Chapter 19

Garda training wasn’t at all like Chloe Parker had expected. She wondered if she’d joined just to annoy her mother. Possibly. But what she liked – loved, even – was the seminars where they reviewed old cases, and of course cold cases.

She’d heard about the murder of that poor family in Ragmullin and it caused a spark to ignite within her. One of the old cases she’d studied had fascinated her. And now she thought it bore some resemblance to what was being reported on the news about this current crime.

She’d love to have a look at the crime scene. Would Boyd send her photos? Probably not. He’d got in enough trouble with her mother for helping her with her Garda application without Lottie knowing. That was the most likely cause of their break-up.

She powered up her college laptop. Flicking through the index of files, she tried to find the one that had intrigued her. A case from twenty years ago.

There it was. A flutter of anticipation surged through her chest. She went to unwind her ponytail and then remembered she’d had her hair cut before entering Templemore.

She opened the file and began to read.
