CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
NORA
Week One
Stockholm gives me blue mornings and no time to grieve properly.
Ingrid meets me in the hotel lobby at six with coffee and a schedule that assumes sleep is a character flaw. Adrian arrives wearing the same wrinkled coat he owned in college.
"International sophistication," he says when I stare at it.
Our first subject is a women's club practicing in a converted warehouse outside the city. The rink has low ceilings, terrible light, and players who distrust another foreign feature about sacrifice.
I understand their suspicion.
For the first hour, I photograph nothing.
I help carry nets. I ask names. I watch who sharpens blades, who tapes wrists, who laughs only after scoring. When I finally lift the camera, they have stopped performing resilience for me.
A defensewoman named Liv blocks a shot and rises with blood on her lip. She grins at a teammate while the coach checks her teeth.
The frame is perfect.
Not because of blood.
Because her teammate's hand is hidden behind Liv's back, gripping her jersey to keep her steady.
Unseen work.
At lunch, Ingrid reviews the image and says, "This is why you are here."
The praise enters a part of me that has been hungry so long it forgot hunger had a name.
That evening, Rhett's playoff game begins at one in the morning local time.
I tell myself I will sleep.
At twelve fifty-eight, I open the stream.
The Breakers advance in overtime. Rhett does not score. He wins the faceoff that creates the goal, then points the cameras toward the rookie who finishes it.
In the interview, no one asks about me.
I am grateful.
I am absurdly hurt.
At three, my phone lights.
RHETT: You should be asleep.
NORA: You should be celebrating.
RHETT: Medical staff says sleep is celebration.
NORA: You looked good.
Three dots appear.
RHETT: On the ice?
NORA: Do not become ambitious.
RHETT: Understood. How was the first shoot?
I send the image of Liv and the hidden hand.
He takes several minutes to answer.
RHETT: The hand makes it.
I smile in the dark.
NORA: Ingrid said the same thing.
RHETT: Ingrid is clearly qualified.
NORA: Good night.
RHETT: Good morning.
Before sleeping, I place his airport note beside the bed.
I did not come here to test whether Rhett would miss me correctly.
I came to work.
Still, somewhere across an ocean, he sees the same hidden hand I do.
Love survives distance easily.
Trust is the thing learning how.
