Rosalie’s Diary - 10 February 1907

Rosalie’s Diary

With the new year, a new diary. I will do my best to write in it every day and practice my French. When the Bandman Opera

Company came, I went to audition because to sing opera is my dream. One aria, I begged, just let me perform one aria. But

I couldn’t even get in to see their music director. I’ve auditioned for all the bands at all the big hotels and nightclubs,

but they don’t want a girl like me. They want American singers for popular dance music.

So today, at last, I have a job singing at the Golden Rooster, which is not a five-star nightclub, or even a three-star. But

my money’s running out and I must pay the rent on this room or share with other girls and I would hate that. Always worrying

about them stealing my things, borrowing without asking, gossip and meanness. I know it too well.

Father worries but what can he do? My voice could be my fortune but my face will never allow that fortune to materialize.

But enough melancholy, it’s a new year and I will be onstage in a few hours.
