CHAPTER 16

EMMY

Romcom Book

Have you ever done something you’ve simultaneously enjoyed and deeply questioned? *Asking for a friend.*

Gold Dog

Is this *friend* returning to the dating scene?

Possibly. Okay, yes. It’s me! I’m that friend!

I thought you were embracing your fall fling?

The fall fling is good. Mind-bogglingly so. But I did something that might have made things awkward.

You’re second-guessing yourself now?

I don’t know, am I?

Clearly, you are. Unless . . . uh-oh.

What?

You’ve fallen for him, haven’t you?

Maybe?! But I can’t go into detail because I’ll give too much away.

The PISR again! What’s the worst that could happen?

I drive him away and become the poster child for how to ruin your life?

One mistake rarely ruins a life. Some are even happy accidents.

Do you know what it’s like to disappoint people?

Yeah, I do. But I once saw a sign that said, “You can’t make everyone happy. You’re not a taco.”

But what if I want to be a taco?

You can’t. But if you like this guy, go for it. Shoot for the moon. It’s your life.

I don’t know if I can without knowing that he feels the same. Is that weird?

Not weird at all. But what would he have to do to show you?

I appreciate guys who take the time to really get to know someone—their likes, dislikes, the little details that matter. They care enough to remember the small things, and they do them simply because it makes the other person happy.

Give me an example of what would make you happy.

Is it too much to want someone to watch reruns of Gilmore Girls with? To make me soup when I’m sick or buy York Peppermint Patties when I’m down?

Not at all. It’s sweet, actually. You can never be sad when you eat minty chocolate.

Exactly! If we keep dating, he’ll find out that I love when he twines his fingers through mine, and I absolutely melt when he leaves a line of kisses along my collarbone, gathering like tiny butterflies.

Then you should tell him. Men aren’t mind-readers.

I know, but why can’t they be?

We’re humans, not superheroes. By the way, I have news too. I’ve started dating someone.

What? Why didn’t you tell me before???

You had something important to say.

So it’s official?

We kissed, so . . .

Um, yes! Time for me to break out my dating advice playbook.

I hope we can stay friends? This won’t make things weird?

Not at all. Who better to share dating war stories with than a friend? Can't wait to hear all about it!
