Chapter 18 The Wedding #2
The public photograph.
Richard's anger.
Evan leaving.
The search.
The proposal.
The wedding plans.
Every difficult moment had led them here.
But Nathaniel didn't believe those difficulties had created their marriage.
They had tested it.
The choice had always been theirs.
The officiant looked at Nathaniel.
"Do you take Evan as your husband?"
Nathaniel looked into Evan's eyes.
"I do."
The words came easily.
There was no hesitation.
No calculation.
No fear.
He had spent months trying to calculate the consequences of loving Evan.
Today, he stopped.
He simply loved him.
The officiant turned toward Evan.
Nathaniel watched Evan answer.
"I do."
Nathaniel smiled.
His husband.
The word moved through him.
Husband.
It was strange how a single word could carry so much.
Evan was not simply the man he had fallen in love with.
He was the person Nathaniel had chosen to build his future beside.
His partner.
His equal.
His family.
The officiant nodded.
"Then you may exchange your vows."
Nathaniel took a breath.
He had written his vows himself.
He had rewritten them several times.
Every version had seemed too formal.
Too polished.
Too much like a business agreement.
Finally, he had stopped trying to make them perfect.
He simply wrote what was true.
He looked at Evan.
"I promise to respect you."
Evan's eyes softened.
"I promise to respect the life you had before me, the life you have now, and the life you want to build."
Nathaniel's voice remained steady.
"I will never confuse loving you with owning you."
Evan swallowed.
"I will never use my age, my position, my money, or my experience to take choices away from you."
Nathaniel squeezed his hand.
"If you disagree with me, I will listen."
A few guests smiled.
Evan laughed quietly through his tears.
"If you challenge me, I will remember that you are not my responsibility."
Nathaniel paused.
"You are my partner."
Evan's eyes filled.
"And when life becomes difficult, I promise not to run simply because the easier choice is to walk away."
Nathaniel took a breath.
"I will stand beside you."
He looked down briefly at Evan's pregnancy bump.
"I will stand beside you as we become parents."
Then he looked back into Evan's eyes.
"But I will also stand beside you as the man I love."
Evan's lips trembled.
"Because before there was a baby, there was you."
Nathaniel's voice softened.
"And after our child grows up and leaves home, there will still be you."
Evan closed his eyes for a second.
Nathaniel continued.
"I promise to keep choosing you."
The words were simple.
But they carried everything.
"I promise to love you when we agree and when we don't."
A small laugh moved through the guests.
"I promise to make room for your dreams."
He smiled.
"Even when they involve changing my perfectly organized plans."
Evan laughed.
"I promise to come home."
Nathaniel's voice became quieter.
"To you."
He swallowed.
"And I promise that no matter how many years pass, no matter how much our lives change, I will never forget the man standing in front of me today."
Evan was crying openly now.
Nathaniel reached for his hand.
"You are the man I love."
He paused.
"You are my family."
Another breath.
"And you are my home."
Evan squeezed his fingers.
Nathaniel finished.
"I choose you."
The garden was silent for a moment.
Then Evan whispered, "I love you."
Nathaniel smiled.
"I love you too."
The rings came next.
Nathaniel took Evan's hand.
The ring he had chosen looked simple against Evan's skin.
He remembered the first time he had placed a ring on that finger when he proposed.
That had been a promise.
Today was something deeper.
A commitment made in front of the people they loved.
Nathaniel slid the ring into place.
Then Evan took Nathaniel's hand.
Nathaniel watched as Evan carefully placed his ring.
For a second, Nathaniel couldn't breathe.
It was done.
They were married.
The officiant smiled.
"I now pronounce you husbands."
The word struck Nathaniel harder than he expected.
Husbands.
Plural.
Together.
Evan looked at him.
Nathaniel smiled.
"Hello, husband."
Evan laughed through his tears.
"Hello."
Nathaniel leaned closer.
"May I kiss you?"
Evan smiled.
"You don't have to ask anymore."
Nathaniel kissed him.
The kiss was warm and gentle.
It wasn't for the guests.
It wasn't for photographs.
