Chapter 10 The Breakup
When I returned to the company to resign, the manager kept trying to hold me back.
"You have always done a good job here. You are about to get promoted. Why resign suddenly?"
Seeing that I insisted, she sighed and approved my resignation anyway.
I had thought it over.
Actually, I was not very suited for this job.
Although the pay was high and it looked prestigious, the daily commute took over two hours, and there was overtime.
These years I had been exhausted from the constant rush. It was too tiring.
Back home, I would earn less.
But I would not need to rent a place, and living costs were lower.
Overall, I would definitely be more comfortable.
Next was breaking up with Chen Yanzhou.
I had not expected the reason for the breakup to come so quickly.
When I got home, I ran into Feng Linlin coming out of the house.
She wore a black YSL wool coat, sheer black stockings, and CL red-bottom heels.
Her eyes were red as she tugged at Chen Yanzhou's arm, speaking with agitation.
"Chen Yanzhou, you dare say you do not like me!"
"Back then you told me yourself that you did not like Tang Ning at all."
"You were only with her because I was not around. You were just moved by how good she was to you!"
"You also said you liked me. Now that I am back, why are you getting back together with her?!"
Chen Yanzhou said something impatiently.
Feng Linlin cried with tears streaming down her face. She tiptoed up to kiss him.
At that moment, Chen Yanzhou suddenly spotted me.
He widened his eyes and stepped back instinctively, pushing Feng Linlin away.
He rushed to explain to me, "Tang Ning, it is not what you think!"
Feng Linlin glanced at me.
The corner of her mouth suddenly curved into a provocative smile.
"Chen Yanzhou, you dare say you never told me you liked me?!"
"You dare say you never said you did not like her at all?"
"She is ordinary from head to toe, not your type at all."
"If she had not clung to you desperately, you would not have looked at her once."
"You dare say you have not been waiting for me all these years?!"
Chen Yanzhou roared, "Shut up!"
"I am not with you now, and I will not be with you in the future either."
"I will not break up with Tang Ning. You leave."
"I will not invest in your dad's company."
Feng Linlin's eyes reddened. She bit her lip.
"Chen Yanzhou, you bastard!"
Then as she passed me, she bumped me hard and left.
Chen Yanzhou did not even glance at her.
He strode over and gripped my shoulders.
"Tang Ning, listen to me. It is not what you saw."
"There is really nothing between us. She came today only because her dad's company ran into trouble and wanted me to inject capital into it."
I lowered my head. "Those words..."
Chen Yanzhou paused.
"Those words were indeed what I said, but that was all before."
"I do not think that way anymore."
"I just want to be with you properly."
"There is really nothing between me and Feng Linlin. Please do not get angry!"
"I am not angry," I said softly.
"Do not say things out of anger. I can explain everything."
Chen Yanzhou looked a bit helpless.
"I did not say anything out of anger."
I really was not angry.
If it had been before, I probably would have been hurt and angry.
But now I truly felt nothing at all.
If anything, I even felt relieved at finally being free.
I was thankful he gave me a reason to break up.
I looked up and stared at Chen Yanzhou.
"Chen Yanzhou, let us break up."
"I already told you there is nothing between us—"
"I am not angry because of her. I am serious."
"This time I came back to resign and to break up with you."
"But we got back together, did not we?" Chen Yanzhou raised his voice.
"Tang Ning, I have already changed the things you mentioned before."
"Have I not been doing well enough lately? Why do you still want to break up?!"
"I do not know," I smiled bitterly.
"I really do not know."
Chen Yanzhou actually trying to keep me was something I never dared imagine before.
Even the last time we broke up, if he had done this, I probably would have stayed devoted.
But feelings could really wear out completely.
Liking him was something I had persisted with for so many years.
But not liking him happened in just an instant.
I really had no feelings for him anymore.
"Sorry," I said to Chen Yanzhou.
"I will move my things out today."
"In the future... I wish you happiness."
