Chapter Sixteen

“Well that’s fucking fantastic!” Kai suddenly exclaims, making me jolt and I focus on him as he pulls a note off of the door.

He’s finally managed to convince his wings to let him down but every now and then his feet lift slightly off the floor and he glares at them like they’ve got a mind of their own.

For all I know they really do. It’s highly amusing and I keep having to try and I hide my smirk, the other’s not so subtle in their amusement.

“What’s wrong?” I ask groaning as I eye the note in his hand with trepidation, I’m not sure I can take much more right now.

“She’s not here!” Levi practically growls reading over Kai’s shoulder and I raise my eyebrow.

“Apparently something urgent came up and she can’t meet us.

She says it’s unsafe and to try to stay under the radar as much as possible.

Someone here is working for the wrong side but she hasn’t worked out who.

Then she just says be careful. That’s it.

Oh hang on,” Kai says as he turns the paper over and frowns, “apparently we all have horse riding lessons every day after school. No exceptions and it’s mandatory. ” Kai shakes his head.

“That is such a weird request.” Jett says. “Sorry I mean order.” He adds sarcastically.

“I’m hardly surprised though if I’m honest. All she’s given us so far is cryptic words with what I’m beginning to suspect is mountains of hidden meanings and weird ass instructions.” I frown.

“That’s true but she hasn’t proven herself to be anything but honest.” Levi says, the voice of reason as always.

“Come on let’s get back to the rooms. I don’t know about you but my bed is starting to call to me pretty fucking hard.” Erin groans.

“Oh yeah definitely. Research and power practice can wait until tomorrow. I think our gifts have had enough of a workout tonight.” I agree wholeheartedly.

“As much as it’s going to suck major fucking ass, I think it might be a good idea to put our glamours back on, we don’t need any more attention right now.” Kyle suggests and we all groan but do as he suggests, seeing that it will cause us less hassle in the long run.

Oh my god.

It’s like trying to pull on a suit of fucking tar that’s been pulled in the opposite direction at the same time. It’s hard work and takes a really long time for me to manage it and by the end of it I am bone tired and super fucking uncomfortable.

“Fuck that was hard.” Jax groans from beside me and I kiss him softly. Too tired to even verbally agree right now.

“The sooner we get back the sooner we can drop the glamours again.” Damon grumbles, even his voice is quiet and exhausted.

I quite honestly feel like I could sleep for a week and I know part of it is to do with putting the godawful human glamour back on.

We trudge slowly up to our room none of us moving as quickly as we want to but at the moment it’s impossible to move any faster.

As we get to our floor I can’t help but let lose an audible groan and curse as I see Rebecca and her Bonded walking down the hall in front of us.

Can we seriously not catch a break?

If she started something now I’d go down as easily as a wet piece of freaking paper. Fortunately the incident in the dining hall obviously was enough of a warning to make them at least cautious for the time being because they shoot us death glares but quickly enter the room directly opposite ours.

Well that’s fantastic.

At least they didn’t bitch I suppose. I’m not sure that having them in the room opposite ours is going to be good in the long run though.

After all, I have no idea how long their wariness is going to last but since they’ve already proven to have large egos I doubt it will be long before they’re trying to come for us again.

A problem to deal with another day.

Erin and her guys say goodbye to us at our door before they walk through theirs and as soon as we are through our door we all drop our glamours and the relief that courses through me is almost staggering. It’s still quite early but I think we’re all in agreement that showers and bed are needed.

“What the hell was that thing and why do I find myself asking that question more often than not these days?” Kai sighs heavily as he perches on the edge of the couch and rubs a hand through his hair.

“We’ll get answers soon.” Jax tries to reassure him, squeezing his shoulder. “At least I fucking hope we do, there’s more questions than answers at the moment.”

“I’m not really sure why we have to wait to find the missing Centres. I would’ve thought that Nyx would want us on it right away.” I say frowning and deciding that if we aren’t sleeping right away I’m going to make everyone hot chocolates.

“We don’t know anything about this world. It would be fairly foolhardy to throw us in the deep end and expect us to float without at least some prior knowledge of the world we’re now a part of.” Maverick says logically.

“That makes sense I guess. I’m just impatient and I want to help them.

