Chapter 17 Choosing Each Other #3
"And I chose him."
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
"I know."
The words were quiet.
But they were different.
Evan felt something inside him loosen.
Not completely.
Not enough to erase the pain.
But enough to breathe.
Richard looked at him again.
"I still don't like the age difference."
"I understand."
"I still don't like that he's my friend."
"I understand."
"I still don't know if I can look at him the same way."
Evan nodded.
"That's okay."
Richard looked surprised.
"Okay?"
"You're allowed to need time."
Richard's eyes softened.
"And you're still going to marry him."
"Yes."
Richard sighed.
"Of course you are."
Evan smiled faintly.
"I love him."
"I know."
"And he loves me."
Richard was silent.
Then he said, "I believe you."
Evan's heart stopped for a moment.
"You do?"
Richard nodded.
"I don't understand it."
"But?"
"But I believe you."
Evan looked down quickly because his eyes were filling.
Richard continued.
"I don't approve of everything."
"I know."
"I may never be completely comfortable with it."
"I know."
"But you're my son."
Evan looked up.
"And you're an adult."
The words were simple.
Yet they felt enormous.
Richard swallowed.
"I have to accept that your life is yours."
Evan wiped his eyes.
"Thank you."
"I'm not giving you permission."
"I know."
"I'm acknowledging reality."
Evan smiled through his tears.
"That's enough."
Richard leaned back.
"Are you happy?"
The question surprised Evan.
He nodded.
"Yes."
"Really?"
"Yes."
Richard looked at him for a long time.
"Then I don't want to be the reason you're miserable."
Evan's eyes filled again.
"You aren't."
"Not anymore?"
Evan shook his head.
"You're my father."
Richard nodded.
"And I love you."
"I love you too."
The silence that followed was different.
Still painful.
Still filled with everything they hadn't resolved.
But it wasn't hostile.
Richard looked toward the family photographs.
"When is the wedding?"
Evan smiled.
"Saturday."
Richard nodded.
"Where?"
Evan told him.
Richard listened.
Then he looked at Evan.
"I'll come."
Evan stared at him.
"You will?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
Richard sighed.
"No."
Evan laughed softly through his tears.
Richard almost smiled.
"But I'll be there."
Evan stood.
For a moment, he wasn't sure whether he should hug his father.
Then Richard stood too.
He opened his arms.
Evan stepped forward.
The embrace was awkward at first.
Then it became familiar.
Evan closed his eyes.
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not completely.
It wasn't approval.
Not yet.
It wasn't a perfect reconciliation.
But it was something.
When they separated, Richard looked at him.
"I still have questions."
"You can ask them."
"Later."
"Okay."
Richard nodded.
"And Evan?"
"Yes?"
"Don't let him make decisions for you."
Evan smiled.
"He won't."
"And don't let anyone else do it either."
Evan understood what his father was really saying.
"Okay."
Richard looked at him.
"Be happy."
Evan's throat tightened.
"I'll try."
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"Don't just try."
He paused.
"Choose it."
Evan smiled.
"I will."
He left the house with tears in his eyes.
The conflict wasn't gone.
His father's fears hadn't magically disappeared.
The age difference remained.
The history remained.
The complicated emotions remained.
But something had shifted.
Richard had finally acknowledged that Evan was an adult capable of choosing his own partner.
And Evan had finally understood that reconciliation didn't require either of them to pretend the past hadn't hurt.
They could disagree.
They could still have difficult conversations.
They could still need time.
But they didn't have to remain enemies.
When Evan returned home, Nathaniel was waiting.
He stood the moment Evan entered.
"How did it go?"
Evan smiled through the last of his tears.
"He'll come."
Nathaniel stared at him.
"Your father?"
Evan nodded.
"He's coming to the wedding."
Nathaniel exhaled slowly.
"How do you feel?"
Evan walked into his arms.
"Relieved."
Nathaniel held him.
"Did he forgive us?"
Evan shook his head.
"Not completely."
Nathaniel nodded.
"That's okay."
Evan rested his head against his chest.
"He said he believes me."
Nathaniel kissed his hair.
"That's a beginning."
Evan smiled.
"Yes."
He looked down at his ring.
Then up at Nathaniel.
"It's enough for now."
Nathaniel held him closer.
And Evan realized something important.
Some wounds didn't close because someone suddenly said everything was fine.
They healed because people stopped demanding that pain disappear before they were willing to move forward.
His father hadn't accepted everything.
Nathaniel hadn't erased the past.
Evan hadn't forgotten the hurt.
But they had all taken one step.
And sometimes one step was enough to begin again.
Evan looked at Nathaniel.
"I'm going to marry you."
Nathaniel smiled.
"I know."
"My father is going to be there."
"I know."
Evan rested his hand over his stomach.
"And our baby will be there too."
Nathaniel covered Evan's hand with his own.
"Our family."
Evan smiled.
Their family.
Not perfect.
Not simple.
But chosen.
And finally, accepted enough to begin.
