Dani’s phone vibrates on the table between us, and I look down to see her step-brother’s name flash across the screen.

Her brows scrunch up in confusion. “He never calls me,” she says, swiping to answer. “Hello?”

Beau, Colt, Stella, Drew, Jamie, Dani, Claire, and I are all out at dinner.

Senior year starts tomorrow—for everyone except Jamie, who’s been singing, coaching, and doing physical therapy all summer.

We decided to come out one last time before the semester gets going in full swing, and the eight of our schedules become more difficult to overlap.

Drake officially joined the Saint Augustine’s hockey team back in June, and while everyone agreed it’s what was best for the team, none of the boys are particularly stoked about the new addition.

“Yeah, I’m with them. Yes, he’s here. What is this about?” I overhear Dani say to Drake, her voice rising slightly in agitation. “Okay, okay, Jesus.”

She pulls the phone away from her ear and tries to pass it down the table to Beau, who looks at it like she just offered him a dead rat.

“I don’t want to fucking talk to him,” he says, wrinkling his nose.

“He says it’s important,” Dani argues, thrusting the phone at him again.

“If he’s not going to listen then just put me on fucking speaker, damn it,” Drake’s voice comes through loud enough for the table to hear, despite the fact that the phone call is not on speaker.

Begrudgingly, Beau takes the phone from Dani’s slim hand and hits the speaker button. “What do you want, ass-wipe?”

“Can you just shut the hell up for five fucking seconds and listen to me. They found her,” Drake says urgently. The phone call is loud and hard to understand, like wind is blowing hard in the background, and the microphone is picking it up.

“What did you just say?” Beau asks, holding the phone closer to his ear now, all traces of sarcasm gone from his face.

“My dad…” Static comes through the line, but Beau’s shoulders tense, like he can’t risk the idea of hoping that what he’s hearing is correct. “They found her—they found your sister.”
