Chapter 31 Come Back #3

His fingers found me through the thin fabric still between us. The first firm stroke made my head fall back.

He watched every reaction. Not to catalogue it for future use. To remain present for the answer happening now.

“Again,” I said.

He did it again, then changed the angle when my hips moved. Pleasure gathered with humiliating speed. I held his shoulder, felt muscle shift beneath my palm, and understood that asking did not diminish the force of what he could give me. It made the force mine to invite.

I came with his name against my teeth and his other hand braced at my back.

He held me until I could breathe without shaking.

“Still yes?” he asked.

“Yes.” I kissed him once. “Condom?”

“I have one in my wallet.”

“Of course you do.”

“I hoped. I did not plan around it.”

The distinction made me laugh against his mouth.

He reached for his trousers only after I moved off him.

When he returned, I took the packet from his hand and opened it myself.

Gideon watched me roll it over him, his jaw tight and his palms flat on the mattress as if the permission to wait demanded more strength than any acquisition he had ever completed.

I settled over him, but stopped before taking him inside me.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“You choosing me.”

“That is already happening.”

“Then I want to feel it.”

I lowered myself slowly. The stretch pulled a broken breath from both of us. His hands closed around my hips, then loosened at once.

“Keep them there,” I said.

His grip returned.

For the first few movements, I controlled everything. Pace. Depth. The angle that made his eyes close and mine remain open. I wanted the evidence of his restraint beneath me. I wanted to know I could hold all that power still with one word and release it with another.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“I am not giving you the future because I gave you tonight.”

His gaze sharpened. “Tonight is tonight. Tomorrow we ask again.”

“Yes.”

I leaned down and kissed him. “Now take over.”

He did not ask me to soften the instruction.

Gideon turned us with one controlled movement and covered my body with his. The change was immediate. He drove into me with the decisive rhythm I had missed, then hated myself for missing, then finally learned I could want without surrendering the rest of my life to it.

My legs wrapped around him. His mouth found the place below my ear that memory had preserved accurately. When I told him harder, he gave me harder. When I pulled his head back and demanded his eyes, he gave me those too.

Control became beautiful only after it belonged inside a boundary we built together.

“No rescue,” I whispered.

“No rescue.”

“No ownership.”

“No ownership.”

“Stay.”

His composure broke.

He moved with the certainty I had always wanted from him and the humility I had required him to learn.

The bed struck the wall once. Neither of us apologized.

Pleasure built without erasing the argument, the risk, or the structures waiting downstairs.

I did not need love to make us innocent. I needed it to make honesty survivable.

The second climax took me without warning. I held him through it, nails against his back, and felt him follow with my name rough against my throat.

For several breaths he remained above me, careful not to collapse his weight onto mine.

“May I stay here?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He lowered himself and let me hold him.

Afterward, Gideon disposed of the condom, returned with water and a warm cloth, and waited for permission before touching me again. When he lay beside me, one hand remained open on the sheet between us.

I placed mine in it.

The key remained on the entry table.

We lay beneath the quilt while traffic moved through Bank Street below.

The apartment had heard every version of us.

Young lovers arguing in the kitchen. My parents lowering their voices after midnight.

Ten years of my footsteps alone above the atelier.

Tonight it held no promise that history had been repaired beyond use.

It held two people willing to live where the repairs remained visible.

Gideon traced one finger over my palm.

“Maeve cannot be told yet,” I said.

“Rachel gave you the same boundary?”

“Yes.”

“She gave it to me before Vermont.”

“Did you think I might come back?”

“I hoped. I did not plan around it.”

The distinction was becoming the language of our future.

“We tell Rachel tomorrow that the adult conversation happened,” I said. “Then we decide together what Maeve hears and when.”

“Yes.”

“No surprise family breakfast.”

“No school pickup.”

“No ring hidden in a pastry.”

His eyes moved to mine. “That is unusually specific.”

“I have met billionaires.”

The new key still waited on the entry table.

“Where does it belong?” he asked.

“Tomorrow, you can put it on your key ring.”

“And tonight?”

“Tonight, it stays where we can both see that you were invited.”

He kissed my knuckles.

“I will come back only through doors you open.”

I looked at the man who had once believed love was proven by removing every barrier before I could encounter it.

“Good,” I said. “Because I plan to open more than one.”
