Chapter 12 Possessive Blue #2

The response arrived seconds later.

Liam: Dinner?

The single word settled warmly in his chest.

Not because of the invitation.

Because Liam wanted to spend time with him.

The realization mattered.

More than it should have.

Mason: At your place?

Three dots appeared.

Then:

Liam: Unless you've suddenly become a better cook.

Mason laughed out loud.

Mason: See you at seven.

The drive to the Carter house felt different that evening.

Less like work.

More like coming somewhere he wanted to be.

That thought should have alarmed him.

Instead, it felt right.

The familiar driveway appeared.

The familiar front porch.

The familiar warmth waiting inside.

Liam opened the door before he even knocked.

"You're early."

Mason stepped inside.

"You're judging me already."

"Always."

The smile that followed made something settle comfortably inside his chest.

The house felt quieter than usual.

No tools.

No repair equipment.

No unfinished projects.

Just Liam.

For the first time since they met, they weren't spending the evening around work.

The realization felt surprisingly intimate.

Dinner turned out to be simple pasta and garlic bread.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing complicated.

Yet somehow it felt better than most restaurant meals Mason could remember.

Maybe because of the company.

They sat at the kitchen table for nearly an hour.

Talking.

Laughing.

Sharing stories.

The conversation flowed easily.

As it always seemed to.

At some point, Liam noticed Mason becoming quieter.

The younger man narrowed his eyes.

That expression usually meant trouble.

"What?"

Mason immediately regretted asking.

Liam leaned back in his chair.

"Something's bothering you."

Of course he noticed.

The kid noticed everything.

"It's nothing."

The answer lasted approximately two seconds.

Liam looked entirely unconvinced.

"Mason."

The warning carried enough familiarity to make him smile.

For a moment, he considered avoiding the topic.

Then he remembered the promise they'd made.

No more pretending.

No more retreating.

Honesty.

Even when it was uncomfortable.

"There was a guy."

Liam blinked.

Then immediately understood.

A grin appeared.

A very annoying grin.

"Oh."

Mason pointed at him.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"You know exactly what."

The grin widened.

Mason groaned.

The younger man looked entirely too pleased with himself.

"Evan?"

The fact that he knew the name made everything worse.

"See?"

Liam laughed.

The sound filled the room.

Warm and bright and impossible not to love.

The realization hit before Mason could stop it.

Love.

The word appeared unexpectedly.

He wasn't ready to examine it.

Not yet.

Unfortunately, the thought remained.

Liam's smile softened slightly.

"You know I turned him down."

"I know."

The answer came immediately.

Because he did.

That wasn't the issue.

The issue was everything else.

Mason looked down briefly.

Then admitted the truth.

"You have choices."

The room grew quieter.

Liam studied him carefully.

"What does that mean?"

Mason shrugged.

It felt inadequate.

But honest.

"It means somebody sees you for five minutes and wants to ask you out."

The younger man's expression shifted.

Understanding slowly appeared.

"Mason..."

The older man laughed softly.

Embarrassed now.

Which somehow felt worse than jealousy.

"Forget it."

"I'm not forgetting it."

Of course he wasn't.

Liam stood and crossed the room.

The movement felt deliberate.

Purposeful.

When he stopped beside Mason, the younger man's voice softened.

"Look at me."

The request felt gentle.

Mason obeyed anyway.

Immediately.

The realization wasn't lost on either of them.

Liam smiled slightly.

"There are always choices."

A pause.

"But that's not the same thing as wanting someone."

The words settled heavily between them.

Mason's chest tightened.

Because suddenly this conversation wasn't about jealousy.

Or insecurity.

Or age.

It was about something much simpler.

Being chosen.

The younger man continued.

"I know what I want."

His voice remained steady.

Certain.

And for the first time all evening, Mason believed him completely.

Silence followed.

Not awkward.

Not uncertain.

Comfortable.

The kind of silence shared between people who understood each other.

Liam eventually sat beside him on the couch.

Close enough that their shoulders touched.

Neither moved away.

The evening stretched around them.

Conversation drifting naturally from topic to topic.

Future plans.

University.

Books.

Work.

Life.

The big things.

The small things.

All of it mattered.

Because they were learning each other.

Not through grand gestures.

Through ordinary moments.

The kind that built something lasting.

Hours passed almost unnoticed.

At one point, Liam rested his head lightly against Mason's shoulder.

The simple gesture nearly undid him.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it felt natural.

As though they'd been doing it forever.

Mason wrapped an arm around him.

The younger man immediately relaxed.

Trusting.

Comfortable.

Home.

The realization hit harder than expected.

Because that's what this was becoming.

Not a distraction.

Not a temporary attraction.

Something real.

Something deeper than either of them had planned.

Eventually the room grew quiet.

Darkness settled beyond the windows.

Neither seemed eager for the evening to end.

Mason looked down.

Liam looked up.

Their eyes met.

And suddenly every conversation from the past several weeks seemed to exist in that single moment.

The coffee.

The repairs.

The late-night texts.

The honesty.

The trust.

All of it had brought them here.

"I like this," Liam said quietly.

Mason smiled.

"Yeah."

The younger man's eyes softened.

"Me too."

The words settled warmly between them.

Simple.

Honest.

True.

And sitting together in the quiet house, surrounded by repaired walls and shared memories, Mason realized something important.

The relationship was no longer built on attraction alone.

It was built on friendship.

Trust.

Comfort.

Choice.

The deeper things that remained after excitement faded.

And as he held Liam a little closer, the future felt less frightening than it had before.

Not because the challenges had disappeared.

Because they would face them together.

One day at a time.
