Chapter Sixty-Five

Iwalk into Lily’s room, machines ticking. When she sees it’s me, she smiles.
“You came back.” She’s fighting through the pain as she speaks. “You saved me again.”
I walk up to her bed and grab her hand that lies there beside her body. “I guess I’ve become used to being your hero.”
“I’ve missed you so much. The thought of you is the only thing that gets me through the night.”
“Still getting nightmares?”
“All the time.”
“Congratulations on the engagement.” I clear my throat.
Suddenly, the machines start getting louder as she tries to lean toward me. “No. No. it’s not what you think. I’d leave him in a heartbeat if you just say the word.” Before I can answer, the door busts open.
“Baby!!” Thea runs toward her daughter. Her skin looks freshly tanned like she’s back from a beach trip. She stops in her tracks when she sees me. “Oh, hunny, you need a doctor? You’re covered in blood.”
I had forgotten I unloaded an entire gun into a man. “Came here right from work.”
“Ah, you must be one of Alessio’s men.” She walks over to me. “Thank you so much.”
Did she not remember me, or was she being an asshole? I give her a death stare. “We are in the middle of a conversation, do you mind?”
The door opens again, and in walks Alessio, with Darius and Cameron right behind him.
“You gotta be fucking kidding me,” Alessio seethes as he tries to lunge at me.
Thea screams. “What is going on?!”
I look to Cameron. “Let the kid go. Let’s see if he even has the balls to pull the trigger on me.”
