Marin

The shower is the only place I don’t listen for Charles.

For seven minutes, I am just a woman standing under water that’s never quite hot enough, letting everything else disappear.

No moaning. No double-checking restraints.

No emails from clients who’ve already replaced me.

Just steam and abhorrent water pressure and the brief, merciful illusion that I am someone who has her life together.

I turn the water off and feel it immediately. Something is off.

I wrap the towel around myself. Open the bathroom door. Steam follows me into the hallway like it’s trying to warn me.

The second bedroom door is open.

I left it closed.

My whole body goes cold in a way the shower should have prevented.

I walk down the hallway, wet footprints on the hardwood, hair dripping down my back, and I know before I reach the doorway.

I know the way you know when a deal has gone sideways—not from what anyone says, but from the specific quality of silence in the room where they’re not saying it.

Luke moves into in the doorway. Arms at his sides. Still. He’s looking at Charles the way I imagine he used to look at scans—clinical. Thorough. Every detail logged and filed before the patient even knows they’ve been read.

He doesn’t turn around when he hears me. He already knows I’m here.

“I can explain,” I say.

The words come out before I can choose better ones. Rookie move. I sound like every client I’ve ever coached through a PR disaster—the ones who lead with I can explain and then can’t.

He turns. Slowly. And looks at me.

I have been looked at by powerful men in boardrooms. I have been looked at by Charles across dinner tables when he was deciding whether to love me or leave me. I have been looked at by HR directors delivering termination speeches with the compassion of a parking meter.

None of them looked at me like this.

Luke’s face is completely still. No anger. No shock. No disgust. Just—observation. Like he’s waiting to see what I’ll do next before he decides what he’s going to do. And that patience, that absolute, terrifying calm, is worse than anything he could say.

“His name is Charles,” I say. “He’s my boyfriend.”

Luke says nothing.

“He has a condition.” I pull the towel tighter. Stand straighter. Commit. “A psychological condition. Episodes. He gets violent—with himself, mostly. Dissociative. The doctors recommended a controlled environment. Somewhere quiet, away from triggers. I’m managing it.”

My voice is steady. My face is steady. This is a good lie. This is a lie I could sell to a jury, a therapist, a concerned neighbor with bionic hearing. I’ve pitched worse with less preparation.

Luke looks at me for a long time. Then he looks back into the room. At Charles—strapped to the bed, bruised, barely conscious, wrists raw.

“So you tied him to the bed,” Luke says. Not a question.

“It’s a management strategy. It’s not—it’s not what it looks like.”

He cocks his head. “What does it look like?”

The question is so quiet it barely reaches me. But it lands like a blade.

I open my mouth. Close it. Open it again.

“It looks worse than it is,” I say. “I know how it looks. But Charles and I have an arrangement. He consented to this. He needs structure. He needs someone to—to hold the line when he can’t hold it himself.”

“Marin.”

“I know it seems extreme—”

He raises his voice. “Marin.”

He says my name like he’s setting something down. Something heavy. Something he’s been carrying across the hallway and has decided to place between us.

“That man,” he says, “did not ask you to do this.”

The air leaves the hallway. Or maybe it leaves me. Same thing.

“You don’t know him,” I say. “You don’t know what he’s like. What he does. How he—”

“I don’t need to know him.” Luke steps out of the doorway.

Toward me. Not threatening. Not gentle. Just—close.

Close enough that I can smell the sawdust on his shirt and something underneath it—warm, clean, male.

The kind of scent that has no business registering right now and does anyway.

“I know what a man looks like when he’s been put somewhere he didn’t choose.

And I know what a woman looks like when she’s rehearsed her story so many times she almost believes it. ”

Almost.

That word cracks something.

Not all the way. I’m not there yet. If he only knew how little I’d actually rehearsed any of this.

Still, I don’t crumble and I don’t confess and I don’t fall to my knees in a wet towel in the hallway of a house I shouldn’t have bought.

But something shifts. Some wall I didn’t know I was leaning on moves half an inch, and for the first time since I loaded Charles into that trailer, I feel the full weight of what I’m holding up.

“He cheated on me,” I say. Quietly. Not a pitch.

Not a performance. Just the thing underneath all the other things.

The truth. It just spills out like maybe I just needed to say it and the man standing in front of me is the unlucky one who happens to be there to hear it.

“He cheated and he left and he said I wasn’t enough.

And I couldn’t—I couldn’t just let him go. I couldn’t be the woman who gets left.”

Luke stands there. Doesn’t move. Doesn’t react.

The hallway is silent. Charles is silent. The house is silent.

“So what now?” I say.

He looks at me. Then he looks back through the doorway at Charles. Then back at me.

“Get dressed,” he says. “Then we’ll figure it out.”

He walks downstairs. I hear his boots on the kitchen floor. The coffeepot being lifted. A mug pulled from the cabinet—the LIVE LAUGH LOVE mug, probably, because the universe has a sick sense of humor.

I stand in the hallway, dripping, holding a towel around a body that suddenly feels like it belongs to someone else.

He hasn’t called the police.

He hasn’t left.

I don’t know what that means yet.

But I know it means something.
