When No Became Yes

Morning didn't rush into the Oberoi house.

But inside Meera... there was nothing calm about this morning.

Her thoughts about Aarav's care, his distance, the unspoken storm between them.

His words about love, about letting go, about strength... they kept replaying in her mind like a wound she couldn't stop touching.

The kitchen was already alive.Oil crackled loudly in the pan.Utensils clashed against marble counters.

Voices overlapped maids calling for ingredients, someone shouting about tea, someone else asking about breakfast trays.

Amidst all that noise..

Meera stood quietly near the stove.

She poured pancake batter onto the hot pan with careful hands.

The soft spreading sound filled the air.

She flipped one.Golden.Perfect.

Placed it aside.Poured another.

Her hands worked with precision.

But her mind... wasn't there.

It was stuck between Aarav's sudden want to know about life ...

"Meera, watch it... you're about to burn that one," an older maid warned casually from behind.

Her tone wasn't harsh. But Meera still flinched.

"Oh... yes. Sorry i didn't notice it." she murmured softly, forcing herself back into the moment.

She flipped the pancake again.

Perfect.Just as she reached for the batter again.

Her phone vibrated. She ignored it first. It vibrated again. And again.

This time the sound felt louder. Her heart slowly began to pound.

Unknown number. Her fingers froze mid air.Don't pick it up.

Her mind whispered urgently. But the phone kept ringing.

As if whoever was calling knew she wouldn't ignore it forever.

She wiped her hands quickly on her apron and stepped away from the stove.

She moved toward a corner of the kitchen where no one would overhear her.

Her thumb hovered over the screen. Then she pressed accept.

"...Hello?" she asked cautiously, her voice low but steady.

Then

"Hello, Meera."A deep voice.

Her entire body stiffened instantly.

Her brows pulled together.

"Who is this?" she asked sharply.

A soft chuckle came from the other side.

"You forgot me already?" he said slowly, amusement dripping from his tone.

Her jaw tightened.

"I don't entertain strangers," she replied coldly.

"I'm busy. Say what you want or I'm disconnecting." she said.

Another pause followed.

Then

"You really don't recognize my voice?"Her stomach dropped.

"It's Omkar." He finally said it.

Her breath caught."...Omkar Thakur. Now remember?"

Everything inside her went still.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Her voice came out low and tense."How did you get my number?"

On the other side, Omkar leaned back on the sofa comfortably, clearly enjoying this.

"It's Omkar Thakur, meera. If I want something... I get it." he replied lazily.

His voice held effortless arrogance."And it's just a number."

Her jaw clenched harder.

"What do you want from me now? After everything you've already done... humiliates me... insulting me... making my life miserable... what else is left? " Her voice trembled not from weakness. From anger.

Then

"You." he said while smirking.

Her grip loosened.

"What?Are you insane?" she whispered.

she snapped immediately after, anger rushing in."What could I possibly give you?"

His smirk deepened."You can give a lot more than you think."

Her temper snapped.

"Stop this nonsense!" she shouted back.

"I'm not some rich heiress. I don't own property, I don't have influence, I don't have power. I'm just trying to survive!" she said.

His voice softened.

"You still don't understand. I want you." he murmured.

Her breath hitched.Rage replaced confusion.

"GO TO HELL !I would rather die than sle..." she burst out.

Omkar cut in calmly.

"Why do you jump to conclusions?Did I say I want you in my bed?" he asked almost lazily.

"Did I say I want your body?" he said.

She faltered slightly.Confusion flickered.

"Then what do you want?" she demanded.

His tone turned colder.

Sharpened.

"Do you really think your cheap, middle class body is something I'd desire?" he said with a quiet scoff.

Each word struck like a slap.

"You don't have class. You don't have status. You don't even belong in the same world as people like me."he said.

Her eyes burned.

"If you called just to insult me then I will.."

"I called because I need you, now" he interrupted.

Her voice hardened."For what?"

A pause.Then..

"i can't tell you now . Just come to my house."

She blinked. Then let out a bitter laugh.

"You must be joking." She said

What makes you think I'd step into your house again? Planning another public humiliation?" she asked him.

Omkar's voice dropped."If I wanted to humiliate you, Meera... I wouldn't need an invitation."

Silence stretched.

"You really think I'll come?" she challenged.

"Yes." he said with confidence.

"I'm not the same girl you always bullied before .I'm not weak that way you think , mr Omkar." she said firmly.

"I like this new version. But I want to see how long it lasts." he admitted.

"I said no." she argued with him.

His voice hardened instantly. "If you don't come... I will cancel your scholarship."

Her breath stopped.

"And I'll make sure you're removed from your college permanently. You know I can do it." he said while smirking.

