Chapter 12 Semi

Semi

I came in that morning and started laying out my tools. Case was already talking before he even touched a clipper. He’d glance over at me, say a line, wait, then try again. I didn’t give him much, which only made him more determined.

“Aye,” he finally said, stopping what he was doing. “You been off all morning.”

I tightened the lever on my clippers. “I’m thinking.”

“About what?”

I took my time answering him because I wanted the words right. “Zora.”

That was all he needed. He leaned on the counter, arms crossed, watching me like he knew there was more.

“She’s getting in my head in a way I didn’t plan for,” I admitted. “Not in a messy way. Just… settling in places I didn’t expect her to touch.”

Case nodded slowly. “Aight… what’s that doing to you?”

“It’s making me rethink how I’ve always moved,” I said.

“I’ve had women around before, but none of that ever meant anything.

This situation? This is different. I catch myself wanting her around all the time, thinking about her when I’m planning my day, checking on her without realizing I’m doing it. ”

Case didn’t say anything for a second. He wasn’t laughing. He wasn’t smirking. He was actually listening.

“You’re further in than you’re admitting,” he said.

I nodded once. “I know.”

“And you’re not scared of it.”

“I’m not.”

“Good,” he said. “Then move like it.”

I tapped a brush against my station. “I want her to know where she stands with me—without guessing, without waiting for me to finally say something. She’s solid…

she’s consistent… she’s got her own life, her own schedule, her own thing going.

And she still makes time for me. I’m not about to let that sit in limbo. ”

“So what’s the move?”

“I’m taking her out tonight,” I said. “And I’m not doing any halfway shit. I want her beside me, not around me. That’s the difference.”

“That’s the most grown-up shit you’ve said in a minute,” Case replied. “She’s gonna appreciate that.”

I didn’t need assurance, but I let the comment sit. I knew what I was doing. This wasn’t about impressing her. It was about intention. About making room for her on purpose, not by accident.

By evening, when the appointments slowed, I pulled out my phone and stepped to the back to call Zora/

“Hey,” she answered once our call connected.

“What you doing today?” I asked.

“Nothing. I’m home.”

“Good,” I said. “Be ready at eight. Pack a bag.”

There was a brief pause. “A bag?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I’m taking you somewhere for the night.”

“You’re not giving any hints?”

“No.”

She let out a breath. “Alright. I’ll be ready.”

“Text me when you’re dressed.”

“Okay.”

I hung up and walked back out. Case raised his eyebrows.

“You set it up?”

“Yeah.”

“Then stop thinking and follow through,” he said. “Women know when a man means it.”

I finished my station, swept my floor, and shut down for the day. Every step felt direct, not rushed. I wasn’t stumbling into something… I was choosing it, and tonight, she’d see exactly what that meant.

I locked the front door behind us and walked Samerah out to the car.

She had her little overnight bag on her shoulder, dragging it like she didn’t feel like carrying it but refused to hand it to me.

I helped her into the back seat, checked her belt, and shut the door.

By the time I got in the driver’s seat, she was already watching me through the mirror.

“Daddy,” she called out, fingers tapping her thigh, “is Miss Zora your girlfriend?”

She didn’t crack a smile or giggle. She wanted an answer.

“Yeah,” I said. “She is.”

She didn’t look surprised. She just nodded slowly.

A few seconds passed before she asked, “Do you love her?”

That one made me glance back. “Where you get that question from?”

“I’m asking because Kaia said her daddy loved her mommy,” she said, still sitting straight in her seat. “And I was thinking maybe that’s how it is with you and Miss Zora.”

I kept driving, but her question didn’t just slide past me. “Aight,” I said. “Tell me something. What do you think love is?”

She went quiet for a second before responding. “It means… you don’t leave somebody when they need you. You help them. You talk to them nice. You care if they’re sad or hungry or tired. And you want them around because they make things better.”

I nodded. “That’s your own definition?”

“Yes,” she said. “So… do you?”

I didn’t give her a rushed answer. I knew exactly what she was asking, and she deserved something real. “If I did,” I said, “would that be okay with you?”

“Yes,” she countered. “Because I like Miss Zora. She’s nice, and she does my hair good. And Kaia is my best friend now, so Miss Zora can’t go away or that messes everything up.”

That last part made me shake my head with a small laugh. “Oh, so you and Kaia plotting?”

“No,” she said, “but best friends stay best friends, and that means parents stay too.”

She said it with so much certainty that arguing wasn’t even an option. My baby had decided how this family was supposed to run.

The rest of the ride stayed quiet, and I used the time to sort the thought she’d pulled out of me. I’d been carrying it anyway… she just dragged it to the surface.

