Chapter 9 Building a Future
Those words changed everything for them.
Not in a dramatic, whirlwind way.
It wasn’t overnight.
But quiet and steady.
Like sunlight creeping through a window after a long storm.
"I love you."
Three simple words.
After they were spoken, Tessa and Jamison no longer had to wonder where they stood.
They knew.
And somehow that certainty made everything sweeter.
Their phone calls.
Their dates.
Their laughter.
Even their quiet moments.
All of them felt deeper now.
More intentional.
Much more real.
Both of them stopped thinking about surviving and started thinking about the future.
Three weeks after their declarations of love, Tessa arrived home after an exhausting shift.
The emergency department had been chaotic.
Two trauma cases. Gun shot wound to the chest.
Which was a very difficult surgery but the patient survived.
One frightened child who had refused to let go of her hand while their mother was treated for a very severe asthma attack.
By the time she made it to her apartment, her feet hurt and her shoulders ached.
She kicked off her shoes and headed for the kitchen.
Then froze.
A bouquet of sunflowers sat on her counter.
Beside them was a note.
Tessa smiled immediately.
She already knew who it was from.
Opening the card, she read:
"For the woman who spends weeks taking care of everyone except herself.”
Eat. Rest. Hydrate.
And remember that someone loves you very much.
— Jamison"
Beneath the note sat her favorite takeout from a nearby restaurant.
Along with a slice of cheesecake.
Tessa laughed.
Then cried.
Then laughed again.
Because nobody had ever taken care of her quite the way Jamison did.
Not with grand gestures.
With thoughtful ones.
The kind that said:
I see you.
I notice you.
You matter to me.
Meanwhile, Jamison was facing a problem.
One he never anticipated.
His family.
Specifically his mother.
His phone rang while he sat in his office.
"Mom."
"Jamison."
Immediately he knew something was coming.
His mother only used that tone when she had questions.
And usually lots of them.
"I hear you're seeing someone."
Jamison sighed.
Lauren.
Definitely Lauren.
"I am dating someone."
"Seriously dating?"
His mother sounded shocked.
That alone made him smile.
"Yes."
A long silence followed.
Then:
"When do I get to meet her?"
Jamison laughed.
There it was.
The real reason for the phone call.
"We're not there yet."
"You love her?"
The question surprised him.
Because the answer came instantly.
Without hesitation.
"Yes I do."
His mother's sharp intake of breath made him grin.
"Oh my goodness."
"What?"
"You really do."
Jamison leaned back in his chair.
Finally, talking about love didn't make him uncomfortable.
It made him happy.
"I really do mother."
His mother's voice softened.
"Then I can't wait to meet her."
A few days later, Tessa received a surprise invitation.
Dinner.
At Jamison's penthouse.
With his family.
She stared at the text message for nearly five minutes.
Then called him immediately.
"You invited me to meet your family?"
Jamison laughed.
"I did."
"Telling me after the fact seems important."
"You said yes before reading the details."
Tessa groaned.
"Jamison."
"What?"
"I'm nervous."
His voice immediately softened.
"Why?"
"Because."
"Tessa."
She sighed.
"What if they don't like me?"
Several seconds passed.
Then Jamison said something that made her heart melt.
"That's impossible because I love you."
Her chest tightened.
"You can't know that."
"But I do sweetheart."
The confidence in his voice was unwavering.
Because he truly believed it.
And somehow that helped.
A little.
The night of the dinner finally arrived.
Tessa spent nearly two hours getting ready.
Then another thirty minutes questioning every clothing choice she'd made.
By the time she arrived at Jamison's penthouse, her stomach was in knots.
The elevator ride felt endless.
When the doors finally opened, Jamison was waiting.
The moment he saw her, his entire face lit up.
And just like that, half her anxiety disappeared.
"You look beautiful."
Tessa smiled.
"You always say that."
"Because it's always true."
He kissed her forehead.
Then took her hand.
Ready or not.
It was time.
The evening surprised her.
Completely.
Because instead of cold, intimidating millionaires...
She found warmth.
Laughter.
Love.
His mother hugged her immediately.
His sister Jasmine adored her.
His younger cousins monopolized conversations.
By the end of dinner, everyone was laughing.
Especially Jamison.
Watching him with his family revealed something important.
The man she loved wasn't actually distant.
Or cold.
Or detached.
He was cautious.
There was a difference.
And slowly, he was learning to let people in again.
Later that evening, after everyone left, Tessa stood beside the massive penthouse windows.
Atlanta sparkled below.
Beautiful.
Endless.
Alive.
Jamison wrapped his arms around her from behind.
Resting his chin on her shoulder.
"You survived my crazy family."
Tessa laughed.
"Barely."
"My mother loves you."
"Your mother interrogated me."
"Same thing."
She laughed harder.
Jamison smiled against her hair.
Then grew thoughtful.
"Tessa?"
"Yeah?"
His arms tightened slightly.
"I've been thinking."
Dangerous words.
She smiled.
"About?"
"Our future."
Her heart skipped.
Neither of them spoke for a moment.
Because suddenly this conversation felt important.
Big.
Life-changing.
Jamison turned her gently until she faced him.
His blue eyes searched hers.
Seriously.
Honest.
Vulnerable.
The way they always became when discussing something that truly mattered.
"I know we're still building."
She nodded.
"Okay."
"But I also know I've never felt this way before."
Emotion tightened her throat.
Because she felt the same.
Completely.
"I don't want to rush you."
His thumb brushed her cheek softly.
"I just want you to know that when I think about the future..."
He smiled.
"I see you in it."
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
Not because she was sad.
She was overwhelmed by the depth of his love.
The sincerity of it.
The certainty.
"I see you too."
His smile widened.
Then he kissed her.
Soft.
Sweet.
Full of promise.
The following months became some of the happiest of their lives.
They traveled together.
Nothing extravagant.
Weekend trips.
Road trips.
Bookstores in small towns.
Coffee shops.
Museums.
Simple moments.
Beautiful moments.
The kind that became cherished memories.
And with every passing day, they fell deeper in love.
One Sunday afternoon, nearly a year after Jamison's attack, Tessa found herself sitting on a familiar bench in Piedmont Park.
The same bench where she'd once shared some of her deepest insecurities.
The same bench where healing truly began.
The weather was perfect.
The lake sparkled nearby.
Families filled the park.
Everything felt peaceful.
Jamison sat beside her unusually quiet.
Which immediately made her suspicious.
"Tessa."
She looked over.
His voice sounded nervous.
Very nervous.
In fact, it sounded exactly like it had before he'd told her he loved her.
Her heart began pounding.
"Yeah?"
Jamison swallowed.
Then smiled.
And suddenly Tessa knew.
She saw the look in his eyes.
That same look she'd seen the first time he truly opened his heart to her.
The same look she'd seen the night he told her that he loved her.
The same look she'd seen every day since.
Love.
Pure.
Deep.
Unshakable love.
And before he had even reached into his pocket...
Before he even stood...
Before he even asked...
Tears filled her eyes.
Somehow she already knew.
The next chapter of their story was about to begin.
