It builds schools. It opens medical centres. It secures foreign trade. It signs alliances."

He paused, "The kingdom benefits. No one disputes that."

Another pause, "But prosperity..."

He looked toward Owen, "...often brings influence."

The atmosphere subtly shifted.

Cedric continued in the same courteous tone, "I merely wonder......at what point does influence become power?"

Silence.

No accusation.

No raised voice.

Just a question.

Several nobles exchanged uneasy glances.

Paul Indigo's jaw tightened.

The Minister of Finance frowned thoughtfully.

Even Lucian watched Owen carefully.

Owen remained perfectly still.

Then...He slowly reached for his teacup. Took a sip. Set it back down.

"My lord." , His voice was calm, "I appreciate the concern."

Another brief silence.

"Allow me to ease it.", He leaned back comfortably, "My duchess already governs my household."

A few smiles appeared.

"My daughter governs my treasury."

More smiles.

"I spend most mornings negotiating with one......and every afternoon surrendering to the other."

Laughter spread around the table.

Owen sighed dramatically, "If I accepted a crown..."

He shook his head, "...I'd have an entire kingdom asking me for money."

He placed a hand over his heart, "I'm barely surviving the women I already answer to."

The chamber erupted with laughter.

Even Cedric's lips twitched despite himself.

When the laughter faded...

Owen's smile disappeared. He looked directly at Lucian, "My family has worn armour for the Crown longer than it has worn silk. My grandfather served your grandfather. My father served yours....I serve you."

He placed one hand over the Ambrose crest embroidered upon his coat.

"Our ambition has never been to wear a crown. It has always been to strengthen the kingdom that crown protects."

The chamber fell silent.

Lucian held Owen's gaze for several moments.

Then he spoke, "I have never doubted House Ambrose."

His voice carried effortlessly through the chamber, "Nor do I believe anyone seated here has reason to."

Cedric lowered his eyes.

Lucian continued, "The success of Emberforge should not be viewed with suspicion. It should be studied. He looked around the table. They invested in education. They invested in infrastructure. They invested in their people. And now the kingdom is witnessing the result."

The Minister of Agriculture was the first to speak.

"Hawthorne wishes to learn from Emberforge's irrigation methods."

Another noble immediately followed.

"Westhaven requests discussions regarding vocational schools."

The Minister of Health looked toward Owen.

"We would appreciate Lady Aurora's advice on establishing regional clinics."

Soon the requests began arriving from every side of the table.

"Mining equipment."

"Engineering workshops."

"Trade routes."

"Medical apprentices."

"Agricultural exchanges."

Owen looked from face to face before rubbing his temples with exaggerated exhaustion, "Oh dear..."

Paul laughed, "What now?"

Owen sighed, "I had hoped to enjoy a peaceful retirement someday."

He looked toward the ceiling, "My daughter appears determined to ensure that never happens."

The chamber burst into laughter once more.

Even Lucian smiled.

As the discussion resumed, his thoughts drifted briefly to Aurora.

She wasn't seated in the council chamber.

Yet somehow...

She had become the topic around which the entire meeting revolved.

Not through rank.

Not through title.

But through the ideas she had left behind.

For the first time in many years, the kingdom's greatest lords were no longer arguing over territory or privilege.

They were discussing how to build something together.

And Lucian couldn't help but wonder what Aurora would accomplish next.
