Chapter 3 The Morning After
I slept on the small couch in the outer room.
The next morning, noise from the inner room woke me.
I rubbed my sleepy eyes, walked to the doorway, and saw Pei Zhao checking his own clothes.
He even lifted the quilt and searched the bedsheet.
I did not know what he was looking for.
I wanted to call him but could not think of the right way to address him.
Finally I gritted my teeth and called, "Husband."
"What are you looking for?"
I explained, "I took off your clothes yesterday, but I did nothing else. I was only afraid you would sleep uncomfortably."
He froze for a moment.
Then he dressed haphazardly.
He picked up the shoes by the bed in a daze and tried to put them on.
Suddenly he remembered something and asked in surprise, "You took off my shoes and socks too?"
I nodded.
He frowned, stood up, and walked toward me.
He circled me with obvious curiosity and confusion. "Are you Xue Chan?"
"Yes, it is me."
He looked me up and down and muttered, "Have you changed?"
Then he put on a straight face again. "Did aunt tell you?"
"We are only in a fake marriage. It is just for show."
I nodded like a little chick pecking at rice. "She did."
"I know."
Seeing me so obedient, he seemed uncomfortable.
He rubbed the back of his neck. "Good that you know."
He made to leave.
I quickly stopped him. "Wait!"
I ran to the wardrobe, took out a cloak, and held it out to him. "Put this on before you go out. Spring has just begun. Do not catch a cold."
He ignored me at first.
After walking a few steps, he came back.
He coughed lightly. "About your father, do not worry too much. My father has already sent money and people to handle it. Nothing will happen."
Before I could thank him, he took the cloak from my hands and strode away.
I stood there alone like a fool.
A maid came to urge me. "Young Madam, it is time to greet Madam Pei."
