Epilogue #3

Ewan would emerge from his custom-built greenhouse, his hands covered in rich soil, proudly presenting Vittoria with a basket of perfectly cultivated alpine strawberries.

The Contessa would accept them with genuine delight, treating the old Scottish groundskeeper with the reverence usually reserved for a foreign dignitary.

Raphael would stand by the railing, a glass of bourbon in his hand, watching his wife laugh in the sunlight.

He watched the woman who had once cried in the shadows of his library, consumed by a toxic, unrequited devotion, now holding court as the undisputed queen of his family.

His heart would swell with a fierce, protective joy so intense it almost physically ached.

Their life in Lucerne was a sanctuary, but they could not permanently outrun the crown.

Every now and then, when the politics of the Italian underworld required the physical presence of the Iron Saint, Azar and Raphael visited Palermo.

The return to Sicily was always a jarring transition. Stepping off the private jet into the humid heat of the Mediterranean, surrounded by the armored convoy, the reality of their power was undeniable.

When they stepped through the grand doors of the Castellan-Marchetti ancestral manor, the atmosphere was electric. The guards, the capos, and the staff bowed their heads in deep reverence.

But Azar did not walk a step behind the Don, as she had in her youth.

She walked directly beside him, her hand securely held in his.

She was no longer the orphan from the staff quarters desperate for scraps of validation.

She was Azarelle Castellan-Marchetti, the woman who had taken a bullet for the Don, the brilliant architect of their security, and the undisputed matriarch of their generation.

The capos looked at her with respect. They knew that the Don ruled the empire, but they also knew that if anyone ever disrespected the woman standing beside him, the Iron Saint would personally sever their bloodline.

They attended the formal dinners. Raphael sat at the head of the long table, radiating authority, while Azar sat at his right hand, effortlessly navigating the complex politics of the syndicate with her sharp, analytical mind. They were an unstoppable, terrifyingly beautiful team.

But the moment the mandatory obligations were fulfilled, Raphael would take her hand, lead her back to the waiting convoy, and they would fly back to the mountains, leaving the blood and the shadows behind them.

Life moved on.

It was a quiet, moonlit evening in late November. The first snow of the season had begun to fall, dusting the timber rails of the wraparound terrace in a fine, glittering powder. The lake still reflected the brilliant cold light of the stars.

Inside, the villa was quiet, save for the roaring fire in the central hearth.

Azar and Raphael were curled together on the plush sofa. A thick wool blanket was draped over their legs. Azar was resting back against Raphael’s chest, her head tucked perfectly beneath his chin, while his arms were wrapped tightly around her waist, holding her anchored to his heartbeat.

The silence between them was not the tense quiet of their past. It was a deep, resonant, beautiful peace.

Azar turned her left hand, watching the firelight catch the flawless diamond on her finger.

She thought back to the freezing nights in the stone cottage, when she had stood before a calendar with a thick black marker, desperately counting down the days until she could escape the agony of her unrequited love.

She had thought her heart was permanently encased in ice.

She had thought she was destined to walk the world alone.

Instead, she had gotten her fairy tale. She had built a life of staggering beauty with the man she had loved since she was a teenager.

"What are you thinking about, mia anima?" Raphael murmured, his deep voice rumbling against her back. He pressed a warm, lingering kiss into the crown of her hair.

Azar smiled, tilting her head back to look up at him. The sharp angles of his face were softened by the firelight, his obsidian eyes filled with nothing but unconditional adoration.

"I was just thinking about the calendar," Azar whispered softly.

Raphael’s arms tightened instinctively around her waist, a fleeting shadow of the old terror brushing against his soul. "Are you counting the days again?"

"No," Azar laughed gently, shifting her body so she could wrap her arms around his neck. She looked deep into his eyes, her heart overflowing with a love so pure and complete it eclipsed the sun. "I am not counting the days, Raphael. I am just making sure I cherish every single one of them."

Raphael exhaled a long, shaky breath, the last remaining ghost of his guilt finally, permanently laid to rest. The warlord, the Iron Saint who had once crushed his own world out of fear, had finally found his soul.

He leaned down, capturing her lips in a slow, deep, devastatingly tender kiss. The fire crackled in the hearth, the snow fell softly against the ballistic glass, and in the quiet safety of the mountains, the Iron Saint and his brilliant queen held each other perfectly at peace.
