Rosalie’s Diary

Huang regrets hiring me, he says. He let me sing some opera pieces when the band took a break. Some uncouth clients howled

their displeasure and exited the club, losing the club money from more hours of drinking. He handed me a stack of Golden Rooster

business cards and told me to bring in some new business or else I’m fired.

When Father came to see me, I told him. He could’ve said “I told you so” and many more cruel things but he didn’t. I gave

him some Golden Rooster business cards and asked him to distribute them at every opportunity. I don’t hope for much. What

comes next? Domestic service for some foreign family, I suppose. My languages put to use at last. Perhaps I can look after

children and teach them songs, how to play the piano a little.
