Rosalie’s Diary
There is one good thing about the Golden Rooster. I had heard that the owner, Mr. Huang, doesn’t touch the girls and it turns
out to be true because he likes boys. I’ve asked Huang to let me sing some arias during intermissions, when the band is taking
a break, and he said he would think about it.
It’s not La Scala but at least I’m singing. It’s not what I hoped for, but I’ve realized what a naive dream that was. There
is not an opera house that would ever take me, even in the chorus. In China, no amateur musical society would ever have me.
And now I’m a nightclub singer, and in people’s eyes, only one step up from a prostitute. I would have to move to another
city and find another career to be rid of this taint.
