Chapter 16 Confessions in the Dark #2

And because of that fear, he'd almost destroyed the best thing that had happened to him in years.

Maybe ever.

The thought made his chest ache.

Liam shifted slightly.

The movement pulled Mason back to the present.

Back to the young man standing in front of him.

Waiting.

Trusting.

Loving him.

Despite everything.

The realization shattered whatever resistance remained.

Mason stepped closer.

Close enough to see uncertainty beginning to creep into Liam's eyes.

The sight hurt immediately.

Because he recognized that look.

The fear that came after vulnerability.

The fear that maybe you'd said too much.

Given too much.

Risked too much.

Mason refused to let it remain there.

"Liam."

The younger man looked up instantly.

Hope and nervousness mixed together in his expression.

Mason reached for his hand.

Their fingers intertwined naturally.

The simple contact grounded him.

Steadied him.

Helped him find the courage he'd been avoiding.

For once, he stopped searching for perfect words.

He simply told the truth.

"I've been running."

The admission came quietly.

Yet it felt heavier than any confession he'd made in years.

Liam remained silent.

Listening.

Giving him space.

The way he always did.

Mason swallowed.

Then continued.

"I convinced myself it was for your benefit."

A humorless laugh escaped him.

"It wasn't."

The younger man's eyes softened.

The understanding there nearly undid him.

"I was scared."

The words felt easier now.

Not because they were comfortable.

Because they were finally honest.

"Every time I looked at you, I saw someone with a future full of possibilities."

He tightened his grip slightly.

"I kept thinking you deserved better."

Liam immediately opened his mouth.

Probably to argue.

Mason smiled.

Then shook his head.

"Let me finish."

The younger man obediently closed his mouth.

Barely.

The sight almost made Mason laugh.

Almost.

Instead, he continued.

"I thought if I stepped back now, it would hurt less later."

The confession hung heavily between them.

"So I started creating distance."

A pause.

"And every day was miserable."

The honesty surprised even him.

Yet once the words started coming, he couldn't stop them.

"Every text I didn't send."

Another pause.

"Every conversation I ended early."

His voice lowered.

"Every time I walked away from you."

The younger man's eyes glistened slightly.

The sight made Mason's chest tighten painfully.

Because he knew exactly how much hurt he'd caused.

And none of it had been necessary.

The storm growled outside.

Lightning flashed beyond the windows.

Neither noticed.

Neither cared.

The entire world seemed to have narrowed to this moment.

This conversation.

This choice.

Mason stepped even closer.

"There was a point where I realized something."

Liam waited.

Breathless.

The way someone waited for important truths.

"I wasn't running from a mistake."

His voice softened.

"I was running from happiness."

The admission settled into the room.

Simple.

Complete.

True.

For the first time in years, Mason felt entirely exposed.

No walls.

No defenses.

No excuses.

Just honesty.

And strangely, it felt good.

Relieving.

As though he'd been carrying something heavy for far too long.

Liam's hand tightened around his.

The silent support made everything easier.

Mason smiled.

Then finally said the words he'd been carrying for weeks.

Maybe longer.

"I love you."

The reaction was immediate.

Liam's breath caught.

His eyes widened slightly.

The sight made Mason's smile grow.

Because somehow, even after everything, the younger man still seemed surprised.

The realization felt absurd.

"I love your stubbornness."

A quiet laugh escaped Liam.

Encouraged, Mason continued.

"I love the way you care about everyone."

His thumb brushed gently across Liam's hand.

"I love your terrible jokes."

That earned a proper laugh.

The sound warmed something deep inside him.

"And I love that you never stop believing people can be better."

His voice lowered.

Emotion threatening every word.

"Even when they don't deserve it."

Liam's eyes filled with tears.

Not sad tears.

The other kind.

The ones that appeared when emotions became too large to contain.

The sight nearly broke Mason's heart.

In the best possible way.

For a moment, neither spoke.

They simply stood together.

Hands joined.

Walls gone.

Truth finally exposed.

Then Mason made one final promise.

Not dramatic.

Not perfect.

Just honest.

"I'm done hiding behind fear."

The words felt significant.

Because he meant them.

Every single one.

"No more running."

A pause.

"No more deciding what's best for you without asking."

Another pause.

"No more pretending I don't want this."

The younger man's smile trembled slightly.

Beautiful.

Hopeful.

Real.

And in that moment, Mason understood something important.

Love wasn't certainty.

It wasn't guarantees.

It wasn't protection from pain.

It was choosing someone despite uncertainty.

Choosing them again and again.

Every day.

Every storm.

Every challenge.

The realization felt surprisingly simple.

Liam stepped forward.

The remaining distance disappeared.

Their foreheads touched.

Warmth spread through Mason's chest.

Outside, the storm continued raging.

Inside, something finally settled.

Not because their problems had vanished.

Graduate school still existed.

His parents still existed.

The future remained complicated.

But none of those things felt impossible anymore.

Because now they were facing them together.

Not as two people afraid of what came next.

As two people who had finally chosen each other completely.

And standing there in the soft glow of candlelight, surrounded by rain and thunder and the aftermath of too many fears, Mason realized something that would've terrified him months ago.

For the first time in years, he wasn't trying to fix anything.

He was simply allowing himself to be happy.

And somehow, that felt like the most important repair of all.
