The fire between us
Author's pov-
Divya's grip on the door tightened as she stared at him. The man she had spent years trying to erase, the man who had shattered her, was standing infront of her in the middle of the night. His presence alone was enough to bring back the pain she had buried deep inside.
Her heart clenched. Not because she was happy to see him-but because she had spent years preparing for this moment, convincing herself that when he finally showed up, he would mean nothing to her.
And yet...
She stepped back slightly, her voice cold. "It's late, purv. What do you want?"
Purv exhaled sharply. He hadn't thought this far ahead. He hadn't planned what to say, only that he needed to see her. Needed to look into her eyes and confirm if Rudra was right.
If she still loved him.
But standing here now, with her gaze colder than he had ever seen, the weight of his silence crushed him.
"You," he finally said. His voice was low, strained. "I needed to see you."
Divya let out a breathless chuckle, shaking her head. "After five years, you suddenly need to see me? Why? Because you found out something new about the past? Or is it just your ego that can't handle the fact that I don't care anymore?"
His jaw tightened. "Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Pretend," he said, stepping closer. "Pretend that none of this matters to you."
Divya lifted her chin defiantly. "It doesn't."
His eyes darkened, searching her face. "You're lying."
"I'm not."
"Then why are your hands shaking?"
Divya froze. She looked down at her hands, only to realise-he was right. Her fingers were trembling against the door frame, barely noticeable, but he had seen through her just like he always did.
Anger flared in her chest. She clenched her fists. "I'm not the same girl who used to run after you, purv. You lost that version of me when you walked away without a damn word. The only mistake I made back then was loving you more than I loved myself."
Purv flinched. The sharpness in her voice was like a dagger, cutting through him deeper than he expected. He had imagined this moment so many times-her anger, her defiance-but nothing prepared him for the reality of facing the consequences of his own actions.
"You think I didn't feel anything when I left?" His voice was low, but there was an edge to it now. "You think it was easy for me?"
"You chose to leave, purv!" She snapped. "I didn't have that choice. I had to stay back and pick up the pieces of myself while you-" she stopped, swallowing hard, willing herself not to break.
He stepped even closer. "You think I didn't care?"
"No. I think you didn't care enough."
Silence. Heavy. Suffocating.
Their breaths mingled in the small space between them.
Purv looked down at her, his gaze dark with something unreadable. "And what if I told you I regret it?"
Divya's heart stopped for a second.
But she refused to let his words affect her. Not again.
She let out a slow breath, then whispered, "regret doesn't change the past, purv."
With that, she took a step back and closed the door in his face.
Leaving purv standing in the cold, alone-with nothing but his own regrets.
