Chapter 22

Vaughn

Robin is on the garage couch with four business books, a highlighter, and a system of color-coded post-it notes that Toby taught him. Pink for finances, blue for legal, green for recipes, yellow for marketing.

He's wearing one of my shirts — it hangs loose on him, sleeves rolled up — and his bandaged hand is propped on a pillow. Every few minutes he tries to hold a book open and write at the same time, swears, and props the book under a couch cushion instead.

"Did you know the average bakery needs between fifty and eighty thousand in initial investment?" he says without looking up.

"That's a lot of croissants," Silas observes from under his carburetor rebuild.

"Approximately sixteen thousand at five dollars each. Or ten thousand at eight for specialty items."

"You did that in your head?" Ezra sounds impressed from under his own bike.

"Recipe ratios. Math is math." Robin photographs a page with his phone, one-handed. "This book says location is everything. Foot traffic, parking, neighborhood demographics. You need a minimum of eight hundred people passing your storefront daily for a walk-in bakery model."

Robin flips a page, frustrated. "The numbers on a standalone bakery are brutal. Storefront lease alone would eat half the startup budget."

I tighten a bolt on the exhaust system. Glance over at him. The light catches in his hair. He's biting his lip — the concentration face, the one that means his brain is running faster than his mouth, which is saying something.

He stops on a page. Reads it twice. "Huh. This chapter's about alternative models. Café spaces inside existing businesses — bookstores, gyms, co-working spaces. Lower overhead because you piggyback on existing foot traffic and shared infrastructure."

He photographs the page and keeps reading. I go back to the exhaust.

The garage door bangs open.

Toby is standing there, flushed, out of breath, vibrating with the specific energy of a man who has news and cannot physically contain it for one more second. Knox is behind him, looking like he was mid-sentence when Toby bolted.

"ROBIN."

Robin looks up from his book. "What? What happened? Are you okay?"

Knox reaches for Toby's arm. "Babe, I was trying to—"

"In a second." Toby doesn't even look at him. He's locked on Robin like a missile. "Knox, I love you, sex later, this is important."

Knox blinks. "I just wanted a kiss."

"Kiss later. Robin. ROBIN."

"I'm right here, Toby. Use your inside voice."

Toby crosses the garage in about four steps, nearly trips over Ezra's legs sticking out from under his bike, and drops onto the couch next to Robin hard enough to bounce the business books off the cushion.

"Margaret."

"Margaret what?"

"Margaret saw the business books I've been checking out for you. She asked what I was researching. I told her about you wanting to start your own place, and she got that look—"

"The plotting look."

"The terrifying plotting look." Toby grabs Robin's good hand. "She asked if you'd be interested in the café space."

The garage goes quiet. Even Ezra slides out from under his bike.

"What café space?" Robin says carefully.

"The one by the front entrance! It used to be a café years ago — it's got the bones, the hookups, even some of the permits are still active from the last tenant.

Margaret's been trying to fill it for months.

And when I told her about you, she said—'That boy makes cookies that could make angels weep. We need him here.'"

"Margaret said that?"

"She said it more sternly. But that was the gist."

Robin hasn't moved. His book is still open on his lap, the page about alternative café models inside existing businesses staring up at him like it planned this.

"Think about it," Toby says, squeezing his hand. "Built-in foot traffic. People who sit for hours reading and need coffee. Parents who come for story hour. Students. The whole neighborhood. You wouldn't need a storefront lease — you'd be inside the library. Your startup costs drop by half."

"What about rent?" Robin asks.

"The space needs work — cleaning, paint, equipment. Because of that, Margaret's offering practically nothing for the first six months. Two hundred a month."

"Two hundred a month," Robin repeats. "For a café space with built-in customers."

"With permits already half in place. With your best friend working twenty feet away." Toby's bouncing on the couch hard enough to rattle the tools on my workbench. "Robin, this is it."

Robin looks down at his book. Then at Toby. Then at me.

His face is doing everything at once — hope, fear, excitement, the particular terror of wanting something so much it could break you.

"It's a real chance," I tell him quietly.

"It's terrifying."

"Good things are."

He's quiet for a long moment. The garage holds its breath. Silas has stopped pretending to work on the carburetor. Knox is leaning in the doorway with his arms crossed, watching Robin with the steady patience of an alpha who knows when something important is happening to his pride.

"Can I see the space?" Robin says.

Toby nearly levitates off the couch. "Margaret gave me the key."

Knox catches Toby around the waist as he rockets past. "Can I get that kiss now?"

Toby kisses him — fast, distracted, already pulling away. "Robin, come on, let's go NOW—"

"Let him breathe," Knox says, but he's smiling.

Robin closes his book. Sets it on the couch. Looks at Toby with the expression of a man who's about to walk toward the rest of his life and wants to remember what the moment before felt like.

"Everyone's coming. Robin, come on—"

"Everyone?" Silas looks down at his oil-stained hands.

"Everyone," Toby repeats. "This is a family thing."

Nobody argues with that.

