New Mission

One month later…

Stepping into Flynn’s room, I look to where he lays in his bed, hooked up to monitors. His health has declined rapidly over the last month, and no one has a clue why. Ever since the day we tortured and killed Zayn, he hasn’t been the same.

We’ve had additional guards coming in and out of the castle, but something in my gut is telling me things aren’t what they seem to be.

Me and Kane have been looking over his medical records and can’t figure out how a certain poison keeps coming up in his blood tests.

We refuse to tell him what it is because we know if we do, the outcome could be catastrophic.

So, until we figure out how to help him and stop this poison from riddling his body, we will continue to keep him in the dark.

Walking over to the side of his bed, I sit in the chair next to him like I’ve been doing for the last four weeks.

“You wanted to see me?” I ask, and he smiles.

“I know you hate it here, but this mess is almost over,” he rasps, and I nod.

“Jade and Spade will fly in this evening. There’s a council meeting tonight that Jade will attend as the head of the family.

I’m granting you time with Spade before I ship you out,” he tells me, and a smile spreads across my face.

“Thank you, I appreciate that,” I tell him, but he lifts his hand.

“I’m sending you home but not as Dario Roselli,” he says, and I raise a brow, causing him to laugh.

“They are looking for a new guard, someone to protect my daughter and grandchildren. Who is better than you? The dead husband and father, then some strange arsehole,” he says as my eyes widen.

“I get to go home? But not as me? You want me to be someone else?” I ask, and he nods, coughing as he tries to sit up.

“That is correct. Your new identity is Zayn Cruz, the asshole we killed. No one will think anything of it. I have your resume and history set in place. Kane will give you the file, and you’re on the first jet out of here by midnight,” he says, and I laugh.

“So, I’m still a dead guy?” I say, and he laughs, coughing as he does.

“Yes, you have a time limit there. She needs to be strong, Dario. I need her to be ready to handle everything and anything that comes her way. I apologize for putting you in the middle of this, but it needed to happen,” he tells me as I sit back in my seat and cross my arms.

“Why me? Why not Spade or Jameson?” I ask, and he snarls at the mention of Jameson.

“You’re the leader. You’re the strongest of them all.

I’m not knocking them for who they are even if I despise the Callaghan boy, but you are the glue that makes them whole.

The one who keeps them in line. Spade would’ve blown his cover.

He couldn’t handle this type of job,” he confesses, and I nod.

He’s right. My brothers couldn’t ever do this.

Some days, I don’t think I will survive, but today, I’m still standing.

“Alright. I’ll go. Even if it kills me to be so close but yet so fucking far away,” I say, and he nods.

“Remember, it’s only temporary,” he tells me, and I take a deep breath. “Alright, son. Go pack. I’ll have Kane tell you when they arrive,” he says as I get up from my seat.

“I’ll see you soon, Flynn,” I tell him, and he smiles as I walk out of his room and down the hall to mine.

Hours later, my bedroom door swings open as Kane steps in with Spade. Getting up from the couch, I round the coffee table as Spade crashes into me, wrapping his arms around me tightly.

“Fuck, it’s so good to see you, brother,” I tell him, squeezing him back. Kane shuts the door behind him after giving me a nod as Spade pulls away, pressing his forehead against mine.

“Shit, Ri. I fucking missed you, but Jesus, you look so different,” he whispers, as we both sob together for a moment.

“I know, Reid, I know. But guess what?” I say as he pulls away, wiping his tears.

“You came out of the closet and let Kane get all up in that?” he laughs, and I roll my eyes.

“You fucking wish.” I laugh, punching him in the arm. “Oh, I almost forgot,” I say, slapping him in the nuts as he falls to his knees, cupping himself.

“What the fuck was that for?” he yells as I stand there laughing at him.

“That was for sending me that video. You know the one. You prick,” I growl, and he laughs hysterically as he tries to get back to his feet.

“It’s great spank bank material,” he says, wiggling his brows, and I shake my head.

“Oh, I know. It’s perfect,” I tell him. “But anyway, I’m coming home. I’ll be your new guard, so don’t be shocked when you see me in the house when you get back,” I inform him, and he whoops, throwing his fists into the air.

“Fuck yes. This will be interesting as fuck,” he says, but I just shake my head.

“It’s seriously so good to fucking see you. Where’s my wife?” I ask him, and he takes a deep breath, sitting on the couch.

“Council chambers. Getting ready to meet the circle,” he says, and I nod.

“Ri, when I couldn’t find you, I legit lost my fucking mind. I was so fucking worried and angry. It was so fucking hard not to tell the others, but fuck man. You scared the shit out of me,” he says, his tone serious.

“I know. When I woke up, not knowing where the fuck I was or how long I had been gone for scared me too. This shit was not a part of the plan. I was supposed to go missing, not get fucking blown up,” I growl.

“We should’ve known better. Nothing we plan ever goes right. It’s always been like that. We still don’t know how anyone got to your truck. The cameras come up empty. It’s like a fucking ghost did it,” he says, and I sigh.

“We will never have the fucking answers. Is the house safe though? Did Jameson add more layers to the system?” I ask, and he nods. Digging into his pocket, he takes out a phone and hands it to me. I raise a brow, and he smirks.

“Been keeping it safe for you, and I’ve even loaded it up with a ton of pictures of the kids,” he says, and I smile wide.

“Thank you. You’ve given me a lifeline. I appreciate it, brother,” I say, and he nods.

“But to answer your question. Yes, we have more manpower and a better system,” he informs me. As I sit back on the couch, the door opens and Kane enters my room.

“It’s almost time for Spade to go. He’s a part of the council. Surprise,” he says as Spade’s brows hit the top of his head.

“I what now?” he says as me and Kane laugh.

“Welcome to the family, brother. We are all a part of the council. Gio is standing in my place because Carmine will never have my seat,” I tell him while he sits there with his jaw on the floor.

“What the fuck?” he says, looking at Kane. “When were you going to tell me, you big bitch?”

“Now,” he laughs, and I just shake my head.

“Awee, come on, Lad. Being a part of the council is fun. What’s even better is that your wife is now your boss. Sucks to be you,” Kane tells him, and I laugh.

“She’s always been the boss. What are you new here?

” he asks, shaking his head. God, it's so good to be around him again. I’ve fucking missed the banter.

I just wish Jameson was here to yell at him, but most of all I wish my girl was sitting in my lap, so I could whisper all the dirty things I want to do to her.

A lonely man can wish, right?
