Francis Xavier. Madame Taddeo and her husband were there—she was my matron of honor. A few of Charles’s closest friends attended.

His British friend Will Reiss was best man.

Now Mr. Burnett is back and he’s furious with Charles. I stood outside the library door and listened. He had wanted Charles

to marry the daughter of another American, a lawyer. He says that until Charles annuls the marriage, he is no son to him.

I’m sad to have caused such a rift between father and son. At the same time, I’m happier than I’ve ever been. Charles loves

me enough to defy his father and ignore his friends. I’m not his mistress, I’m his wife. His wife.