Her heartbeat roared in her ears.Panic crept in.

"Why are you doing this to me?What did I ever do to deserve this?" she whispered, her voice shaking despite her effort to stay strong.

"Then come . In three hours" he replied simply.

Her lips parted."And if I don't?"

A dangerous silence followed."Then you'll see how cruel I can actually be."

Her chest tightened.

"I'll send the location. And Don't test my patience." he added calmly.

The line went dead.

Meera stood frozen. Her breathing is uneven. Her mind racing.

First Aarav. And Now this Omkar.

Two different men.Same control.

Same pressure.

Her phone buzzed again.Location received. Her hands trembled.

She had to go.

But she knew one thing. She couldn't go alone. Then her name came into her mind.

Ruchika.Yes.She would take Ruchika with her.

But first...

She turned back toward the stove. She still had pancakes to finish. Her work.

Three Hours Later: ?????????

Meera sat inside the cab, her fingers tightly clutching the edge of her dupatta.Beside her, Ruchika kept glancing at her again and again.

Not because she didn't know what was happening. But because she did.

And she didn't like it.

"Meera... we can still turn back. Think before it's too late." Ruchika said quietly.

Her voice wasn't dramatic. It wasn't panicked.

Meera shook her head slowly.

"You want to walk into a man's house who is blackmailing you? Fine. Your choice. But don't drag me into it." Ruchika said.

Meera's eyes softened."I'm not dragging you."

"You literally are."Ruchika said.

Silence.

Then Meera spoke again."I don't want to go alone.Please."

"That's not my fault . " Ruchika said.

Meera's voice dropped."He's not safe.You know that."

Ruchika shut her eyes.

"I know. Which is exactly why I'm not going." Ruchika said.

"No. If I don't go... he'll destroy everything." she whispered.

Her eyes were fixed outside the window, but she wasn't really seeing anything.

Ruchika frowned.

"He's threatening your scholarship, not your life. And also.." she replied firmly.

Meera gave a hollow laugh.

"You don't know men like Omkar. They don't just stop at one thing." she murmured. Her voice trembled slightly.

Her voice trembled now."They don't stop at one thing."

Ruchika stared at her."What does that mean?"

Meera didn't answer.Ruchika grabbed her wrist.

"What. Does. That. Mean?" Ruchika said.

Meera pulled her hand back."It means this won't end unless I face him."

Ruchika laughed dryly."Or maybe it gets worse if you do."

The car moved through wide, rich neighborhoods.Tall gates. Security cabins. Silent roads.

The world of people like Omkar.

Finally

The cab slowed.Then stopped.

In front of a massive black iron gate.

Ruchika's eyes widened.

"Oh my God...it's like .." she breathed.

The mansion behind the gates looked less like a house...And more like a palace.

Tall glass walls. White stone. A fountain at the center of the driveway.

Power.

Meera swallowed hard. Her throat felt dry.

"Ready, Ruchi?" Meera asked softly.

Ruchika stared at it.

"No."Ruchika said.

Meera turned to her."No what?I'm not going without you, Ruchi."

"I said no.This place looks like the villain's house in a movie."She crossed her arms.

Meera almost smiled."I need you.Please."

Ruchika shook her head.

"You don't need me. You need to not go inside."

Meera leaned closer."I can't do this alone."

"Yes, you can."Ruchika argued with Meera.

"No, I can't." Meera fought back.

"Yes, you can.Ruchika, please." Meera said.

"No."

Meera grabbed her hand.

"If something happens.." meera said.

Ruchika's eyes widened and cut her off.

"Exactly! Something might happen!"

"And that's why I need you there." Meera said.

Ruchika stared at her and said,"You're emotionally blackmailing me now?"

Meera whispered,"I'm scared."

Ruchika looked away. And said,"You're unbelievable."

Meera didn't let go."Come with me."

Ruchika sighed heavily."If this turns into a horror movie, I'm blaming you."

Meera almost laughed.

The gates opened automatically.

They stepped out of the cab.The driver didn't even wait. He left instantly.

Ruchika moved closer to Meera.

Like she was silently saying .You're not alone.

They walked toward the entrance.

Before they could reach the door

It opened.

A uniformed staff member stood there.

"Ms. Meera?" he asked politely.

Meera stiffened.

"Yes..." Meera answered.

"Sir is expecting you." He said.

'Of course he was.'Meera thought. Ruchika stepped forward immediately.

"We're here together, sir!" she said firmly. The staff member nodded once.

"As instructed."he said.

That made Meera pause."As instructed?" she repeated.

The man stepped aside.

"Sir said you wouldn't come alone."

Meera and Ruchika exchanged a quick glance.

A strange unease passed between them.He knew she would bring someone.

That wasn't confidence.

