Rosalie’s Diary
A young American came to the club. He asked me to his table after I finished my set. He had one of those business cards with
him and showed me. “Someone gave me this,” he said, “and I thought I might as well give this place a try. And I’m very glad
I did.”
He gave me one of his cards. Charles Burnett. He is handsome, kind, and cheerful. But most of all, he is rich. Huang is beside
himself—never has a client of such quality entered his club before, so my immediate future is assured. Perhaps beyond immediate
since Mr. Burnett has promised to bring all his friends to the Golden Rooster.
Most unexpectedly, after I told Charles that I’d had operatic training, he requested that I sing him an aria, and applauded
loudly after. Huang was not pleased but what could he do?