Robin rides with me because his hand can't grip handlebars yet, and the feeling of him pressed against my back with his good arm around my waist and his face tucked against my shoulder is something I'm going to carry for a long time.

Toby rides with Knox. Silas, Ezra, Ash, and Jason on their own bikes. We pull into the library parking lot looking exactly like what we are — a motorcycle club showing up to look at a café space — and Margaret watches us through the front window with an expression I can't read from here.

Inside, Toby waves us past the front desk. Margaret nods at Robin, says nothing, and goes back to her computer. Toby told me once that Margaret communicates primarily through strategic silence and terrifying competence. I believe it.

The café space is around a corner from the main reading room, behind a half-wall that separates it from the stacks.

It's small. Maybe four hundred square feet.

There's a counter with cracked tile, a built-in shelf that could be a display case, plumbing stubs where a sink used to be, and electrical panels that look like they haven't been touched since the nineties.

It's dusty. It's neglected. It smells like old carpet and forgotten things.

Robin walks in and stops breathing.

I know because I'm watching him. I'm always watching him.

And the thing that happens to his face when he steps into that space — it's not the performance.

It's not the mask. It's the look he gets when he cracks open a perfect croissant, or when a kid at story hour asks for seconds, or when he says I love you half-asleep and means it more than anything he's ever said awake.

"Oh," he says quietly.

Then he starts talking and doesn't stop for ten minutes.

"The counter needs to come out — not the bones, just the tile, we'd retile with something warmer, maybe butcher block on top for the service area.

Ovens along the back wall, there's enough depth for a commercial convection and a deck oven if we go compact.

Display case here—" He walks to the built-in shelf, runs his good hand along it.

"Glass front, lit from inside, so people see the pastries when they walk in from the reading room.

That's your marketing right there. You don't need a sign.

You need a croissant in a glass case and the smell of butter at 7 AM. "

"What about coffee?" Knox asks from the doorway, arms crossed, already doing the math. I can see it — the alpha assessing the investment, the risk, the return.

"Espresso machine here." Robin points to the plumbing stubs. "The hookups are already roughed in. We'd need to update them, but the bones are here. Drip coffee for volume, espresso for margin. And tea — good tea, loose leaf, because the afternoon crowd is readers and readers drink tea."

"Readers drink coffee," Silas says.

"Readers drink both. You'd drink tea here. Trust me."

Silas looks mildly offended but doesn't argue.

"Seating?" Ezra asks, scanning the space with sharp eyes.

"Limited inside — maybe six stools along a counter bar facing the window. But you don't need much because the library IS the seating. People buy their coffee and their croissant and they go sit in the reading room. That's the model. The library does the ambiance. I do the food."

He's moving through the space like he already owns it — pacing the dimensions, checking the outlets, crouching to look at the baseboards. His bandaged hand hangs at his side but his good hand is touching everything, measuring by feel.

"The floor needs to come up," he says. "Carpet in a food service space is a health code violation. We'd need tile or sealed concrete. Sealed concrete is cheaper and it looks better anyway — industrial but warm if you do it right."

Jason is leaning against the half-wall, watching Robin with the expression of a man who understands kitchens. "What's your capacity? How many covers a day?"

"Bakery café model, not a restaurant. No table service. Counter only. I could realistically do eighty to a hundred transactions a day with one person on counter and me in the back. More during peak morning hours if I have help."

"You'd have help," Jason says simply.

Robin looks at him. Something passes between them — two men who understand kitchens, who know what it means to build something with your hands, who've both been shaped by the good and bad of that world.

"The light," Robin says, and his voice has changed. Softer. "Look at the light."

I look. Late afternoon sun is coming through two windows on the west wall, casting long warm rectangles across the dusty floor. It's golden. The kind of light that makes everything it touches look like it matters.

"Morning light would come from the east, through the reading room windows," Robin says. "It would hit the display case first. People would walk in and the first thing they'd see is pastries lit up like a—" He stops. Swallows. "Like a light."

Nobody says anything.

Robin turns to me. His eyes are bright and his face is completely open and he looks terrified and certain in equal measure.

"I'm doing this," he says. Not a question. Not asking permission.

"Yeah," I say. "You are."

"It needs everything."

"Good thing you've got everyone."

He looks around the room. Knox in the doorway.

Toby vibrating beside him. Silas with his hands in his pockets, already measuring the walls with his eyes.

Ezra running numbers in his head. Jason understanding the kitchen.

Ash leaning against the half-wall with his arms crossed and the ghost of a smile that says my little brother is going to be okay.

And me. Standing in a dusty café space in a library, watching Robin Martinez see his future for the first time and knowing — the way I know engines, the way I know my pride, the way I know the sound of Robin's real laugh versus his performance laugh — that this is going to work.

"Two hundred a month," Robin says to no one. "I can do two hundred a month."

"You can do a lot more than that," Toby says.

Robin laughs. Wet. Real. The best sound in the world.

"Okay," he says. "Okay. Let's do this."