They stepped inside. The mansion was silent.Too silent. No voices.

Ruchika leaned closer.

"This place gives serial killer vibes," she whispered.

Meera almost smiled. They were led into a large living area.

And there.He sat.Omkar.

Relaxed. One arm resting on the sofa.

Like a king in his court.

Waiting.Watching.A slow smile appeared on his lips as soon as he saw her.

"You finally came here ." he said.

Meera's jaw tightened.

"You left me no choice." Meera said with an angry voice. His eyes shifted to Ruchika.

"And you brought backup," he noted.

Ruchika crossed her arms."I'm not a backup.Omkar. I'm her friend. As a friend i need to protect her from people like you."

Omkar chuckled softly."I like her already. Both of you are like the same"

Meera didn't sit.Didn't move.

"Say what you want. I don't have time for you and it's special for your games "

Omkar leaned forward slightly.

"I told you.I need you Ms. Meera ." he said quietly.

Ruchika scoffed."For what?"

Omkar's gaze returned to Meera.

"For something only you can do. That now."

Meera frowned."And what is that?"

A pause.A long one.

Then.Omkar said slowly,

The words still hung in the air.

"I need you to pretend to be my fiancée."

Ruchika blinked in disbelief.

Meera just stared at him.

Then

A short, humourless laugh escaped her."You've officially lost your mind, mr Omkar Thakur!!!"

Her voice wasn't loud.Omkar didn't react.

He just watched her.Calm.Then he leaned back.

"Relax. I don't need a fake fiancee. Iam just joking." he said casually.

" Listen i don't have any time for your dirty games."meera said.

" But i did you for something." Omkar said calmly.

Meera frowned and asked,"Then what do you need?"

Then he said,"I need the mansion cleaned for tonight's party."

Ruchika's brows shot up."...What?"

Omkar continued smoothly,"There's an important gathering tonight. Guests. Business partners."

His gaze stayed on Meera.

"And I want this place to be spotless by you."he said.

Meera's expression hardened.

"You called me here... for cleaning?" she asked slowly.

"Yes."he answered.

The simplicity of his answer felt insulting. Her anger rose instantly.

"You think I came here to be your servant?" she snapped.

Omkar tilted his head to Ruchika.

"If you want, your friend can wait here .Because i think she can't help you." he said calmly.

Ruchika frowned."Excuse me?"

"I need you,Only you. for you" he clarified, looking at Meera.

Meera's hands curled into fists.

"No.I'm not doing this."Her voice was immediate.

Omkar watched her silently. His tone changed.

"Oh?You don't clean?"" he said softly.

His gaze sharpened."Strange.I heard you work as a maid at the Oberoi mansion."

Her breath hitched.Ruchika's eyes widened.

Omkar continued,"So what's the problem? You already do this."

Silence filled the room again.

"If you clean there. You can clean it here." he went on,

Meera's jaw tightened painfully. But she said,"This is different."

"How?" he asked calmly.

No answer came.Because she didn't have one.

Omkar leaned forward slightly.

"I'll pay you.And I'll pay your friend too."

Meera looked up sharply.Ruchika's eyes flickered.

Money.The word lingered.

Meera shook her head.

"No."She opened her mouth to refuse again. But Ruchika grabbed her wrist.

"Wait," she said quickly.

Then she turned to Omkar.

"Give us a minute."

Omkar nodded once."Take your time."

Ruchika pulled Meera toward a corner.

Far enough that he couldn't hear.

As soon as they stopped.

Meera whispered sharply,"What are you doing, Ruchi?!"

Ruchika lowered her voice."We need that money "

"I don't care."Meera said.

"We do.For exams. And also new books for our upcoming" Ruchika insisted.

That made Meera pause.

Ruchika continued,"You remember the fees? The books? The forms?"

Meera looked away. Her silence said everything.

"He's offering payment. And for both of us." Ruchika pressed.

"I don't want his money," Meera whispered.

"Pride doesn't pay exam fees,"Ruchika replied quietly.

Ruchika softened her tone.

"Listen... it's just work. And it's not like we are doing something cheap. We are just doing that work . And we will take our working money not free money."

Meera shook her head."It's not working. It's him."

Ruchika sighed."I know. But don't forget why we're struggling."

Meera's eyes dropped. Her mind replayed unpaid forms.

Pending payments.

She closed her eyes.A deep breath.

Then

"...Fine." Meera agreed.

Ruchika searched her face."You're sure?"

Meera nodded slowly."Let's just finish this and leave as soon as possible ."

They walked back.Omkar looked up immediately.

Ruchika spoke first."We'll do it."

Meera forced the words out."Yes."

Omkar's lips curved slightly."Good."

And somehow , That smile made everything feel like a mistake already.
