I led him down the aisle and out a side door to the indoor arena—a massive, vaulted structure that was still under construction in places, scaffolding and exposed framing along the far wall, but the floor was laid: a deep, professionally maintained surface of sand and fiber that would absorb impact and give under hoof.
The space was enormous. Two hundred feet long, at least. Enough room for what was about to happen.
I checked the girth one more time. Adjusted the stirrups—one hole shorter than standard, the way I'd always ridden, tight and close, the contact maximized.
Then I put my foot in the iron and swung up.
Valentine took that as permission to lose his mind.
The first buck came before my right boot found the stirrup—a hard, driving launch that sent his hindquarters skyward and his head between his knees, the kind of opening statement that would've put ninety percent of riders in the dirt before their ass made full contact with leather.
I wasn't ninety percent of riders.
I sat it. Deep in the saddle, legs clamped, core engaged, my weight dropped low the way my father had taught me in the corral a lifetime ago.
The second buck was worse—a spinning, twisting thing that tested my balance from three directions at once.
I felt my hips disconnect for a half-second, felt the familiar tilt toward the point of no return, and corrected with a shift so small it was invisible to anyone who wasn't a rider.
The third buck was theatrical. Valentine put everything into it—a full-body protest, hooves hammering the arena surface, his back arching like a bow being drawn. The sound was enormous in the enclosed space, the impact rattling through my spine, my teeth.
Then he ran.
Not a gallop—an explosion. A dead sprint across the arena floor that compressed the two hundred feet into about four seconds, the far wall approaching at a speed that would've concerned me if I hadn't felt the shift in his body a stride before the turn.
He planted, spun, and tore back the other way, and I moved with him—not against, not fighting, just riding, the way you rode a horse that needed to know you were serious before it would consent to partnership.
It went like that for the better part of an hour.
Sprints. Stops. Spins that tested my seatbones and his own agility. Crow-hops in the corners when he got bored of straight lines. One more genuine buck about twenty minutes in, to check if I was still paying attention. I was.
The construction workers had stopped to watch.
I could see them at the far end of the arena—hard hats pushed back, tools lowered, the faces of men who'd been building a wall and had suddenly found better entertainment.
A couple of them were leaning on the scaffolding with their arms crossed, the universal posture of men watching a show.
There was no carnage. There was never going to be carnage.
This wasn't a fight—it was a conversation.
The kind that happened between a horse who hadn't been ridden in too long and a man who hadn't ridden in too long, both of them working out the terms of an arrangement that would eventually become trust.
Valentine was testing me. Testing my balance, my reactions, my willingness to stay when staying was hard. And I was testing him—his responsiveness, his courage, his capacity to give when asked.
It was our love language. Written in sweat and dust and the grammar of a body on a body.
When both horse and rider were properly lathered—my shirt soaked through, his coat dark with sweat, both of us breathing hard in the dusty arena light—I pulled him to a walk. Let the reins go slack. Put my hand on his neck and felt the heat of him pulsing through my palm.
Valentine let out a long, shuddering exhale—a nay that started deep in his chest and came out as something between a sigh and a statement. The sound of an animal that had gotten exactly what it needed and was done pretending otherwise.
"Yeah, buddy," I said, low, just for the two of us. "I needed that, too."
The second I dismounted, the change was instantaneous.
Valentine, who'd spent the last hour trying to throw me through a wall, stood perfectly still.
Head lowered. Ears forward. His muzzle came to my shoulder and stayed there, warm and soft, his breathing already slowing to the rhythm of an animal at peace.
As compliant as a show dog at Westminster.
I was stripping the saddle when Ethan appeared. Leaning against the arena rail, arms crossed, that easy, unhurried presence that I'd come to associate with the man himself—steady, watchful, fundamentally calm.
"Good ride?" he asked.
"Fantastic," I said. And meant it in a way that went beyond the horse.
Ethan nodded. Let a beat pass. "Want to stay for dinner? With the family."
That was a first. The mornings at Dominion Hall had been Ethan and me—one-on-one, the careful courtship of a potential recruit by a man who understood that trust was built in private before it was tested in public. But dinner with the family meant the brothers. The inner circle.
My first instinct was to say no. The instinct of a man who'd been alone for so long that group settings felt like tactical environments rather than social ones, every interaction a potential vulnerability.
But then I thought about the horse under my hands. The gift of it. The trust it represented—not just Ethan's trust in me, but the organization's, the family's. A horse like this wasn't given lightly. A dinner invitation wasn't extended casually.
"Yeah," I said. "I'd like that."
"Good." Ethan pushed off the rail. "Chef's doing dinner on the patio tonight. Everyone's going to be grimy from work, so don't worry about a dress code."
I looked down at myself—sweat-soaked, dust-caked, smelling like horse and arena sand. "I should probably go back to the hotel and change."
"Or," Ethan said, "there's a shower and plenty of clothes you can borrow. Spare room, too, if you want to stay over."
I looked at him. At the offer underneath the offer—not just a shower and a change of clothes, but a place. A room in the house. A spot at the table that had my name on it, if I chose to sit down.
"Thanks," I said. "Let me think about it."
He nodded. Turned to leave.
"Ethan."
He stopped. Turned back.
I was going to ask him. The real thing. The thing I'd been circling since the picnic table—the question about how a man holds on to something without killing it. How you love someone when your version of love has teeth marks all over it.
The words were right there.
But when I opened my mouth, what came out was:
"Any chance I could borrow those clothes? I could use a shower."
Ethan studied me for a beat. Something moved behind his eyes—the quiet recognition of a man who'd heard the question that wasn't asked and was choosing to let it arrive on its own schedule.
"No problem," he said. "I'll have someone set it up. And the room's there if you want it tonight."
Then he walked away, his boots crunching on the gravel, his stride unhurried, a man who understood that some things couldn't be rushed and wasn't going to pretend otherwise.
I watched him go. Then I turned back to Valentine.
The horse was standing exactly where I'd left him—crossties loose, head low, eyes half-lidded in the post-ride calm that was the equine version of a man sitting in a hot tub after a hard day.
I picked up the hose, turned on the water, and started rinsing the sweat from his coat.
He leaned into the spray, shifting his weight with a contentment that was almost human.
"Valentine," I said, quietly, working the water along his neck. "Let me ask you something."
The horse flicked an ear toward my voice. Listening, or doing a convincing impression of it.
"When a man says the wrong thing to a woman—the absolute wrong thing, at the absolute wrong time, in the worst possible way—what does he do?"
Valentine turned his head and looked at me. Full on. Those dark, intelligent eyes, holding my gaze with the patient, unblinking directness of an animal that had just spent an hour testing me and had decided I was worth its time.
He didn't answer. Obviously. He was a horse.
But the look on his face—the quality of equine judgment, thousand pounds of opinion delivered without a single word—said everything I needed to hear.
Figure it out, stupid. You're a man, aren't you?
I turned off the hose. Stood there in the stable with the water dripping and the late afternoon light coming through the high windows and the horse beside me, warm and real and mine in a way that nothing had been mine in a very long time.
Yeah. I was a man.
Time to start acting like one.