I hope we get the sign that she said she would send soon because I absolutely hate that there are so many Centres being held captive and we’re not doing anything.

” I say trying to keep my frustration contained so I don’t spill any of the hot chocolate as I pour.

“I’m sure we will, Darling.” Levi says, helping me hand out the hot chocolates as we all settle down on the couches. “Do any of you know how to ride?” He asks before adding, “Me, Kai and Hunter do since we had horses growing up.”

Kai smiles fondly as his eyes glaze clearly taking a trip down memory lane.

“I don’t.” I say grimacing, “Weapons, and combat I was trained in extensively but there was never any need for me to learn how to ride a horse. I’ve always wanted to try though.” I say unable to hide the excitement from my voice.

“I do.” Jax offers plainly.

I’m about to ask where he learnt but his face shuts down and it becomes obvious that it’s not a happy memory for him. I move closer and move his t-shirt sleeve slightly and kiss one of his scars. He wraps his arm around me and I look up at him.

“Are you going to be ok?” I ask, the others waiting to hear his answer too.

“Yeah I’ll be fine. Just need to be careful of a couple of triggers.” He says eyeing the guys.

“It’s alright Jax, we’ve got your back.” Hunter reassures him.

I want to ask but as always I will not push and I’ll wait until he’s ready to share it with me. I trust that if it was something that I needed to be aware of he would tell me now.

His lips dip as he gently kisses me and when he pulls back his eyes are full of gratitude. One day they’ll really start to understand that I meant what I said and I’m not going to be changing any time soon.

“It will all work itself out. Hopefully we can get a hold of Nicole at some point and she can explain why we needed to lie low, why it’s dangerous, who she suspects is behind the unknown danger and why we suddenly need riding lessons every day after school.

” Maverick starts to list and I’m sure there’s a couple of questions that have been missed out.

“Fuck.” Hunt says simply and I hum in agreement.

“Well I’m still exhausted from fighting whatever the hell that was.” I say getting up and putting my mug in the kitchen.

“Me too,” Levi agrees getting up and following me down the hall, “can I stay with you tonight Darling?” He asks cautious hope entering his eyes.

It fascinates me that he’d ever think that I would say no.

“Of course.” I smile leaning forward and placing my hand on his chest making him bend down so that I can kiss him. “I’m going to shower first, I can still smell that fucking thing.” I frown as my nose wrinkles making him chuckle. He bends down and kisses the tip of my nose.

“Alright, Darling. I’d offer to come and help you out but I have a feeling I wouldn’t be able to hold back and our magic is still unruly enough to cause issue.”

“You think you wouldn’t be able to control yourself?” I scoff, “I don’t think you’d get a chance to find out before I’ve jumped you. I seriously think I’m getting a case of blue lady balls.” I chuckle as he erupts in surprised laughter.

His eyes heat as he picks me up, my legs wrapping around him as he sandwiches me between his large and hot as sin body and the wall behind me.

His head dips as he slowly starts to kiss up my neck and my hands smooth up his wide shoulders and into his hair.

I tug lightly making him growl against my neck and sending shock waves of pleasure throughout my body.

He pulls back slightly so he can see me and I grin at his reaction, his eyes light with literal sparks as he smirks wickedly.

His grip tightens on me and my hands move to his horns, I stroke them gently, before gripping them in a firm grip making his legs buckle slightly as his mouth lands on mine, his tongue immediately pushing past my lips and making me moan as his tongue dances with mine.

He pushes his hips against my throbbing core and the friction from him and my own jeans makes me tremble with need.

Suddenly we are completely drenched in water. So much so that we both splutter and I have to move soaking wet hair from my face.

“What the fuck?” Levi asks as we both turn towards a sheepish looking Jax.

“Whoops.” He shrugs, making me grin, “Sage was doing her magic fire thing and you had something going on that just looked like black smoke but I have no idea what it could do. We don’t want to explode the place so we all decided it was up to me to stop it since, you know water gift and we thought it was funny because . . . cold shower.” He chuckles.

“Dude you’re rambling.” Levi smirks, his hands flexing on my hips. “I get why you stopped us. Remind me to ask Mav to look up what that black smoke could be,” Levi starts.

“Already added it to the list of stuff we have to research!” Mav calls from the living area, amusement more than obvious in his tone.
