Chapter 26
Nico
Six weeks later, I finish the book.
Not Silas's book — I finished that two weeks ago, on a sunny afternoon in the booth, and sat with the last page for a long time.
The butler, reflecting on his life. The choices he made and the ones he didn't. The woman he could have loved if he'd let himself.
I closed the cover and put it on the bar and Silas appeared — the way Silas does, like he was waiting for this exact moment — and set a new book in front of me without a word.
Giovanni's Room. Baldwin. I haven't started it yet. I'm still sitting with Ishiguro.
The book I finish today is the NSRC's case file on Coldwell Development.
Diana Okafor sent it to me last week — the complete investigative report, two hundred and forty pages, every property documented, every transaction traced, every thread I pulled now woven into a legal document that will end Richard Langford's career and possibly put him in a federal facility.
My spreadsheet is in there. My analysis.
My name, cited fourteen times as the primary whistleblower.
I read it at the booth. My booth, with the outlet Ezra cleared and the charger plugged in and Mango on the windowsill doing her slow blink at the parking lot.
The coffee is in the good mug. Jason made eggs this morning — he makes eggs every morning now, for whoever's downstairs, because Jason feeds people and has stopped pretending there's a limit to the guest list.
The last page is an appendix. Twenty-six properties listed in order of acquisition. Business name, owner, location, status. Most say DEMOLISHED or VACANT. Four say UNDER REVIEW — the ones the NSRC is trying to unwind.
I close the file. Set it facedown on the table, which is still my default, but only for documents. My phone sits face-up now. Has for weeks. Small distinction. Matters to me.
"Done?" Ezra asks, from his stool. Not looking up from the books. He always knows.
"Done."
"And?"
"It's thorough. Diana's team is good. Langford doesn't have a defense — the project codes alone are enough, and when you add the pattern analysis and the financial routing, it's—" I stop. Rewind. "It's done. It's handled. The right people have it."
"But?"
"Rosa Navarro's shop is still a vacant lot."
"You can't fix that one," he says.
"I know."
"You can fix the next one."
"I know that too."
He returns to the books. The conversation is over, and it was exactly enough.

I call Diana at ten.
"Nico." She says my name now, not Mr. Ward. Three weeks of phone calls and email chains and one very long video conference where I walked her team through Coldwell's acquisition model will do that. "I got your analysis on the Portland portfolio. It's exactly what we needed."
"There are two more properties I want to flag. Both in Idaho — a hardware store and a veterinary clinic. Different company, same pattern. Hidden routing, off-book project codes, properties that don't match the development profile."
"You think it's another Langford?"
"I think Langford wasn't unique. I think he was just the one who got caught."
Silence on the line. The silence of an attorney recalculating the scope of a problem.
"Can you put together a preliminary analysis? Same format as the Coldwell file?"
"I already started. I'll have it to you by Friday."
"Nico." She pauses. The professional register softens by one degree. "You know we can't pay you for this. The NSRC runs on grants and donations. Consulting fees aren't in the budget."
"I know."
"But if you're serious about doing this — and based on the last three weeks, you're serious — I want to talk about formalizing the arrangement. Pro bono consulting, official NSRC affiliation, access to our databases. You'd have legal protection and institutional backing."
"I'd like that."
"Good. I'll draft a letter of engagement.
" Another pause. "For what it's worth — what you're building here?
The pattern analysis, the financial forensics?
Nobody else is doing this. The advocacy organizations fight the cases after they surface.
Nobody's looking for the pattern before the next community gets torn apart. "
"That's the idea."
"It's a good idea. I'll call you Friday."
I hang up. Set the phone face-up on the bar.
Ezra's laptop is fully closed.
"You heard all of that," I say.
"Shifter hearing. I hear everything. It's a burden."
"You're smiling."
"It's involuntary."
"You're proud of me."
"That's also involuntary." He opens the laptop. "The depreciation schedule is almost done. You were right about the garage equipment — the write-down was three years overdue."
"I'm always right about depreciation."
"You're always right about everything. It's your worst quality."
"I thought my worst quality was the exit sweeps."
"You stopped doing those."
"I did." I look at the bar. The oak, the grain, sixty years of people. The window where Mango is sleeping. The kitchen where Jason is singing something off-key. The corner where Silas is reading with a focus that borders on religious practice. "I stopped needing to."

