"Step back," Sebastian said.

Trevor did not move.

Dorothy did.

She walked toward him before anyone could stop her, not close enough to touch him, but close enough that he had to see her instead of Vanessa.

"Step back," she said.

Trevor's breath came hard.

Vanessa whispered, "Dorothy, he scared me."

Dorothy did not even look at her.

"Do not," she said.

The word silenced Vanessa more effectively than shouting would have.

Trevor lowered his hand slowly.

Then the other.

He stepped back.

The distance between him and Vanessa opened again, and with it came the full horror of how close he had come.

Marcus exhaled sharply.

Hale's face was like stone. "Trevor, you have just jeopardized several legal proceedings in one hallway."

"I know," Trevor said.

The words were hoarse.

Dorothy looked at him. "No, you don't. Not yet."

His eyes found hers.

She was shaking. He saw it now. Not from fear of him, perhaps not only that, but from the unbearable fact that after everything Vanessa had done to her, Dorothy had been forced to run across the city to keep Trevor's guilt from becoming another catastrophe.

That realization landed harder than any accusation.

Dorothy's voice trembled, but did not break. "My pain does not give you permission to become reckless."

Trevor closed his eyes.

"Your guilt does not give you the right to turn into someone I have to stop."

He opened them.

The sentence hit the exact place she aimed.

Vanessa's mouth tightened faintly.

Dorothy still did not look at her. "I asked you to come back with truth."

"I know."

"No. Listen to me." Dorothy stepped closer. "If you hurt her, if you threaten her, if you let her make you violent, then everything becomes about what you did in this hallway instead of what she did to me in that hospital. Do you understand that?"

His throat moved.

"Yes."

"Do you?" she demanded, and for the first time her voice rose. "Because I am tired of men doing damage in my name and calling it love, guilt, protection, rage, whatever word makes it easier to survive themselves afterward."

Sebastian looked down.

The words reached him too.

Trevor's face had gone gray.

Dorothy continued, softer now, which made it worse. "You do not get to use what happened to me as a reason to lose control. I lost enough that night. Do not make me lose the case too."

Trevor looked at her as if she had reached inside his chest and closed her hand around the part of him still burning.

Then he nodded once.

Not enough to repair the moment.

Enough to step away from the edge.

"I am sorry," he said.

Dorothy looked exhausted by the apology.

"I do not need sorry right now," she said. "I need you to stand behind counsel and let the truth matter more than your rage."

Trevor stepped back another pace.

Then another.

He moved behind Marcus.

Not because Marcus could restrain him physically if he chose otherwise, but because the movement itself was submission to the boundary Dorothy had drawn.

Sebastian watched it, silent.

Hale stepped forward at once, taking control before the hallway could become another trap. "Miss Werner, this conversation is over unless your attorney is present."

Vanessa's eyes widened. "He came to my apartment and threatened me."

"You sent illegal blackmail material involving a miscarriage, medical privacy violations, and potential surveillance of a patient in distress," Hale said coldly. "Do not test which part of this hallway becomes the headline after full context is provided."

Vanessa's face flickered.

For one second, the fear returned.

Then she looked at Dorothy.

"You came for him," Vanessa said.

Dorothy's expression did not change. "I came for myself."

Vanessa laughed softly. "Of course you did."

Sebastian stepped forward, his voice quiet enough to be dangerous. "You should go inside and call your lawyer."

Vanessa's gaze moved over him. "Still standing beside her after Redvale?"

"Yes," Sebastian said.

The answer was immediate.

Dorothy's chest tightened.

Trevor heard it too and looked away, jaw clenched, but he remained silent.

Vanessa saw all of it. The restraint. The pain. The shifting alliances she kept trying to fracture. Her eyes sharpened again.

"You are all very noble today," she said. "How beautiful."

Hale held out his hand. "Your phone."

Vanessa blinked. "Excuse me?"

"You received and transmitted a video tied to an ongoing privacy and extortion matter. Preserve the device. Hand it over voluntarily, or we seek emergency seizure."

Vanessa's hand tightened at her side.

There.

Dorothy saw it.

The phone.

Hale saw it too.

So did Sebastian.

Vanessa smiled, slow and thin. "I do not consent to a search."

"No one asked you to," Hale said. "We are preserving your refusal."

Marcus had already taken out his phone, documenting the exchange openly. Elise's voice came through his speaker, low and sharp, instructing him to capture time and location.

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward Marcus's recording.

Then, almost imperceptibly, her thumb moved against the phone hidden in her palm.

Dorothy noticed, but not enough to understand.

Trevor noticed too late.

"Vanessa," he said.

She looked at him.

There was something in her expression now that made the skin along Dorothy's arms go cold.

Not fear.

Success.

"Do not say my name like that," Vanessa whispered. "Not after what you just did."

Trevor's eyes narrowed.

Hale said, "We are leaving."

"No," Vanessa said suddenly, voice sharpening. "Let him speak. Let Trevor tell me what he came here to say."

Marcus stiffened.

Sebastian's gaze dropped to her hand.

Trevor took one step forward.

Dorothy said, "Trevor."

He stopped.

But Vanessa had found the nerve.

Or perhaps she had only been waiting for the right angle.

"You wanted to know where I got the video?" she asked. "Maybe I filmed it myself. Maybe someone helped me. Maybe half the hospital saw what kind of wife you left on the floor and decided I deserved a copy."

Trevor's restraint cracked again, but this time he did not move toward her.

His voice did the damage instead.

"If you release another second of that night," he said, each word carved from something black, "I will bury you so deep you will spend the rest of your life begging for air."

The hallway went silent.

Dorothy's face changed.

Hale swore under his breath.

Sebastian's head turned sharply toward Trevor.

Trevor realized it the second after he said it.

Too late.

Vanessa's eyes lowered to the phone hidden in her hand.

A red dot glowed faintly on the screen.

Recording.

Her lips curved.

Not enough for the open cameras to catch easily.

Enough for Trevor to understand.

Vanessa had secretly recorded him threatening her.
