Chelsea

I’m at happy hour with JD’s sisters, Emmy and Lily, as well as Rory and Harper Crawford and their sister-in-law, Madison.

“Okay, you promised,” I say. “I must hear the origin story of The Hotties of Saddle Creek.”

Madison takes a sip of her drink, then rubs her hands together.

“Oh, this is gonna be good,” Rory says.

“It is because it includes your husband,” Madison says to her. Then she looks at me. “And yours.”

“Oh, I love stories about JD,” his sister, Lily says.

“It dates back to high school and though they were all older than me, they were at the house a lot because of Hayes,” Madison says. “Anyways, this one time they were at the house studying for an upcoming math tournament and—”

“Hold up,” I say. “A math tournament?”

Madison grins. “Yep. They were the star Mathletes team in the school.”

“Nerd alert,” Rory says.

“Exactly. The might not have looked the part, but they were the nerdiest guys at school. Which is what I called them that night; the nerds of Saddle Creek. But Hayes argued that no, they were the hotties of Saddle Creek.”

“He gave them that name?” I ask.

“Yes,” Madison says on a laugh. “And now he hates it so much.”

“Which makes it so much fun,” Harper says.

“Being me, though, I took it a step further. I gave them each nicknames a’la Grey’s Anatomy. “

“Ohmygod! Do Hayes first, please,” Rory begs.

“I wanted to call him Mr. McHairgel because back in the day, he used more products than I did. But he insisted I give him a moniker that was equal to the ones I’d given his friends.

” Madison scrunches her face in a ewww expression.

“So he became Mr. McDreamboat. It was the best I could do without vomiting.”

“That one’s not too bad,” I say. “What are the others?”

“Jude is Mr. McHunky and Donovan is Mr. McBeefcakes.”

“That tracks. I haven’t seen him in a long time,” Lily says, “but the last time I did, he was enormous.”

“Professional football will do that to you,” Madison says.

“Which one is Jude?” Emmy asks.

“Oh, he’s the tall, hot one with all the tattoos. He co-owns Wrench Wizards, the garage across from Savannah’s salon,” Harper says. “His pale green eyes are startling in his olive complexion.”

“Not to mention his eyebrow piercing and all scowling he does,” Rory says. “Hayes is not a scowler. Still so pretty though.” She sighs, clearly very in love with her husband.

“So what is JD’s nickname?” I ask.

“Mr. McStudmuffin,” Madison says.

I snort out a laugh. “That’s actually too perfect because I’ve never seen a man eat muffins the way he does.”

“Eww,” Emmy says, holding her hands up. “We don’t want to know about our brother’s dirty skills.

“I think she was talking about actual muffins,” Lily says to her sister.

I waggle my eyebrows at them. “Or was I?”
