Chapter 7

I waited for Pei Zhao for a long time.

In the end, I could no longer hold on and fell asleep with my head on the table.

I slept so soundly.

Forgetting I was not in bed, I subconsciously rolled over and nearly fell to the floor.

A pair of warm and strong hands caught my head.

I jumped in fright and woke up abruptly.

Pei Zhao had returned at some point.

He was now sitting beside me, eating.

He handed me a handkerchief and pointed at the corner of my mouth.

I lowered my head in a panic and wiped randomly.

He asked, "So sleepy, why didn't you sleep on the bed?"

"I was waiting for you."

"I thought when you came back, I would heat the food again. In this weather, it's better not to eat cold dishes."

"But I fell asleep while waiting."

"I'm sorry."

His expression turned a little unnatural. He lowered his head and kept eating. "You don't have to please me like this."

I said seriously, "I'm not pleasing you."

"We are husband and wife now. Even if it's fake, we still have to make it look real. It's only right for a wife to be good to her husband."

He stared at me for a long time. "You've really become a different person."

"Forget it. Do whatever you want."

"As long as you're happy."

I got up and went to prepare the water for Pei Zhao's bath.

Once the water was ready, I had the maid invite him over.

Pei Zhao stood behind the screen, lowering his head to untie his belt.

I walked out halfway, then turned back.

I reached out quite naturally to help him.

He froze.

His breathing stopped for a moment.

In an awkward voice, he said softly, "Xue Chan, you don't have to go this far."

I didn't hear clearly. My hands were still busy at his waist. I looked up in confusion and asked, "What?"

Pei Zhao lowered his head. Our eyes met.

Our breaths were so close.

I finally felt the shame hit me. I quickly pulled my hands back and hid them behind me, avoiding his gaze.

He bent down slightly and whispered beside my ear, "If you act like this, I'll misunderstand."

I whispered. "Misunderstand what?"

"Misunderstand—" He dragged out the tone. "That you want to be my real wife."

I bit my lip and gave no answer.

Pei Zhao stopped teasing me. He took a step back and put distance between us.

"By the way."

"Sleep on the bed tonight."

I looked up in surprise.

I thought he meant to sleep together.

But the next moment.

He reached out and flicked my forehead. "What are you thinking?"

"I mean, I'll sleep on the small couch outside."

I answered in a low voice, "Oh."

He smiled teasingly. "What? Are you disappointed?"

My face flushed red as I retorted, "Of course not!"

I pushed him. "Go wash quickly. The water will get cold soon."

Then I ran away as if escaping.
