Chapter 38

Danika’s new favorite room in the house was her office, the fourth bedroom transformed. While at first, she’d worried the

model home was too small for her, the boys, and her business—Designs by Danika was taking off after the success of Briar Ridge—she

was growing to love it. Every space felt purposeful, gorgeous. Surprisingly, Danika was also coming to enjoy the community.

It was a shocking to see how fast the boys made friends on the street—how many young families had moved in. In fact, since

they’d arrived two weeks ago, they’d already been to two block parties. She hadn’t even hated them. Holly came with her to

one, eager to see the new house and this signature style everyone was raving about.

Danika had outdone herself with the office. It had a large, sleek walnut desk, two pale pink boucle chairs, floor-to-ceiling

linen drapes. She had splurged on a new computer, with a state-of-the-art camera. When she and Trey had their daily morning

video calls, it was almost like they were face-to-face. Well, at least most of the time. His computer was outdated, though

he promised he’d buy a new one soon. It didn’t matter. He was coming to visit in three weeks.

Danika admired her reflection on the screen as she waited for Trey to log on, smoothing the ends of her hair and sliding the pendant of her necklace to the center of her chest.

A moment later, the video crackled to life.

“Hey, hi, you there?” she heard as Trey’s handsome, now-familiar face came into view.

Danika scooted forward on her elbows, smiling wider.

“Hey, yes! Trey, can you hear me? I’m here.”