At noon, Cass calls.
"Nico! I booked the flight. I'm coming for five days. Uncle Martin paid. He said, and I quote: It's an investment in family infrastructure. He's learning feelings, Nico. It's terrifying."
"It's progress."
"He asked me about David. By name. He knew David's name. I almost fell over." She's breathless, the way Cass is always breathless, running at full speed because walking has never occurred to her as an option. "Is the spreadsheet bartender going to be there?"
"He lives here, Cass. He'll be here."
"Good. I have questions prepared."
"Of course you do."
"Also I need to meet the cat. And the drag queen. And the man who doesn't talk. And the one who feeds everyone. And the alpha — is that what you call him? The one who communicates in looks?"
"That's Knox. Don't stare at him."
"I'm absolutely going to stare at him."
"Cass."
"I'm bringing the green dress. And David says hello. His hands are still sweaty. We're going on a third date next week."
"Third date is significant."
"I know. I'm cautiously optimistic." A pause. The brief, rare Cass silence that means something real is underneath. "Nico? I'm glad you're happy. You sound different. Like you sound like — yourself. The real version."
"I am myself."
"No, I mean — you used to sound like you were giving a presentation. Even to me. Even when it was just us. And now you sound like a person who's just talking." She laughs. "It's nice. I like this Nico."
"I like this Nico too."
"Tell Ezra I said hi. Tell him I'm bringing David photos for approval. Tell him if he hurts you I'll — I don't know, what do you threaten a lion with?"
"A spray bottle."
"I'll bring a spray bottle."
She hangs up. Four minutes, eight seconds. Cass remains efficient.

Five o'clock. The bar settles into its evening rhythm.
Knox is in his office with the door open.
Toby is coming by after the library closes.
Jason is prepping something in the kitchen that smells like garlic and rosemary and the warmth of a meal being made for people you love.
Robin brought pastries at three — he brings pastries every day now, from the café, always enough for everyone, always with a specific one that's for Vaughn and only Vaughn, which they think no one notices and everyone notices.
Silas is in his corner. Mango has migrated from the windowsill to the bar top, where she's lying in the last patch of afternoon sun with the absolute conviction of an animal who knows she belongs here.
Ezra closes his laptop. The real close — the end-of-day close, the one that means the books are done and the evening is his.
"Walk?" he asks.
We walk. Not far — down the road past the garage, along the tree line where the light turns golden at this hour.
His hand finds mine. The mark on my neck is a scar now, smooth, two crescents that have become as familiar as any other part of my body.
I forget it's there until a shifter sees it and their eyes shift — the brief flicker of recognition, the acknowledgment.
Claimed. Bonded. His.
"Diana wants to formalize the NSRC arrangement," I say. "Pro bono consulting. Official affiliation."
"I heard."
"I'm going to say yes."
"I know."
"I'm going to need a desk. The booth is fine for reading, but if I'm doing real analysis—"
"There's space in the office. Knox already mentioned it."
"Knox mentioned it?"
"Knox said: If he's going to fix the NSRC's pattern recognition, he needs a real desk. The booth has a bad outlet." Ezra pauses. "The outlet you said was fine."
"It was fine for a laptop. It's not fine for a dual-monitor setup."
"You're getting a dual-monitor setup."
"I'm thinking about getting a dual-monitor setup."
"Nico. You've already priced them. I saw the browser tabs."
"I was doing preliminary research."
"You had three tabs open comparing response times."
"I'm thorough."
He laughs. The real one — the full sound that changes his face and makes my chest do the thing. I've been hearing it more often lately. The ratio of half-smiles to real laughs is shifting, slowly, toward something warmer.
We walk. The road is quiet. The trees are turning — October settling in, the leaves going amber and red, the air sharpening.
In three weeks Cass will be here, with the green dress and the spray bottle and the questions prepared.
In a month, Diana will send the first formal case file.
In a year — who knows. A year ago I was in a Hyundai Sonata with a thin file and a mandate to assess a bar that doesn't make commercial sense.
The bar still doesn't make commercial sense. The depreciation schedule is finally updated. The formula errors are fixed. And the bar still runs at a loss, the way it has for sixty years, because the point was never the money.
The point was the address. Having a place where people know where to find you.
"Ezra."
"Yeah."
"I'm happy."
He looks at me. Those brown eyes with the gold edge, the ones that go full amber when the lion is close, the ones that were entirely gold above me the night he claimed me and said I love you before he planned to.
"I know," he says.
"You know because you're observant."
"I know because you just told me. That's not observation, that's listening."
"I want to make sure you heard it. I'm happy. Here, with you, in this town, in this bar that loses money, on this road, right now. I spent years being efficient instead of being alive. I'm done."
"The butler."
"The butler. Silas's book. The man who wasted his life being useful.
" I stop walking. Turn to face him. The light is gold on his face, the evening sun doing what it does out here — making everything look like it was painted specifically to be beautiful.
"I'm not going to be the butler. I'm going to be the man who sat in a booth for two weeks and ate nachos and fell in love with a bartender who does spreadsheets and feeds stray cats and has terrible taste in mattresses. "
"The mattress has been fine since the claiming."
"The mattress has a spring. The spring is in my kidney."
"Your kidney is on the wrong side of the bed."
"My kidney is in the standard human location. The spring is in the wrong location."
"We could get a new mattress."
"We could get a new mattress."
We stand in the road. His hand in mine, the mark on my neck, the trees turning. The bar behind us — small, impractical, running at a loss, full of people who chose each other.
"Let's go home," I say.
And we do.