When we got to Mama’s house, I parked and helped Samerah out. She walked ahead of me up the steps like she lived there, and before we could knock, Mama opened the door.

“There go my baby,” she said, pulling Samerah in for a hug. Then she shifted her eyes to me, and I could already hear the comment coming. “You look nice,” she complimented.

“Thanks, Mama.”

“Come here a minute,” she ordered, walking further into the house.

She led me into the living room while Samerah ran off to her room. Mama sat down, and her entire face softened.

“What’s going on with you?” she asked.

I sat across from her and let the words come out without hesitation. “I’m serious about her. She’s steady. She’s good to me. She’s good to my daughter. I’m not dealing with anything unsure or temporary. She’s someone I want in my life, not just in my bed,” I answered honestly.

Mama nodded once, urging me to keep going.

“I don’t want to mishandle her,” I said. “I’ve done that in the past with people who didn’t matter. But she does. She’s real, and it’s easy with her in a way I haven’t had.”

Mama’s expression softened more. “And you’re ready for that?”

“Yeah,” I said. It wasn’t hesitant. “I am.”

She leaned forward slightly. “Then lead with intention. Show her she’s not second guessing what you have with her. Show her your intentions and be consistent with your actions.”

I took that in because Mama didn’t talk just to talk. When she advice, it came from a good place.

“I’m proud of you,” she added. “You’re choosing something healthy this time. I love that for you.”

I stood and kissed her cheek. “I appreciate that, Ma.”

“Now, go on,” she said. “Don’t keep my daughter-in-law waiting.” She smirked.

When I stepped back outside, I didn’t have any of the old hesitation sitting on me. Everything was clear…everything was set, and I was heading straight to Zora.

***

Zora opened the door looking damn near perfect without trying—black dress hugging her right, hair laid, lips glossed, and eyes bright.

“You look good,” I told her. “Damn good.”

“So do you,” she simpered, locking the door while I took her bag.

We walked to the car, and her energy was calm but curious. She wasn’t asking where we were going, but I could tell she wanted to.

When we got to the restaurant, it wasn’t too loud or crowded. I held the door for her, and the hostess seated us right away. Once we were seated, Zora picked up the menu and glanced over it before looking at me. “I see you’re doing it big tonight.”

“You deserve it,” I said.

She blushed at my statement. “Why are you being so nice for no reason?”

“No reason?” I asked. “You sure about that?”

She looked at me longer that time before setting the menu down. “Okay… maybe there is one. You gonna tell me?”

“Not yet.”

“You’re annoying.” She shook her head.

“And you still came out with me.”

Our drinks came, and she leaned in a little. “You didn’t tell me anything about tonight,” she said. “I figured it was cute-casual. Not… this.”

“You look good no matter what.”

She rolled her eyes but didn’t hide her smile.

We ordered, and dinner moved easy. She told me about her day off, and it still sounded like she was working.

“You always gotta be doing something, huh?”

“That’s called being grown,” she said.

“You’re absolutely right, baby. That’s one of the things that I like about you. You’re always on your shit.”

“You always hype me up.”

“I only say what’s true.”

After dinner, I guided her outside with my hand at her back.

She slipped her arm through mine, and we headed to the car.

She didn’t ask a single question on the ride to the hotel.

We just rode in a comfortable silence. When we pulled up to the hotel, I gave the valet my keys and grabbed our bags from the trunk.

I already checked in digitally, so all I had to do was head upstairs.

Once we got upstairs and I opened the suite door, she stepped in and stopped.

Everything was set exactly how I planned. Soft lighting, thoughtful details, nothing overdone. She walked forward slowly, taking in every detail.

“Semi…” she whispered. “What is all this?”

I stepped behind her. “I wanted to show you how much I love you.”

She turned, eyes wide. “You… love me?”

I nodded once.

She turned back toward the room, breathing a little deeper, letting everything catch up with her. I stepped closer, ready to say more, but she beat me to it.

“I love you too,” she countered.

I didn’t waste another second. I pulled her in, hands on her waist, and kissed her slow. She melted into me, arms around my neck, pressing her body into mine. The kiss deepened, the room warmed, and the night shifted into something intimate without either of us pushing it.

I guided her toward the bed, letting our bodies move in sync. Her hands grabbed at my shirt, her breath caught against my mouth, and every wall I kept up dropped without a fight in that moment. Zora was everything I never knew I needed and everything that I wanted.

This wasn’t a moment to remember…this was the start of everything after.

She was mine…and I wasn’t going anywhere.

The End!!!