It wasn't for anyone watching.
It was for them.
When they separated, Evan rested his forehead against Nathaniel's.
"My husband."
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
There it was.
The first time.
Evan had said it.
My husband.
Nathaniel felt something inside him break open.
Not painfully.
Beautifully.
He smiled.
"My husband."
Evan laughed softly.
"You like that."
"I love it."
"Good."
Nathaniel placed one hand carefully against Evan's back.
His other hand rested over the pregnancy bump.
Their baby moved beneath his palm.
Nathaniel smiled.
"Did you feel that?"
Evan nodded.
"I think our baby approves."
Nathaniel laughed.
"Then we have official approval."
Evan leaned against him.
Around them, people were standing.
Clapping.
Smiling.
Some crying.
Nathaniel saw Richard.
For a second, their eyes met.
Richard gave him a small nod.
It wasn't a complete reconciliation.
Nathaniel knew that.
But it was something.
He nodded back.
Then he turned his attention to Evan.
Nothing else mattered.
They began walking away from the ceremony together.
Nathaniel held Evan's hand.
Their wedding guests followed.
The flowers moved gently in the breeze.
The afternoon light fell across the garden.
And Nathaniel thought about the strange nickname that had followed them from the beginning.
My wife.
He had first thought it accidentally.
Then privately.
Then playfully.
Eventually, the word had become part of the language only they understood.
He looked at Evan.
The man beside him was now his husband.
And yet the old name still felt right.
Not because Nathaniel wanted Evan to become someone else.
Not because he saw him as less of a man.
It meant something deeper.
Home.
The person who made the house feel alive.
The person who cared for him.
The person he cared for.
The person whose presence made ordinary days matter.
The person whose absence made the rooms feel empty.
The person he wanted beside him when the day began and when it ended.
His partner.
His family.
His home.
His wife.
Nathaniel smiled privately.
Evan noticed.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You're smiling."
"I know."
"Why?"
Nathaniel leaned closer.
"My wife."
Evan rolled his eyes.
"You're impossible."
"And you're my husband."
Evan smiled.
"Both can be true."
Nathaniel kissed his temple.
They reached the end of the garden.
Their car waited nearby.
Nathaniel opened the door for Evan.
Evan looked back at the ceremony space.
The flowers.
The chairs.
Their guests.
His father.
Then he looked at Nathaniel.
"Ready?"
Nathaniel smiled.
"Always."
Evan stepped into the car.
Nathaniel followed.
As they drove away, Evan rested his head against Nathaniel's shoulder.
Nathaniel looked down at their joined hands.
Two rings.
Two promises.
One future.
Their baby would arrive soon.
There would be sleepless nights.
Diapers.
First steps.
Arguments about parenting.
Laughter.
Fear.
Joy.
A thousand ordinary moments they couldn't predict.
But Nathaniel wasn't afraid of the uncertainty anymore.
He had learned that the future didn't need to be controlled to be worth choosing.
Sometimes it simply needed to be shared.
He looked at Evan.
"My husband."
Evan smiled without opening his eyes.
"My husband."
Nathaniel laughed softly.
Then, so quietly that only he could hear it, he added the old name.
"My wife."
The words carried years now.
The first accidental thought.
The domestic jokes.
The quiet mornings.
The pregnancy.
The arguments.
The fear.
The proposal.
The wedding.
Everything.
Evan opened his eyes.
"What did you say?"
Nathaniel smiled.
"Nothing."
Evan narrowed his eyes.
"I heard you."
Nathaniel kissed his forehead.
"You'll have to live with it."
Evan laughed.
"Fine."
He placed Nathaniel's hand over his stomach.
Their baby moved beneath it.
Nathaniel smiled.
The road stretched ahead.
Their wedding was behind them.
Their child would soon arrive.
Their life together was just beginning.
And for the first time, Nathaniel didn't think about what the world expected from him.
He thought about what he wanted.
Evan.
Their baby.
Their home.
Their future.
His husband.
His wife.
His family.
He held Evan's hand tighter.
They drove forward together, married at last, with the next chapter of their lives waiting just ahead.
