Roman's pov
A rogue launched itself onto the hood, growling as its claws scraped across the windshield.
The rogue snarled viciously, it's lips peeled back, revealing it's gleaming, sharp, canines.
I heard Aurora gasp in my arms. Her eyes widening in horror as she took in the scene infront of her.
"Roman?" she whispered, looking up at me with big fearful eyes.
"It's going to be okay," I assured her. "Don't be afraid, I'm here I won't let them touch you."
The windshield began to slowly crack as another rogue rammed into the rear of the vehicle.
"Damn it!" Rynn shouted.
"Get us out of here, Rynn!" I growled. "Run them down if you have too!"
Rynn didn't have to say anything. He slammed on the accelerator and struck the rogues that were blocking our way.
I instinctively tightened my grip around Aurora's waist and pulled her to my chest.
Everything happened at once. The SUV plunged down a steep embankment and rolled three times
Before slamming into the trunk of a massive oak tree.
For one terrifying heartbeat no one moved.
Pain shot through my shoulder as I pushed myself upright. I could feel blood trickling from a cut above my eyebrow.
My attention immediately snapped to Aurora.
Thank moon goddess she was still conscious but she was also bleeding and looked to be in a lot of pain.
"Roman," she whispered.
"Let's get out of here," I murmured.
"Rynn? Thorne?" I called.
"We're good," Rynn groaned from the front.
I planted my boot against the twisted door and with one powerful kick the metal gave way.
Cold air rushed inside as I climbed out first before carefully lifting Aurora into my arms.
Rynn and Thorne climbed out moments later. They looked fine except for a few scrapes and bruises.
The SUV was beyond repair. Its front end had been crushed against the tree while smoke continued pouring from the engine.
I carefully placed Aurora against the tree and kneeled infront of her, cupping her face.
"Where are you hurt?"
"Just my arm..." she whispered, wincing.
I glanced down at her arm. It had a deep gash and was bleeding profusely.
I removed my shirt and ripped it apart. I then wrapped it around her arm to stop the bleeding.
Relief washed over me. Thank moon goddess she wasn't seriously injured or God knows what I would've done if anything had to happen to her out here in the middle of nowhere.
"We need to get out of here," Rynn said as he scanned the tree line.
He was right. We needed to move fast.
Just as I was about to lift Aurora into my arms a low growl rumbled in the air.
I turned around and saw five rogues
Slowly approaching us, growling and snarling.
Aurora instinctively gripped the front of my shirt.
"Roman I'm scared," she murmured, shaking like a leaf.
My beast surged forward with a thunderous roar inside my mind to protect our mate.
I stared down at her, my gaze softening as I lifted her chin.
"Everything's going to be okay, I just need you to stay put whilst I deal with these monsters, okay?"
She nodded as tears rolled down her cheeks.
My chest tightened. Goddess, she was fucking trembling. I could smell her fear. She didn't have to fear these fucking savages. I was here to protect her. I would die before I let anything happen to her.
I slightly leaned down and brushed my lips against her temple. "I love you," I whispered.
"I-I love you too," she stammered.
I rose to my full height, glancing at Rynn and Thorne.
"No matter what happens, protect her."
They nodded.
"I won't let anything happen to her," Rynn said as he moved infront of her.
My transformation hit like a lightning
Strike, one moment human, the next a towering beast of muscle and fur.
I threw my head back and unleashed a thunderous roar that shook the trees.
The rogues answered with snarls as they charged toward me.
I met the first rogue head-on, driving it into the ground with enough force to crack the earth beneath us. My claws tore through its chest before I tossed the lifeless body aside.
Another lunged.
I caught it by the throat and hurled it against a tree causing the trunk to splinter on impact.
Behind me, Rynn and Thorne fought with equal ferocity, they were surrounding Aurora as they fought.
Suddenly more rogues emerged from the tress.
I tore through another rogue, then another and another. The place looked like a damn war zone. The ground was bloody, littered with the bodies of the rogues, their heads ripped off.
"Roman!" Aurora's voice sliced through the air.
When I turned around my beast let out a furious howl.
A Rogue war circling my mate whilst Rynn and Thorne was busy fighting off three rogues.
Rage boiled up like acid, burning it's way through my throat. I didn't waste another second, I leaped into the air and pounced on the rogue, snapping it's jaws.
A sudden pain exploded across my back. One of the rogues dug its claws into my shoulders.
The pain was excruciating.
Another rogue buried its teeth into my back, ripping away a chunk of flesh.
A roar of pain escaped me.
Before I could shake it loose, another rogue lunged low.
Its jaws clamped around my leg, Its fangs sank deep into muscle.
I staggered.
For a split second I was trapped but then suddenly a blur of gray crashed into them. Rynn, he flung the rogue that was on my back and clawed at the one that had its jaw clamped around my leg.
I steadied myself, blood dripping from my wounds.
Rynn stood beside me, breathing heavily.
Alpha, you okay? He asked through the mindlink.
I'm fine, I replied.
You're not. I think you should leave with the Luna. Thorne and I will handle the rogues.
No, I can't just leave you two out here.
I insist you go, we can take them on.
No, I can't, I refused to let them fight the rogues off by themselves. It's not that I don't trust them in fending them off. I do but I'm not a coward to just leave.
Alpha, have you had a look at her?
I glanced at Aurora and froze. She looked as though she might collapse at any second.
She needs you more than we do.
I clenched my fists. Every instinct screamed at me to stay and fight beside my warriors but my mate she came first.
I looked back at Rynn.
Are you sure?
We'll be fine alpha.
Without another word, I shifted back into my human form, rushed to Aurora's side, and carefully scooped her into my arms.
She stirred weakly, her forehead resting against my chest.
"I'm here little one."
Behind us, another deafening roar echoed through the woods as Rynn and Thorne charged back into the battle.
I cast one final glance over my shoulder before cradling Aurora securely against me, and sprinted deeper into the forest, every heartbeat driven by one purpose alone: Get my mate to safety.
